History:

(Updated)

Harold Lee Bailey of Chino, California worked as a heavy equipment operator for the San Bernardino County Department of Public Works for thirty years.  He bought this code 62 Burnt Orange Chevelle SS LS5 454 brand new for his step mother Bertha May Bailey on February 26, 1971 at MK Smith Chevrolet in Chino, CA.

While trying to track down Mr. Bailey I learned that he had passed away on March 10, 2012.  Not ready to give up I decided to contact his immediate family members in hopes that someone would remember the car.  A few weeks later after several unsuccessful phone calls and numerous unreturned voicemails I was contacted by Harold’s sister Lorraine LaRue who after growing up in Chino, CA married and had moved to Colorado.  Harold’s sister said she didn’t quite remember the old orange Chevelle as Harold had several cars but she advised me that Harold’s long time good friend and Oaks Ave Chino, CA neighbor Larry Gonzalas may have information.  A couple phone calls later I was able to reach Mr. Gonzalas and to my amazement he not only remembered the Chevelle but had quite the story about its life.  Mr. Gonzalas told me that his friend Harold Bailey had purchased the car for his then 60 year old step mother to run errands around the San Bernardino Valley.  He said he remembered the car always being parked in the garage out of the California sun and that when Mr. Bailey’s step mother or “B” as she was known to family passed away at the age of 81 on July 28, 1982, Harold parked the Chevelle in his Oaks Ave garage, covered it and closed the door for the next 20 years.  The Chevelle SS 454 waited quietly in the darkness practically untouched until 2002 when Mr. Bailey pulled it out of the garage and listed it for sale.

On the back of Mr. Bailey’s original California Certificate of Ownership found in the glove box, on June 2, 2002 the Chevelle had been sold to a Mr. Charles “Chip” Gerst, a car collector and former 1986 NHRA Indy Super Gas National Champion who owned So Cal Collectibles in Costa Mesa CA.  (Incidentally in 2006 Charles “Chip” Gerst sold another Chevelle, the Ray Allen /Briggs 1970 NHRA Super Stock World Champion Chevrolet Chevelle LS6 Convertible SS/EA 454 “Killer Car” at Barrett-Jackson for $1.2 million dollars).

Verified by contacting the California Registry of Motor Vehicles this Chevelle SS LS5 sat unregistered in California from 2002 until 2005.  At some point during this time the Chevelle received a less than perfect paint job, a couple aftermarket door panels and a driver’s side seat cover.

In February of 2005 and with 63,470 miles showing on the odometer this 1971 Chevelle SS 454 was listed on eBay by Del Ray Auto of Marina Del Ray, California and ultimately bought by Robert Gagliardi of New Britain, Connecticut.  The following month, March of 2005, Mr. Gagliardi had the Chevelle shipped from California to Connecticut.   In 2007 he had the original numbers matching LS5 454 completely rebuilt by Horsepower Engineering in Ellington, CT.

The car comes with an original 1974 California Certificate of Registration, a matching set of original California Blue Plates, original owners manual with plastic sleeve and associated paperwork and service books.

Sale includes original BBC intake, distributer, air cleaner, seat covers, wheel center caps, original spare tire jack and hardware.

Car currently has 4 Firestone Wide Oval Bias tires, Mallory HEI ignition, Flowmaster 40 series exhaust, K&N air filter, Edelbrock Air filter housing, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Edelbrock 1411 750cfm Carburetor and a Xtreme Energy Comp Cam.  Oil just changed and all tune up parts recently replaced.

This Chevelle SS 454 being from California is in fairly good condition for its age however it does have paint bubbling on the rear of front fenders, behind the passenger wheel well and a  couple dime size holes starting to show on the passenger floor board.

The Chevelles factory color of code 62 Burnt Orange has been repainted once about 15 years ago however it is showing its age and needs to be repainted.   Chrome is all there but will need to be cleaned up.  Car is amazingly original and intact, from the working door buzzer and factory cigarette lighter to the 1971 correct heater bypass valve on the intake.  Car comes with its original intake, air cleaner, distributer, exhaust manifold preheat valve and several other parts. TH400 Transmission is not original to car and has a 1967 date tag.  Amp gauge and clock are not working at this time. This car is not a show car but with a small amount of work can be.  This car is better than a nice driver and being what it is deserves a full restoration.

Car is sold as is where is with no implied warranty.

Chevy Trax engineer says GMC version possible

Mon, Dec 8 2014

The Buick Encore is doing so well and its platform-mate the Chevrolet Trax has such good reviewer vibes going for it already, that a GMC version hasn't been ruled out. During the recent press launch, Automotive News asked lead engineer Al Manzor if the Trax could wear a GMC-branded suit, to which Manzor replied, "I think that is certainly possible." That's a long way from telling us anything about the probability of a GMC version of the Trax, and a legion of questions would need to be answered before it could happen. How would a GMC version be priced to leave room for the $26,465 GMC Terrain but not eat into sales of the $20,995 Trax or the $24,035 Encore? Or would that matter? Could it primarily be considered to encourage a new faction of The Yukon Set at the compact end, GMC buyers being famously committed to the marque? And of course, would there be a Denali version? It'll probably be a long while before we have any kind of answers, but if you want to see it happen, the door to your campaign of persuasion is at least ajar.

It won't be long now before Nissan Leaf finally overtakes Chevy Volt

Thu, Dec 25 2014

The two best-selling plug-in vehicles ever are the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. When the two vehicles launched in late 2010, the plug-in hybrid Volt quickly outpaced the all-electric Leaf and, despite lots of ups and downs since then, continues to hold on to a cumulative sales lead. This will change in 2015. Cumulatively, from November 2010 through November 2014, the Volt sold 71,867 units while the Leaf trails with 69,220. That's a difference of just 2,647. Based on current trends (with the Leaf selling around 2,500-2,700 a month and the Volt at 1,500-1,700) we expect the Leaf to take over either in January or, more likely, February when the Leaf takes over as the most popular plug-in car in America. Perhaps even March, depending on how low the numbers are for January and February, which are always slow sales months in the US. Of course, once it takes the crown, the Leaf can't expect to easily hold on for long. A new Volt is coming in the second half of 2015, likely beating a new Leaf to market. The question is, then, how well the Chevy sells with all of its new bells and whistles. Do you think the Volt will be the comeback kid once the 2016 model becomes available? This map reveals the cleanest vehicles based on location

Thu, Apr 28 2016

Naysayers love to point out how dirty the electricity grid mix is when it comes to charging electric vehicles. Curmudgeons are eager to jump into any conversation about EVs to enlighten the lucky listeners about how plug-in cars contribute to pollution, sometimes even throwing in a dash of climate-change denial for good measure. (Thanks, buddy. Pray, tell me more about the plight of oppressed SUV owners.) Unless someone buys an EV just because they think they're cool (which, yeah, they often are), they probably have at least a passable understanding of their environmental pros and cons. As many EV owners are already aware, location has a lot to do with any particular plug-in car's carbon footprint. Still, there's always more to know, and knowledge is not a bad thing, especially if one uses it to do the right thing. That's why this handy-dandy map from Carnegie Mellon University is so interesting. CMU researchers have compiled information about the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of various EVs based on where they're charged, as compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. The researchers looked at the Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt, and Prius Plug-In Hybrid versus the gasoline-dependent Toyota Prius hybrid and the stop-start-equipped Mazda3 with i-ELOOP and compared grams of CO2 emitted per mile. CMU takes into account the grid mix, ambient temperature, and driving patterns. CMU takes into account the grid mix based on county, as well as ambient temperature and driving patterns in terms of miles traveled on the highway or in the city. For instance, if you drive a Nissan Leaf in urban areas of California, Texas, or Florida, your carbon footprint is lower than it would be if you were driving a standard Toyota Prius. However, if you charge your Leaf in the Midwest or the South, for the most part, you've got a larger carbon footprint than the Prius. If you live in the rural Midwest, you'd probably even be better off driving a Mazda3. Throughout the country, the Chevrolet Volt has a larger carbon footprint than the Toyota Prius, but a smaller one than the Mazda3 in a lot of urban counties in the US. The Prius and Prius Plug-In are relatively equal across the US. Having trouble keeping it straight? That's not surprising. The comparisons between plug-in and gasoline vehicles are much more nuanced than the loudest voices usually let on.
