1986 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Wagon 4-door 5.0l on 2040-cars
Fairhaven, Massachusetts, United States
Are you looking for a great beach car, a family hauler, or just another vehicle to have on hand? Maybe this beauty will be for you. 1986 Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon - 3rd owner (2nd are family members who had it for most of its life and before that was the quintessential little old lady who only drove it on Sundays). I have only owned this car for a couple of months and I would keep it, but it is too large to fit in my garage and it has been garaged its entire life. With ONLY 65000 original miles, this car has plenty of life left in it. Of course, time takes its toll so I replaced the headliner with a brand new one, restiched the rear bench seat and piping, replaced the battery and alternator. This car starts up immediately, drives like a cloud and can even fit a piece of plywood in its cargo area with the seat down. Inside the car, it is all original with just a bit of wear on the driver's seat, but no tears and no cigarette holes. Yes, it is a non-smoker too. The headliner as I say is brand new. It features the third row of seating which faces backwards. I believe this is a base model car so it has crank windows, no AC and just an AM radio. The only thing that is power is the rear liftgate window. Everything works on this car and it was just inspected and passed with no issues. The carpets and upholstery were shampooed and new floor mats installed. I also put in a center console to hold cups as it was not common in those days to fit cars with cupholders. Before I started driving this as my every day driver, I had it completely looked over. Brakes have about 50% life left in them. 3 of the tires are in great shape, but one is balding and so it probably needs a front end alignment and balancing. Outside, the car has that very retro wood-look paneling and gleaming chrome. The paint is in above average shape and has not been repainted, but I did have it detailed and buffed. The glass is in great shape as are the moldings. Only the molding at the top of the hood is a bit loose. There is a bit of rust beneath each door, but not visible from the outside or when door is closed, but this is typical according to people who know these cars. The engine appears to be fairly clean and there are markings from when things were replaced. Knowing the previous owners, an elderly couple, they probably fastidiously maintained the car. It isn't a hot rod. Its smaller V8 engine, 5.0 liter, but don't ask me the size, moves the car well and maintains highway speeds with no effort at all. The bad: There is some rust on the rear chrome bumper which you can see. There is also a small dent in the rear passenger door that could be repaired. And it isn't a sipper of gas. I haven't measured the mileage, but let's say it would not be impressive. Of course, given it can carry lots of cargo or 8 passengers, I guess that gas mileage isn't that much of a concern. It takes regular unleaded. I have several more photos that I can send, but I am limited to a certain number here so feel free to ask. This car turns heads and you will got lots of thumbs up when you pull in for gas or stop at a stop light. Everyone remembers these cars and has a story to tell you. |

2014 Chevy Silverado priced from *$24,585, V8 gets better economy than Ford EcoBoost V6
Mon, 01 Apr 2013Chevrolet has thrown down the next hand in the pickup truck poker wars and revealed at least a couple of potential aces - depending on which numbers matter most to you. The 2014 2014 Silverado 1500 with its 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 gets 335 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, is mated to a six-speed automatic, can tow 11,500 pounds with the optional Max Trailer Package and costs the same as the outgoing Silverado, $24,585 (*including $995 destination fee). Chevy says the Silverado also stands atop the fuel economy charts when comparing any competitor with a V8 engine - and some competitors with V6 engines. The two-wheel drive model returns 16 miles per gallon city, 23 mpg highway, 19 mpg combined in two-wheel drive guise and 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined as a four-wheel drive.
For context around those numbers, the most fuel efficient V8-powered 2013 Ford F-150 pickups lose about two mpg in every metric compared to the Silverado, the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost returning 16 city, 18 highway and 22 combined in two-wheel drive. However, that EcoBoost does have 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. You can get a Ram 1500 with a 3.6-liter V6 that gets 25 mpg highway, but it has 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. The 2013 Ram with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and its 395 hp and 407 lb-ft drops one mpg in every category to the Silverado. Its tow rating is 200 pounds beyond its nearest competitor, the F-150 with the Max Trailer Tow Package.
Elsewhere, the new Silverado gets a quieter cab with a redesigned interior, a new bed with improved load-management possibilities, disc brakes all around, tweaked steering and suspension, along with free standard scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles.
Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017
Tue, Feb 17 2015Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).
Meet the mother-daughter team that's worked on almost every Chevy Volt
Sun, May 11 2014It's Mother's Day, and we're soft enough we love our mothers enough to share a new video from General Motors with you. In it, we meet Monique Watson (left) and Evetta Osbourne, a mother-daughter team that works at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly where GM makes the Chevy Volt (along with all of GM's other plug-in hybrids: the Opel Ampera, Holden Volt and Cadillac ELR). The two work side-by-side and have installed the lithium-ion battery pack on almost all of those vehicles - nearly 80,000 of them - since GM started making the pre-production Volts in 2009. In a prepared statement, Watson said that she likes working next to her mom, day in and day out, and they the two are totally in sync when it comes to putting the 400-pound, 16.5-kWh packs into the vehicle undersides. They two can also share stories throughout the day, and Watson said, "The arrangement has absolutely improved our relationship." Osborne started working at Detroit-Hamtramck in 1999, Watson since 2006. If you're driving a Volt today, you probably have them to thank for doing a bit of the work putting your car together. See a short video of them in action below. It's Always Mother's Day for Detroit-Hamtramck Duo Mother, daughter install lithium-ion battery pack in nearly all GM electric vehicles 2014-05-08 DETROIT – For Detroit resident Evetta Osborne, every day is Mother's Day. That's because she literally works side by side with her daughter, Monique Watson, at General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. They have installed the lithium-ion battery pack on nearly every Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, Holden Volt, and Cadillac ELR since production began. In fact, apart from vacation days and an occasional sick day, the mother-daughter duo has installed almost every battery pack since the Volt was in pre-production in 2009. The ELR launched earlier this year. All told – including Ampera – that's more than 80,000 electric vehicles. "We're a good team and our relationship is secondary when it comes to performing our jobs – but it's great to work alongside my daughter, said Osborne, a mother of five. Because the battery packs weigh more than 400 pounds each, automatic guided vehicles – robotic carts that use sensors to follow a path through the plant – deliver them just as the vehicle body structures glide into position overhead. The carts then lift the T-shaped packs, and Osborne and Watson guide them into the chassis and secure each one with 24 fasteners.
