1975 Chevy G-10 Shorty van. I picked up this van thinking I would turn it into a vintage/retro style carpet cleaning van. The 6 cylinder engine runs good, it was originally a 3 speed manual looking at the build sheet, now it has a TH-350 automatic. The first night I drove this home I was headed down the highway and the speedo only was reading at 45 mph, I asked my girlfriend why she was so far behind me, and she said when you hit 90 I figured you could get the ticket.....so the speedo isn't accurate at all, probably tall gears in the rearend for the manual trans and that's why it's so far off.
It leaks a little oil, probably burns a little too, I just got a brand new battery, changed the oil,  put a new waterpump and radiator in it last week along with a new belt. It doesn't have power anything, manual brakes, manual steering, no A/C. I've never calculated it, but it probably does pretty good on gas. The wheels and tires are custom 17x8.5 with Toyo 255/60R17 tires, they are all the same so you can rotate them front to back. the tires have about 65% or so left and are in great shape with even wear.
The paint is original, and obviously gone on the roof. My plan was to wetsand it all out and just clear the whole thing, it would look ratty, vintage, ugly to some, but I thought it would be cool. The inside is completely gutted, the floor in the very center has surface rust, some genius put foam between a wood floor and the metal, not a big deal and it isn't rusted through. It was pretty much a hippie van when I got it, had a place for a bed and was all wrapped in a nasty blue plush velour crap..... I hauled it to the dump, you can thank me later. ick!
So, you basically a getting a nice solid, original chevy van to build or use as you desire. I don't see any reason why you couldn't fly out and drive it home. In the back you get a chevy bench seat to mount or toss, the stock wheels, and some aluminum running boards. the only thing that really needs fixed is the roof vent that was added in the back, it needs a new cover, but I'd rather see someone take it out and weld it up the way it came.
It's going to sell to the highest bidder. I just put over $200 into battery, radiator, waterpump, it has a $1500 set of wheels and tires on it, I'm setting the opening bid less than the wheels alone...... It has about a half tank of gas in it too.

Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

Tue, Feb 17 2015

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).

GM finds steering flaw, decides it doesn't warrant a recall

Tue, Apr 14 2015

Guess what? General Motors is back in the spotlight for not recalling something. This time, though, not only does the company have an argument against a recall campaign, but its position is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to The New York Times, over 50 owners of GM vehicles have reported instances of stuck or seized steering after driving long distances without moving the wheel. One owner complained to NHTSA that the "locked" steering of their 2013 Buick Verano caused a collision with a concrete barrier in a construction zone. Along with the 2013 to 2014 model year Verano sedans, Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu sedans are also affected. Considering the popularity of those models, GM needs to have a reason for not issuing a recall, right? "Based on a very low rate of occurrence – ranging from less than one half to less than two incidents per thousand vehicles – and the fact that the condition is remedied when the wheel is turned, GM determined this was not a safety issue," spokesman Alan Adler told The Times. The company has, however, issued a technical service bulletin for owners that complain of the problem. The fix is nothing more than a software update that is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles from new. NHTSA cited GM's actions, along with descriptions of the problems from customers, in its decision not to issue a recall, with spokeswoman Catherine Howden saying, "the symptoms described would be a brief, perceptible change in steering feel that has little to no effect on the driver's ability to safely steer the vehicle." "When terms like 'notchy,' 'stick,' 'slip' or 'feel' are used, it does not indicate a meaningful increase in steering effort," Howden told The Times via email. What do you think? Is GM in the wrong here? Should there be a recall, or is the issue so limited as to not warrant one? Have your say in Comments. Watch NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon put one over on a used car dealer... sorta

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Full Disclosure: in my younger days, I loved nothing more than tormenting passengers with my behind-the-wheel hijinks. Once, after a particularly artful handbrake turn on a two-lane at around 50 miles per hour, I left one backseat occupant crying in their own lap. This isn't necessarily something to be proud of, but it gives you a glimpse into why it is that I find this ad from Pepsi so damn disappointing. The premise is beautiful. Take NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, give him a disguise and set him loose upon some unsuspecting used car dealer. Hilarity ensues.
Except that this Pepsi Max commercial is so obviously staged, it can't help but feel like some ham-fisted marketing fail. From the strategically placed aftermarket cupholder mounted mid-dash for the hidden camera to the fact that the supposed dealer Camaro is displayed as a 2009 model (Hint: Chevrolet didn't make any), this clip is about as organic as a Twinkie. Still, we would never turn down a chance to watch Gordon thrash on a rental-spec coupe - only problem is, he probably didn't even do the driving himself. Check it out below.
