This '67 Corvair Monza 4 door (the last year for the 4 door model) was the "laboratory play toy" of a previous owner.  He made several changes/additions that make this car unique and desirable.

Options and refinements include:  side marker lights, all 4 tail lights converted to stop/turn signal lights, Front DISC Brakes with power assist on all four brakes, under dash courtesy lights, remote control driver's door mirror, 4.11 POSITRACTION differential, in dash Factory Air conditioning with a recent Sanden compressor and working factory idle "kick up" switch, tinted glass, a unique engine cold air induction system, the RY code, 4 carburetor 140 horsepower engine with dual exhaust, 2 speed Powerglide transmission, deluxe seat belts, Kenwood in dash AM/FM single cd player with rear package shelf mounted 6 X 9 speakers, and removable antenna, adjustable TELESCOPING steering wheel with the "Quick Steering" (3 3/4 turns lock to lock) set up, clock that shows the correct time twice per day, factory front floor mats, finned valve covers and extra capacity, finned oil pan, oil filter adaptor that uses the larger Ford-size oil filter, a never used trailer hitch, chrome exhaust grille inserts, chrome gas cap filler door guard.  I honestly have never seen another Monza Sport Sedan equipped like this one is!

The Marina blue paint is still smooth & shinny (age unknown with a few of the usual Corvair rust areas slowly surfacing--see pics), new Clark's Corvair driver's seat cushion foam padding, 4 recent carbs from Wolf Enterprises, Pertronix points elimination system, electric fuel pump with additional fuel filter, added "Fat Mat" style insulation under the fold down back seat/under rear window, upper door panels and dash board metal repainted, The factory headliner is intact, with a couple of small rips.  The interior is as clean and desirable as the pics here indicate!  The rear seat back cover would have to be changed to make it "Car Show" perfect; but is still useable as a "Daily Driver".  The hard-to-find 13 inch whitewall tires have perhaps 100 miles on them.

I've owned this car for about 2 years.  Because of multiple knee surgeries, limited recovery and constant pain I haven't been able to give this car the time and effort it needs to make it perfect.  I've been storing it in my Mother's garage; but since she recently purchased a new car she wants her garage back.

The starter needs to be repaired/replaced, as it spins quickly but does not engage the engine 90% of the time.  I just don't have the knee/body movement & flexability to take care of it.  Before the starter issue happened I was trying to start it and run it a couple times per month.  I've always kept gasoline additive/preservative in the tank.

Thanks to a recent pan gasket and "Rescue Tape" wrapped shift cable, the transmission is leak free.  The engine weeps from a couple of the push rod tubes (typical of Corvairs).  Only a small spot the size of a quarter; this car is NOT an "Exxon Valdez" leaker.  The steering gear box is tight, with no center free play.  The turn signal lever is also tight, with no slop and working properly.

The A/C needs a can or two of R-12 Freon to make it ice cold again.  I will include a couple of cans with the car for your use.

Legal Stuff: This 46 year old car is being sold as-is, no warranty expressed or implied. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer.  The full amount of selling price will be required to be paid to me before I can release the car to you or your shipper.

I've tried to be honest and fair in my description of this car.  If you have any questions, please email me.  I check my email several times per day.

Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

Tue, Feb 17 2015

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).

Race Recap: Rolex 24 at Daytona was fast and feisty

Mon, Jan 26 2015

Let the record show that victory at the 2015 Rolex 24 at Daytona went to the No. 02 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Target/Ford EcoBoost Riley DP driven by Verizon IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan and NASCAR drivers Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson. The winner did 740 laps to cover 2,634.3 miles in 24 hours and 57.667 seconds. That's a statement to this year's pace in spite of 18 cautions, two more than last year: the Michael Shank Racing Ligier got pole with a time of 1:39.194, slower than last year's pole time of 1:38.270; however, the winning car last year only did 695 laps. The fight for top honors was shaved to a four-car battle over the first third of the event. The No. 02 Ganassi car took the lead on the first lap, swapping it well into the night with the No. 01 Ganassi car, the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP, and the defending champion No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP, all of them staying within about 20 seconds of one another. The Action Express car had a fuel connector come loose and lost three laps getting towed back to the pits to have it reattached, but was back in the lead 18 hours in. The No. 01 Ganassi car dropped out with recurring clutch problems 22 hours in, retiring not long after. A race-within-the-race is where the concluding action happened, a seven minute, 30-second dash from the end of the last caution to the checkered flag. During the penultimate pit stops with an hour to go, Dixon was in second place followed Jordan Taylor in the Wayne Taylor Racing DP into the pits but beat him out, taking the lead. The Action Express car was in third. In the last pit stops of the race, Dixon gained even more time, getting a four-second advantage over Taylor. Then a full-course caution came out twenty minutes before the finish when a Prototype Challenge car hit the wall and caught fire, bunching up the field. That closed the pits, but the Wayne Taylor Racing car had to pit during that yellow because of a miscalculation of driver time. No driver can be behind the wheel for more than four hours in a six-hour period but Jordan Taylor was going to go over, so he came in to swap out for brother Ricky. That cost the team any chance of second place, since they took an additional drive-through penalty for entering closed pits. When the track went green again, Sebastien Bourdais in the Action Express car stayed all over Dixon for the final five laps but couldn't get around him.

Read This: Auto Extremist advocates for Corvette as brand with multiple models [w/poll]

Fri, 25 Jan 2013

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette really grinds Peter De Lorenzo's gears. Or, more accurately, the self-anointed Auto Extremist has an issue with what he sees as mismanagement of the legendary sports car by General Motors executives. In a new editorial on his website, De Lorenzo argues it's time to split Corvette off from Chevrolet to create an all-new brand, complete with a model range with at least three new takes on the sports car. Capable of fully leveraging the successes of the Corvette Racing program and brandishing the full might of GM's technical prowess, the Corvette brand would theoretically give Porsche something to sweat over.
Sure, that sounds like a party, but given GM's troubled track record when it comes to launching (let alone managing) brands, we say that's slippery slope that could just as easily end with the whole Corvette franchise in the scrap bin. Either way, the notion is certainly an interesting one. Head over to Auto Extremist to take in the full editorial, and then let us know what you think in Comments. Should GM split off its most storied nameplate?
