Today we have listed a really clean and super nice 1982 Chevrolet Short Narrow bed / Stepside pickup  that is adult owned, has had tons of cash lavished on it and is one of the nicest shorty Chevies I have ever seen. This belongs to a friend of mine, and I am listing it for him. I will do my best to describe it so that you feel you know it, and to point out any and all problems (darn few). It's hard to show the total story of this pickup in the words I use, but I have added as many pictures as possible - I tried to use pictures that covered the overall feel and look of the car.A couple of the interior shots are a bit fuzzy - I apologize for that, but didn't catch that until today and just before the start time for the auction. I use lower resolution so that anyone in the world can download them with relative ease. The pictures are mostly shot at Evergreen Air Museum here in McMinnville, the home of the one and only Spruce Goose. They graciousl let me photograph there on the grounds and around the planes. If you are ever in this area please come take a look at the Air Museum, Space Museum and the awesome water park. There is even a chapel now and some other things to look at, touch and see. IT's an awesome place!  Please be aware that this car is advertised and for sale locally, nationally and globally, and we do reserve the right to end this auction at any time if the vehicle sells before auction ends. This truck is definitely for sale and definitely on the money price wise. If you are SERIOUS about the truck - please call my cell # 503.580.6225 if I don't answer the first time - try again later - if I am at work I may not be able to answer your call but WILL get back to you. Please be considerate of the time. This is an awesome pickup - Buy it today and be the envy of those who hesitated and missed it.

I have personally been a fan of step-side pickups for a long long time - in fact, I always prefer a stepside to a fleetside. This is one of the nicest, cleanest, most tasteful ones I have ever come across. My friend has owned this for nearly ten years, and in those years he has done a beautiful job of 'tweaking' it to make it his own. A few years ago he moved out to the country to a beautiful home, but one with quite a lengthy gravel road. He has finally gotten tired of cleaning it every time it's out, and more often than not, just not driving it because of that very reason. Really that's the only reason he is selling it. He's got easily double what he wants for the truck in it, but that's how this hobby goes sometimes. Let's go through the truck from the powertrain on out. The engine has just a few hundred miles on it, and is a balanced 350 with a 272 cam. It runs great and has just the right little bit of lope to it, but not so much that it's hard to drive, or annoying. It runs very sweetly, and is very healthy. It's really indicative of how everything has been done on this truck, which is well. The carb is a new Edelbrock 650 with an electric choke. The air cleaner and valve covers are billet and like new. A new HEI distributor feeds spark and it is fed by a MSD Digital 6A electronic ignition. A brand new Optima battery provides the grunt for starting and electrical duties. Exhaust duties are handled by a new 3" stainless steel system with turbo type mufflers and pencil tips out the back. The transmission is a 700R4 and is mildly worked over, but shifts smooth and nice - this was JUST done in the last month. The previous trans just never shifted right and the owner decided that he would do it right, instead of selling it 'not right'. The differential is a 3:73 Posi unit, which is a great all around gear ratio for the overdrive transmission. All of this functions just like it should, no weird noises, clunks or issues. The front brakes are Performance Brakes with cross drilled rotors, not just 'red painted' calipers. The rears are new, but are the stock drum. A hefty front sway bar helps keep the truck planted, and the low stance does the rest. All of the lowering was done with BellTech components - springs, shocks, etc, and it's as low as it can go without doing bags. The rear frame is C-notched. 18x8 Cragar SS wheels are wrapped in Nitto 255/50R18 rubber, about 3k worth of wheels and tires and all are like new - they are same size front and rear so that they can be rotated. All of this works together well with no squeaks or rattles and nothing funny at all. The seat time I spent in this truck was truly enjoyable. A properly lowered truck rides wonderfully, and this is as good as they get. Inside, a Vintage Air setup handles heat and ice cold air conditioning. It's so much cleaner than the factory set up, which I find funny for me to say, but it's true. The interior has all been worked over, new weatherstrips, new windshield, lots and lots of new. The 96K miles are original that we know of. The tunes are handled by a New Alpine AM/FM/CD unit with 4 speakers. A viper alarm handles the alarm duties as well as the power door lock/unlock with remote operation. Power windows have been added, and there is a new wireless cruise control. Tilt wheel is stock, and the column is wearing a billet dress up kit - and it is topped off with a Grant leather steering wheel. The carpet's been replaced and everything is clean and tidy - there is also billet dress up on the dash, which isn't cracked or damage as they usually are. One reason the truck is such a joy to drive (other than the great ride and A/C) is the use of Dynamat throughout - behind the cab, roof, doors, floor, firewall etc. The headliner is new, and not droopy as they usually are. There are also dark tinted windows. The owner is a non smoker, so no worries there whatsoever. Just clean and nice inside! Outside the truck is just flat out beautiful. I love the miles deep black finish, and it's super clean, super straight and super sanitary. There is simply no rust on any body panel. It's straight, the paint lays flat and is shiny with a minimum of orange peel. This isn't a show truck, it's a driver, but it's a high quality driver. The cowl hood is new and is all steel. The chrome front bumper is new and from a later truck and has no park lights, they have been moved up next to the grille, which is a billet aluminum one that has been powder coated glossy black. The headlights are new, and are euro style Quartz Halogen. The park lights are euro style as well with LED lamps. Great light and a great look. Out back is a 1985 El Camino bumper, there is a HD standard size hitch hidden beneath the flip up license plate. The bed, as you can see has been pretty much left alone and is the original wood - the owner liked using the truck when he wanted to, so didn't do anything trick here. It's a little dusty from his road but holds a spare, jack, and tools and also a custom fit car cover that comes with the truck. The bed is covered by a Checkmate hard tonneau cover that is hinged and gas strut lifted, it also will cone off if you want to have it off. There are no tailgate chains to beat up the paint, there is a strap that keeps the tailgate in place if you want it down. Lot's of other little custom tricks here and there, but I have covered the major stuff. I like the use of a Custom Deluxe vs. a Silverado, lots less chrome for a super clean look. the stance of the truck, (stance is everything!) is just perfect, as you will see when you look through the pictures. This truck is EXACTLY as it is always kept, not primped up, detailed up, phoneyed, rattle canned or shined up in any way other that it's usual state - it IS fussed over, taken care of, respected and very loved by the current owner - he really has touched, fixed, or replaced anything that needed done, he's just that kinda guy. The truck isn't rain driven, and we don't use salt on our roads in the winter, so there is no corrosion issue whatsoever, nor are we so close to the ocean that the salt problem eats at the vehicles as it does on the coast. It is older adult owned, non smoker owned and always garaged. Always. Carfax is clean, as is the title - no brands, or anything odd at all.  This is one of the nicest trucks you will find for any dollar amount, and I know you can't build it for what we are asking. This is a turn-key, well sorted vehicle that is ready for you to enjoy, and drive, right now. We have the title in hand, and are ready to sell - this is a truck you can drive, show, have fun with, enjoy and not need to pile a bunch of money into. If you are the one to buy it - be prepared for lots of looks, thumbs up, and conversations wherever you park. It's really just that nice.   If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we will answer questions to the best of our ability. Thank you!

Mustang, Camaro, Challenger gallop onto USPS pony car postage stamp set

Tue, Jul 19 2022

Some of America's most iconic cars are about to be immortalized on postage stamps. A new set by the U.S. Postal Service will celebrate the the golden era of pony cars, featuring five classic examples of Detroit iron. Each one is beautifully illustrated in oil-on-canvas style, with subjects in motion and sunlight glinting off the chrome, and would add a nice touch to any first-class letter. The pony car segment was all about (relatively) small, sporty alternatives to the full-size land yachts of the 1960s. They typically came equipped with 6-cylinder engines or small-block V8s. The category was named after the Ford Mustang, hence  the name. Some, though, argue that the Plymouth Barracuda, which was launched a couple of weeks before the Mustang, is the first. Luckily, the Falcon-based Mustang's distinct styling generated a sales sensation, or we might be calling them fish cars. Appropriately, one of the featured cars is a Mustang. But it's not just any Mustang. The 1969 Boss 302, seen here resplendent in Bright Yellow, was created for the hotly-contested SCCA Trans-Am racing series. One of its main rivals would have been the 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28, also created specifically for the series, and is included in the set in Fathom Green. Representing Auburn Hills in the set is a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T in Plum Crazy, while Southfield's American Motors gets a nod with an AMC Javelin in Big Bad Orange. The Mustang's platform cousin, a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7, is portrayed in a gorgeous Burgundy Poly that almost looks incomplete without Neko Case on the hood. It's not the first time the USPS has honored America's rich car culture on its stamps. In 2013, it issues a series of muscle car stamps with the help of Richard Petty. That set featured a 1966 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 1970 Chevelle SS, 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda and, of course, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. Another set in 2016 featured classic pickup trucks. Going further back, a 2008 release had chroed and finned automobiles of the 1950s and a 2005 release featured sporty American cars of the same era. The pony car stamps will debut on August 25 at the Great American Stamp Show in Sacramento, California in partnership with the American Philatelic Society. The public is free to attend the dedication ceremony, but you must RSVP first. After that, they will be available at local post offices and on line at the USPS store.

2018 Autoblog Technology of the Year finalists

Wed, Jan 10 2018

After months of prepping and several days of testing, we narrowed the field for Autoblog's 2018 Tech of the Year award to the Nissan Rogue with ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system, the Lexus LC 500h and its new hybrid powertrain, and the Chevy Colorado ZR2 and its trick Multimatic spool-valve off-road shocks. Three very different cars with very different technologies duking it out for the award. Look for news of our winner at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. We hand out this award every year to the technology or feature that we feel moves the bar forward for the automotive industry. Read more here on how our testing process works. We discuss, debate and count up score sheets, judging each vehicle and technology on a few different criteria. Is its purpose noteworthy? Does it work well? Does it advance the industry? The Nissan Rogue with ProPilot Assist was actually a prototype, as the technology will first debut in the 2018 Nissan Leaf. Still, we're here to test the tech and not the car. ProPilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control system combined with lane-keeping assistance. The system uses sonar, radar and a number of cameras for some light semi-autonomous driving and enhanced safety. While these systems aren't new individually, Nissan's system is affordable, intuitive, and coming to a mainstream product — democratizing the tech in a novel way, if you will. That's why it's here. The Lexus LC 500h uses a new powertrain that Lexus has dubbed the Multi-Stage Hybrid System. Basically it combines two types of transmissions — a CVT and a four-speed automatic — in a single unit mated to a naturally aspirated V6. That's complex and unorthodox technology, and Lexus engineered it to give drivers the efficiency of a CVT without sacrificing driving enjoyment. The package is subtle, working in the background to create a nearly seamless driving experience. It's engaging in a way most other hybrids can only dream of. The fact that it's wrapped in such gorgeous sheetmetal only makes things better. The Multimatic spool valve shocks in the Chevy Colorado ZR2 might seem low-tech compared to ProPilot Assist and the Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid, but they represent a completely novel application of a technology that several years ago was so expensive that it was reserved for top-tier race cars. Like the LC 500h, these shocks really change your perception of how a vehicle like this should drive.

Junkyard Gem: 1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus

Fri, Jun 16 2023

General Motors sold second- and third-generation Suzuki Cultuses with Geo or Chevrolet Metro badging in the United States from 1989 through 2001 model years, and we've all seen plenty of those cars on the street over the years. The first-generation Cultus was sold here as well, with Chevrolet Sprint badges, and I've found a rare example of the Sprint five-door hatchback in a Northern California car graveyard. The Chevy Sprint first appeared on the West Coast as a 1985 model, then became available everywhere in the United States for the 1986 through 1988 model years (in Canada, it was sold as the Pontiac Firefly). It was available here as a hatchback with three or five doors; for 1986 only, the five-door was badged as the Sprint Plus. Soon enough, The General would be selling many more Asian-built cars with Detroit badges here. Isuzu I-Marks were sold as Chevrolet/Geo Spectrums starting in the 1986 model year, while Daewoo provided the Pontiac LeMans two years later. Under the hood, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder rated at 48 horsepower. The five-door Sprint cost $5,580 in 1986, which was $200 more than the three-door (those prices would be $15,445 and $14,891 in 2023 dollars). I've documented seven discarded Sprints prior to this one (including an extremely rare Turbo Sprint), and all of them were three-doors; we can assume that price was the most important factor for Sprint buyers. Gasoline prices were crashing hard during the middle 1980s, but memories of gas lines and odd-even-day fuel rationing from 1979 remained strong. What cars competed with the '86 Sprint on sticker price? Well, there was no way to undercut the hilariously affordable (and terrible) Yugo GV, which cost $3,990. The much bigger (but still pretty bad) Hyundai Excel listed at $4,995, while Toyota would sell you a sturdy (but zero-fun) Tercel starting at $5,448. Even the wretched Chevy Chevette — yes, it was still available in 1986 — cost $5,645. The original buyer of this car was willing to shell out an extra $395 to get an automatic instead of the base five-speed manual. That's about $1,093 in today's money. This car must have been slow. By the end, the doors were held shut with duct tape, but it still stayed alive until age 37. 53 miles per gallon on the highway! It does everything. The camels of the highway.
