It is impossible to talk about this car in a few short sentences so I apologize up front for the lengthy description.  Here is a teaser:  The rear license plate shown in the pictures was handmade for the car when it was in Africa.

History of "The Travlin Z"

I purchased this magnificent car from the original owner in October, 2001 and completed the restoration he had began in 1987.  "Jerry" placed the order for his new 1969 Daytona Yellow Z/28 on July 15, 1968 at the firm of Lendrum and Hartman LTD in London, England.  Jerry was an employee for the US government and was working at the embassy in London.  He took delivery of the car in early December of 1968.

His career took him to several embassies throughout the world and his beloved Z was a constant companion.  Here is the travel history:

July 1968 - Ordered in London, England
November 1968 - Arrived in London
April 1970 - Shipped to Washington D.C.
June 1970 - Driven to Mexico City (It is here in June 1972 that the car was painted Citrus Green)
July 1972 - Driven to Duncan, Ok.
September 1972 - Driven to Washington D.C. and then shipped to Istanbul, Turkey
September 1974 - Shipped to Dakar, Senegal
February 1975 - Driven from Dakar, taken by barge across Senegal River to Nouakchott, Mauratania
April 1976 - Driven back to Dakar for shipment to Washington D.C.
May 1976 - Driven across the USA for vacation
September 1976 - Arrives in Ottawa, Canada (not driven in winter months)
September 1979 - Driven to Washington D.C.
July 1981 - Driven to Kingston, Ok. where car was stored for 4 years.  This was the first time the car was not taken on assignment.
October, 1985 - Driven to Springfield, Va.
June, 1987 - Car taken off road and disassembled
June, 1995 - Car trailered to Reno, Nv.
October 19, 2001 - Car purchased by me and trailered to Southern California

Documentation

I have included pictures of some of the documentation for the car.  There are two thick folders of papers and pictures. Although not necessary due to the amount of documentation, I did have the car "certified" by Jerry MacNeish and his comments are pictured.  Here are some of the documentation highlights:

Original ordering receipt showing a $100 deposit on July 15, 1968
Original ordering form showing options and prices
A $2800 loan receipt dated August 30, 1968
Receipt from the shipping company Daniel Hustings LTD.
Receipt from the dock where the car arrived Harwich Dock Co. LTD.
As delivered vehicle invoice dated November 21, 1968 from General Motors LTD. on Stag Lane, Kingsbury, London
A vehicle registration from London
A vehicle registration form from Africa dated August 1975
Many registrations from Virginia and Oklahoma
Many pictures of the car in England, Turkey, Africa and Canada.

In addition to many other pieces there is also a detailed log book of every maintenance item done to the car.

Restoration

The car has 94,000 original miles and was disassembled in 1987.  Beginning in 1985 Jerry began buying new parts from the GM dealerships in anticipation of the restoration.  More on that in a minute.

The car has never had any rust.  However, due to the fact that Jerry's goal was to make this car just like new he decided to replace any panel that had so much as a ding.  When the car was first delivered to London there was a small dent in the driver side door and although the shipping company paid to have it fixed Jerry was always aware there was a bit of filler.  He did not want that again!  The left door skin and both quarters were replaced with new GM pieces.  The front fenders, header panel and lower valance are all new GM parts.

When I first looked at the car in Jerry's garage I was very impressed although it was in pieces.  He then took me into a bedroom to show me the new GM parts he had purchased and I was blown away!  Shelves of GM boxes!  The car has new old stock parts literally from the front bumper (NOS) to the back bumper (NOS).  Here are some of the NOS GM highlights:

Every piece of stainless (window trim, rocker moldings, wheel well moldings, trim rings, drip rails, etc.)
Every piece of rubber (door frame, roofrail, quarter window, window fuzzies, trunk, etc.)
Every piece of chrome (front & back bumpers, rally caps, quarter trim, inner & outer mirrors, etc.)

The side glass is all original and perfect.  The front and back glass have been replaced.

The Black deluxe interior is completely original except for the carpet (reproduction), radio (NOS), shift ball (reproduction), window cranks (NOS), glove box liner (NOS), inner mirror (NOS), and the package tray (NOS).  The seats, door panels, headliner, sunvisors, dash pad, console, rosewood accents, steering wheel and gauges are all as they left the factory.  The driver side seat bottom has an imperfection.  The corner of the door panel has a repaired imperfection.  The early Walnut steering wheel is mint.

The Daytona Yellow paint is 9.9 out of 10.  There are two imperfections that I have pictured.  One is at the bottom right lower corner of the back window (I chipped it installing the trim) and one speck on the right upper quarter that came up about 6 months after the car was painted.  I have had the speck looked at and the painter said color sanding it would not be advisable.  The rest of the car is outstanding.

The trunk is detailed with a NOS trunk mat, all of the original jack components and one of 5 original AD rally wheels.

The engine compartment was detailed using a picture Jerry took in 1970.  The placement of stickers, paint marks, routing of wires and hoses and other details were duplicated using the picture.  One example is the blending between Black and Yellow at the top of the firewall.

Driveline and Undercarriage

One could say this is a "matching numbers" car.  Many muscle cars these days that claim to have "matching numbers" actually have very few of their original driveline components.  Parts have been bought at swap meets and Ebay to cobble together their "matching numbers" claim.

Here is what this car has:  Every driveline component is original to the car except the short block.  In July of 1972 Jerry had received his next assignment and he was told by someone who had just from the same region that there was no premium gas and his high compression engine would have trouble.  Jerry went to the GM dealer in Oklahoma and purchased a new low compression short block.  He then installed all of the original components back on the new short block.

I had a friend that had a perfectly dated original DZ block with it's original broach stamp and a VIN number down by the oil filter (came from a Van Nuys built car).  I had the VIN number of this car stamped on the engine pad (correct for an early Norwood built car).  I left the VIN number of the other car down by the oil filter.  The fact that the short block was changed is also documented in Jerry's log book.

Here are components the car left the factory with:  Heads, intake manifold, distributor, carburetor, exhaust manifolds, valve covers, fan blade.  The M21 Muncie transmission is original to the car.  The 373 BU 12 bolt rear is original to the car.  The original 2 piece front rotors and all 5 AD rally wheels are original to the car.

My History With The Travlin Z

It took me about 2 years to complete the restoration and the car was shown for the first time at a local car show in May, 2004.  I planned on having it nationally judged at some point but work and three kids hampered that plan.  I drive the car every few months on a 3 mile loop around the house.  The car has about 300 miles on it since the restoration was complete.

It needs a few things since it has been almost 10 years since I finished it.  I described the imperfections in the paint and the interior.  In addition, the speedometer quit working at some point.  I pulled the cable and it is intact.  So the problem is with the speedo or the gear in the trans.  The car could also use a good detail but it still is a beautiful machine!!

You will not find a true American muscle car with the history this car has.  The fact that it's a real RS Z/28 and has the documentation to back up the incredible history puts it over the top!!

I can be reached at 760-802-9376 with any questions or feel free to ask through ebay.

Yes, I do have car listed for sale elsewhere and a reasonable offer could stop the auction.

I will require a $500 non-refundable deposit with 24 hours of the close of auction.  I don't mind storing the car while arrangements are made.  I welcome and encourage personal inspection.

Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Sunday Drive: Spying an automotive future of performance

Sun, May 13 2018

I spy, with my little eye ... the future of the automotive world here in the United States. That pretty much sums up this week's Sunday Drive, in which we pull out the most popular stories on Autoblog of the previous week and try to draw some sort of conclusion as to what binds them all together. This week, it's spy shots, starting with one of the biggest and baddest muscle cars the world has ever seen: the Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The Hellish coupe gets a new hood for 2019 with dual scoops, but that's about the only meaningful change for the new model year. No matter. As long as it's packing 700-plus horsepower under those two hood scoops, all will be right with the world. Moving on, we take keep the performance angle but move it from the street to the dirt with a new version of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 that we think is probably called the Bison. We think it'll keep the high-tech suspension bits of the regular ZR2, but add expedition gear that may include a snorkel and a winch. Which, if true, is pretty dang cool. Keeping the truck theme is the 2019 GMC Sierra. There's nothing particularly noteworthy about the trim level in which the truck was spied, and that's what makes this specific example interesting. Base-model trucks almost never get much attention, but they sell in droves to workers who need an honest-to-goodness truck for work or play and don't care about bells, whistles, or massive chrome badges. And finally we have the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, which is on fire on the sales floor right now. But those are all V6-powered Wranglers flying off the showroom floor. Soon, a turbocharged four-cylinder engine option will become available, and now we know that it will return up to 23 miles per gallon in the city and 25 on the highway. That makes it the most fuel efficient Wrangler that Jeep has ever sold. As always, stay tuned to Autoblog this week for all the automotive news that's fit to publish. 2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat with twin-scoop hood spied with no camouflage Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison caught testing 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 spied in base trim level 2018 Jeep Wrangler four-cylinder fuel economy revealed Spy Photos Chevrolet Dodge GMC Jeep Truck Coupe SUV Off-Road Vehicles Performance dodge challenger srt hellcat sunday drive

Netflix to feature electric cars from GM and others in programming

Sun, Feb 5 2023

LOS ANGELES — Netflix has unveiled a new star for some of its upcoming programming: electric vehicles from General Motors and other automakers. The streaming service announced an agreement on Thursday to feature vehicles including the Chevrolet Bolt, the electric GMC Hummer pickup and the Cadillac Lyriq in TV series and films "where relevant." The companies will highlight the partnership in a commercial featuring Will Ferrell that will air during the Feb. 12 Super Bowl. Netflix and GM called the agreement "part of a commitment to a more sustainable future." Financial terms were not disclosed. Netflix said it will help creators "better understand how EVs can complement and enhance their stories." Shows that will feature GM's electric vehicles include "Love is Blind," "Queer Eye" and "Unstable." Netflix productions also will include electric vehicles made by other automakers, the company said.   Marketing/Advertising TV/Movies Chevrolet GM GMC Hummer
