Offered for sale is our delightful 1963 California black plate Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier.  This highly original van was produced in small numbers from 1961 to 1965.  This particular example has benefited from low, long-term ownership and has always been a Southern California car, residing much of its life in the “Inland Empire” away from coast.  It’s a rust-free van that was restored to a very eye-pleasing driver-quality level, and it runs even better than it looks.

It’s simply a joy to drive and has plenty of power to spare.  It will pass a VW bus on a grade and you can wave a happy “Hawaiian Shaka” to the slow moving snail!  It elicits numerous thumbs-up as you cruise along and the vibrant hues of this nicely two-toned Crystal Turquoise & Cameo White grabs attention!  With all but the rear two windows able to be rolled down, the breezes billow throughout the cabin and the visibility is astounding!

On the day of the photo shoot, we stopped for a cup of coffee on the Coast Highway in Encinitas, the Greenbrier van became immediately swamped by admirers and the questions were flying!  Everyone is curious as to the origins of this cool looking coastal cruiser!  It truly is a Southern California beach icon.  In fact, the current issues of SURFER and SURFING magazine features a two-page ad for VON ZIPPER sunglasses with a patina-looking red Greenbrier featured and two very stoked young surfers wearing dark shades. In short, this van looks right at home by the coast.

With the drastically rising price values of the quintessential Volkswagen van, discerning buyers are looking at other affordably priced options.  Virtually the only other people-carrying van of this era that is rear-engine and air-cooled, it mimicked VW’s finer points but surpassed much of the obsolete design with somewhat radical (for the time) car engineering concepts.

The Corvair 95 platform is of “forward control” design, meaning the steering gear was mounted ahead of the front wheels.  A raised-deck floor is required to clear the engine.  The engine is Corvair’s air-cooled opposed six-cylinder was named “Turbo Air”.  It displaces 145 cubic inches and is fed by twin carburetors.  With four-wheel independent suspension and weight equally divided between front and rear means that the handling characteristics are superb, loaded or unloaded.  Folks, Ralph Nader was wrong---dead wrong.

This solid, well cared for 1963 needs a little TLC to get it 100%.  Just looking at the photos will verify the fine condition of this well-sorted van.  Yet, there are minor finishing touches one will want to perform.   Included in the sale is an era-correct Chevrolet radio, original front grill, and various small parts and an original owner’s manual and original workshop manual.  The new buyer will need to replace the door rubber and window felt, as several of the operable windows rattle and side-view mirrors will need to be sourced as well as the driver side sun visor.  Two of the door latches require a little encouragement to open.  All parts are available affordably on Ebay or may be purchased at Clarks Corvair Parts or other independent vendors.

Mechanically, the Chevy van starts right up on first try and purrs along while it drives.  The brakes are excellent, but as drum brakes one needs to know that it will not provide disc-brake efficiency.  Tires are brand new with the nubs still showing.  The restoration was all performed during the last two years so much of the car looks shiny and bright!  The new chrome glimmers in the California sunshine, the newly upholstered seats are comfy and the new carpeting adds a nice touch!  All of the correct and original emblems are on the car.  The original front windshield had a crack so it was replaced just two months ago at a cost of nearly $900 for an era-correct replacement with new rubber.  All of the mechanicals have been dealt with and improved, so rest assured this is a reliable, enjoyable driver!

If you desire a clean, original California black plate Corvair van, then look no further than this awesome 1963 Chevrolet Greenbrier!

Diesel Power finds the ultimate modified oil-burner

Sat, 24 Aug 2013

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.
What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.
You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"

The story of the 2014 Chevrolet SS: "Luxury, power, refinement, handling"

Thu, 07 Mar 2013

Not including the women and men who built it, the 2014 Chevrolet SS has only been seen in person by a piddling number of people - fewer humans than would fill the gymnasium at a high school volleyball game. Not including the men and women who built it, no one has driven it. Even so, it is already saddled with two controversies: the way it looks and the way it shifts.
First to that shifting. Did we love the last Americanized Holden, the awesomely sportsome Pontiac G8 GXP, and its six-speed manual? Of course. Do we wish the SS came with a six-speed manual? Of course. But we'd like a toboggan to come with a manual transmission. We'd put a manual transmission on a weasel if we could because we're just wired that way; if it moves, it should come with a stick and a clutch. Or at least the option.
Let's climb down off the ledge, though. We haven't driven the SS and we have no idea how good (or not) the automatic is. And the Hobson's Choice in transmissions when it comes to sport sedans like the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR-S and, oh yeah, cars-that-really-should-have-manuals like the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R and Porsche 918 and every single Lamborghini and Ferrari, for instance, hasn't stopped us from enjoying what is clearly the gruesome, dual-clutched demise of Western automotive civilization. Because in spite of our ululations at the dying of the six-speed light, we understand.
