Custom 2004 Chevrolet Colorado - Coloradical Blessed by GM, Built by a Fanatic Photography by Lance Martz Mini Truckin', April 01, 2005 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Cover Page Owner: Trent Van Arsdalen Ride: '04 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Hometown: Baltimo Trent Van Arsdalen has been working with custom vehicles for the past 16 years. In that time, he's run the gamut of all aspects of building and showing custom trucks and cars. His expertise, however, lies in his talents as an interior-design guru. Over the years, Trent has been responsible for showing vehicles in 14 states and has taken home many awards for his hard work and thoughtful interiors. Last year, Trent was the lucky recipient of an '04 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab, complete with the new Vortec 3500 3.5L inline I-5 engine. His goal was to turn the truck around in record time to debut it at the 2004 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Once the truck was delivered to Trent's Garage Ma-Hall (his massive 2,450 square-foot two-story facility) at Trent's Trick Upholstery in Baltimore, Ohio, the fun began. Using the extensive customer base of McCullough Public Relations, Trent was able to bring all kinds of big players in the automotive aftermarket on board with his project, which made getting the items he needed to make the truck's design become a reality happen faster than he ever imagined. With plenty of the needed products already in hand, Trent started reworking the truck in anticipation of the SEMA Show that was drawing closer by the day. With all the tools he needed to finish the truck, Trent began the insane two-month building spree that turned an otherwise stock Colorado into the showpiece that wound up winning two very prestigious awards at SEMA. To start, the door-handle areas were reworked to allow use of '00 Corvette handles. Once that modification was complete, the truck was handed over to Lynch Concepts for a total of 10 days, where the truck was transformed using the Keller Designs rendering Trent had supplied. Amazingly, the crew at Lynch Concepts really threw down and had the whole truck turned around faster than anyone could have believed. While the truck was at the body shop, Trent was busier than he'd ever been, reworking the door panels and building the center console. The console would be installed between a pair of Interior Supply & Services custom bucket seats that Trent had painstakingly upholstered to work flawlessly with all the other interior modifications. 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Dashboard The truck's suspension was then reworked at Cyrus's Suspension Shack using Air Ride Technologies' components, along with tubular upper control arms from Progressive Automotive. The truck was lowered more than 6 inches from stock in total, without any cutting of the chassis. The new suspension system is truly a bolt-on affair. When the truck came out of Cyrus's, it possessed a new attitude, due to its new altitude, and Trent was eager to move onto the next phase of the truck's development. What was next? Trent cut a gaping hole into the roof as the perfect opening for an Inalfa moonroof to be installed. With that accomplished, he moved on to complete the installation of the truck's new interior, while the truck's stereo system was installed and wired by Dave Planton using Scosche parts and electronic components from Kicker, Dual, Rosen Entertainment, Rostra Controls, and Subtomix. At this point, Trent had a truck on his hands with a completed interior that would make a street-rod owner green with envy, as well as a truck that matched the original rendering in colors. The things that he didn't have, though, were sending him over the edge, with only days to go before the truck was to be loaded onto a trailer and taken to Las Vegas. Ultimately, Trent ended up installing the truck's custom engine cover he'd built and loaded the truck for the trip without custom wheels or front brakes. He made a leap of faith in trusting the companies that had faithfully supported his project build would be there for him at the end of his journey. Luckily, four 20-inch Bonspeed wheels were sitting in Las Vegas when he arrived. He installed the rest of the Stainless Steel Brake Corporation braking components and bolted up the specially built new Bonspeed wheels only hours before driving the truck into the Las Vegas Convention Center to showcase his newest creation. When we asked Trent Van Arsdalen why he built the Coloradical in the first place, he said: "It was the hottest new truck to hit the truck market, and I wanted to be one of the first to build one. I bleed Chevy orange and have been driving them all my life. I've got about eight Chevrolet vehicles right now, and building the Coloradical is a sweet accomplishment I had never experienced to this degree until now." 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Artist Rendering 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Interior 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Wheel 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Side Mirror 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Engine Bay 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Front View 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Sponsors 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Exhaust Tips 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Bed The Lowdown Wheels/Tires 20x8.5-inch Bonspeed Laguna 6 Colorforged aluminum wheels / 245/35ZR20 Bridgestone Potenza S-03 tires Suspension/Chassis Progressive Automotive tubular upper control arms / Air Ride Technologies Shockwave air spring and shock assemblies up front / Air Ride Technologies four-link setup and air springs in the rear / Stainless Steel Brake Corporation's 14-inch CNC-machined slotted front rotors, 13-inch CNC-machined slotted rear rotors, three-piston Force-10 Tri-Power calipers / suspension installation by Cyrus's Suspension Shack in Chillicothe, Ohio 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Paint Body Modifications/Additions Shaved door handles replaced with Corvette handles / all-steel cowl-induction ram-air hood by Reflexxion / Street Scene front-bumper cover / Street Scene roll pan / Street Scene ground effects / Street Scene electric side mirrors / Inalfa model 840 moonroof / Trenz billet grille insert and one-off billet bumper insert / ARE tonneau cover Bodywork/Paint/Graphics Bodywork, paint, and graphics by Lynch Concepts in Chillicothe, Ohio / House of Kolor's Red Persimmon and Sunset Pearl paint / ghosted Chevy bow-tie emblems in the black stripe running front to back, separating the Persimmon and Sunset Pearl hues Interior Phipps Rod & Custom Accessories custom billet pedals / fabricated door panels by Trent's Trick Upholstery / Rostra Precision & Controls seat heaters and backup warning system / Trent's Trick Upholstery custom-fabricated center console / chamois and black Optima leather used throughout / Woodview Automotive Trim accents / custom bucket seats, beige square-weave carpeting, and Optima leather from Interior Supply & Services / Air Ride Technologies E-Ride controller mounted in forward center console / Faze gauges mounted in forward center console / all interior work by Trent's Trick Upholstery in Baltimore, Ohio 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Custom Audio System Stereo Dual stereo head unit (model XDY8125) / Scosche wiring throughout / Rosen Entertainment 10-inch flip-down monitor (with preloaded arcade games on board) in ARE tonneau cover and 7-inch in-dash monitor / Kicker amplifiers / Subtomix subwoofer enclosures / four 12-inch Kicker subwoofers (two in the cab and two in the bed) / two sets of component speakers installed in the cab / one set component speakers installed in the bed Engine/Performance Corsa SS stainless-steel after-cat exhaust system / Airaid air intake system / Airaid throttle-body spacer / |

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 concept suggests a diesel off-road future
Thu, Nov 20 2014"It takes the Colorado to a whole new place." – Mark Reuss The Chevrolet Colorado looks set to gain a more capable off-road version, with the company previewing a potential design direction with a ruggedized concept Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Called the Colorado ZR2, the concept brings back the name used on off-road-tuned S-10 and Blazer models in the 1990s and 2000s. The ZR2 has a track that's four inches wider than the Colorado Z71, which is currently the line's most capable off-roader. The ZR2 is fitted with a new grille, power-dome hood, custom wheel flares and off-road-style fascia that reduces overhang and has flip-out aluminum tow hooks. It's all slathered in an outdoorsy hue dubbed Cyprus Green. The are electronic locking front and rear differentials, skid plates and mono-tube coilover shock absorbers. It all rolls (or crawls) on 275/65R18 off-road tires wrapped around custom 18-inch aluminum wheels. There's also a spare tire assembly mounted in the bed, which has a spray-in liner and 48-inch lift jack should things go afoul on the trail. "It takes the Colorado to a whole new place," Mark Reuss, General Motors executive vice president of global product development, said at the reveal. Power comes from the 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine making 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This engine will arrive later in the year in the production Colorado. While the ZR2 remains only a concept, it suggests a new path for the Colorado – one we hope Chevy decides to take. Chevrolet Introduces Colorado ZR2 Concept Aggressively styled, more capable and driven by new 2.8L Duramax diesel engine LOS ANGELES – Chevrolet today introduced the Colorado ZR2 concept – a vision of how Chevrolet could take the all-new midsize truck's off-road capability to the next level. It also showcases the new 2.8L Duramax diesel engine that will arrive in the Colorado lineup later next year. The aggressively styled concept builds on the capabilities of the production Colorado Z71 and advances the legacy of Chevrolet's previous ZR2 production models. "From the bold stance to the trail-ready special equipment, the Colorado ZR2 is all about the fun of driving where the pavement ends – and doing it in characteristic Chevy style," said Tony Johnson, Colorado marketing manager.
Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon get updated tachometers due to graphical error
Sun, Feb 8 2015After James Bearing bought a Chevrolet Colorado, he noticed a discrepancy between the truck's spec sheet and the truck's tachometer: Chevrolet said 3.6-liter V6 in the little pickup produces 305 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, but the the tachometer indicates a redline at 6,500 rpm. So either he wasn't making as much power as he was promised, or the tachometer display was incorrect. Bearing said he asked Chevy about it but got no response. Until now. A General Motors spokesman said the rev limiter is indeed set for 6,800 rpm, but the tach graphics "are slightly off" in the Colorado and the GMC Canyon, and submitted an SAE horsepower certification to back him up. If you're wondering how such a thing got past quality control... well, let's just say you're not alone. GM is going to fix "the graphics on future trucks," which makes it sound like Bearing will just have to learn to live with the indicated redline he's got. He could always pretend he's driving a sleeper, with four more ponies waiting to be unlocked in the danger zone for those who dare. My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry
Wed, Dec 1 2021The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer. The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).
