Up for auction (no reserve) is a sweet running, HIGHLY original, low mileage 1957 Chevy 210. The 210 was situated between the entry level 150 and the higher end Bel Air trim levels. This is a desirable two-door post car, with a manual transmission (3 speed on the column or "three on the tree") backing the original, smooth-running 140hp Blue Flame inline six. Sure, GM made a lot of 1957 Chevys, but unmolested cars like this are becoming hard, if not impossible, to find these days. The original interior is in excellent shape and most of the paint appears original too. The factory stainless steel VIN tag and aluminum firewall data plate remain in place. The data plate decodes as Harbor Blue exterior with light blue vinyl and blue cloth interior, which is as the car sits today. The contrasting white top and white painted strakes are correct for a 210. It's hard (for me) to put a value on such an original car, but the NADA Classic value guide for a 1957 Chevy 210 two door sedan with six cylinder engine is ~$13-26k, with an average retail price of $17.5k.

Condition:
The interior appears to be original and is in very nice condition, with no rips or tears in the seats. This car left the factory without a radio or seat belts, and it has remained that way since. I believe a good portion of the paint on the car is original (save for perhaps the driver's front quarter lower side, which has a little more shine to it...although any repaint there is still very old given the patina) and the only rust on the body is surface rust where the paint has come off over time (top passenger side of roof and behind driver's door on the side, see photos). The jams, sills, floors, drip rails and trunk are all very dry. The only area really needing attention is the driver's rear door jam area (see photos). The frame is very dry as well, seeming to benefit from factory undercoating from new and low miles. Wheels appear to be original 14" body colored pieces. This is a 66 year old, unrestored car, which means it has a few dents and trim dings here and there, and a rock chip in the front windshield, which I have tried to highlight in the photos. The body dents are confined to a pair of fist-sized ones, one between the lower front of the passenger door and the lower back edge of the front wheel opening, and the other at the rearmost edge of the white side strake on the passenger side; both are visible in the side photos. The chrome is all in excellent condition, save for a ding/crack in the front bumper, just below the passenger side headlight. After I took these photos I adjusted the front rubber hood stop on the driver's side, which brought the hood down in line with the front bumper trim and closed up the gap seen in the photos.

Current mileage is right at 64,500, but may be a few over that by auction's end. I put ~500 miles on the old girl last week in 90+ degree Georgia heat and she didn't skip a beat; the original "57A" date-coded radiator performed beautifully, thanks to a re-core (3 core) in 2007. The brakes are the original, non-power-assisted drums. They work well on this car, although a quick stab can result in an initial pull left or right. The three speed manual is synchromesh only in 2nd and 3rd gears, which means shifting into first can take some practice to avoid crunching. Steering is very good for a car of this vintage with very little "sawing" of the wheel required (see video). I installed an Optima Red Top battery two years ago. The charging system is still the original 12V generator type and it works perfectly. New points were installed earlier this year. All lights/blinkers work, including the glove box and dome lights. The original headliner has seen better (read: cleaner) days, but it's still up there and not sagging. There's a mouse hole between the front sun visors.

All four side window cranks and vent window cranks work as they should. The original one barrel carb comes with the car, but it is currently fitted with a two barrel unit with progressive throttle linkage. The weatherstripping is crumbling or has rotted away completely in a few places. There is a single key for glove box, trunk and door locks. The same key will fit into the ignition cylinder, but the ignition switch will turn and start the car with or without a key.

Terms and conditions:
The '57 is sold on a bill of sale and a current Georgia registration in my name. It does not have a title as GA does not require them for cars of this vintage. No warranty is expressed or implied; this unrestored, vintage Chevy is sold as-is. I will not ship the car, but I will make myself available to meet with the shipper of your choice. I would not hesitate to fly in and drive this car cross country if you have the time. It has been stone reliable for me and is in great working order. The Corvette-style dog dish poverty caps shown on the car are NOT included in the auction. A set of fully size Chevy wheel covers fitted in the sixties are included with the sale. If you really like the dog dish caps, contact me and maybe we can work out a deal, but they are also readily available on eBay. I can deliver it to the port in Savannah, GA if it's going overseas, and of course once all funds have cleared. Your bid is a commitment to buy, not an option to buy, so please ask any and all questions before bidding. I encourage would-be buyers to see the car first hand (by appointment) if at all possible. I reserve the right to end this auction at any time and for any reason.

For some recent footage of the car on the road, please see "1957 Chevy 210 Time Capsule" on my youtube channel, BellmouthRacing.

Check my feedback and bid with confidence. Good luck!

Corvette Stingray Convertible images mysteriously appear on web, so we add our own

Tue, 22 Jan 2013

It was inevitable that we'd see the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray topless at some point, but that didn't make us any less interested when a pair of supposedly leaked official images showed up on theautoinsiderblog.com last week. We posted them on our Facebook page, but held off reporting on them here until we could get a little more information.
Those images, which feature a dark red car on a sterile black studio background, supposedly first appeared on the website of diecast model maker Maisto. A Chevrolet spokesman has been reported saying that they are "not official images released by Chevrolet PR," which isn't a denial they're the real deal, but neither is it a confirmation.
Close examination of the photos suggest they could be official shots of the Corvette Stingray Convertible, and while some have doubted their authenticity due to a lack of vents (which were seen on the C7s that debuted in Detroit last week), it could be that the images are of a base model car without the Z51 package that doesn't require the extra venting and cooling.

How long will the 'golden age' of performance last?

Sat, Mar 26 2016

High-powered sports and luxury cars were everywhere at the New York Auto Show, prompting the obvious question for enthusiasts: How long will this golden age of performance last? Industry leaders have some time before regulations elevate the Corporate Average Fuel Economy level in 2025. Even then, they expect cars rippling with power to survive in some form. "Is it the end of an era," I don't think so," said Ola Kallenius, Daimler AG board member for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales. "That performance element of individual mobility I don't think will ever go away." Kallenius, who oversaw the company's AMG division from 2010-2013, expects it to continue to grow. Last year, AMG sold a record 68,875 units around the world, an increase of 44.6 percent over 2014, with strong growth in the US, China, and Germany. Still, there's always the potential for gas to spike, and pending fuel economy regulations are looming. That could lead AMG to add electrification to its products, Kallenius said, pointing to the electric SLS as a test case. Chevy is also thinking ahead, said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro. He wouldn't bite when asked about electrification for the Camaro (he did say "never say never"), but admitted in 2025 "it's going to be pretty tough to sell V8s." For now, things are rosy for muscle cars, and Chevy confidently showcased the 640-hp Camaro ZL1 in coupe and convertible form in New York. "I think that this is truly the golden age of performance," Oppenheiser said. It's hard to disagree. News & Analysis News: The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was a show-stopper in New York. Analysis: There was a palpable energy when this RF — for Retractable Fastback — was revealed the night before the show at a trendy off-site venue near the Hudson River. Even as a parade of SUVs and flashy luxury cars rolled out the rest of the week, the Miata remained a hot topic. The Retractable Fastback is really a clever targa top, with part of the roof stowing behind the seats, adding about 100 pounds compared to the standard convertible. It makes the car more practical and arguably more attractive. The RF continues Mazda's tradition of selling the Miata with a hardtop variant. The first and second generations offered a detachable one, and a power retractable hardtop (a $1,700 option) was available on third-gen models. Judging by its reception in New York, the RF could prove to be even more popular than its predecessors.

GM recalling 1.4 million older vehicles for oil leak fire risk

Tue, Oct 27 2015

General Motors is recalling 1,411,332 older vehicles with its 3.8-liter V6 yet again due to a fire risk. Specifically, there are 1,283,340 of them in the US, and the affected models are the: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 1997- 2004 Buick Regal The fault with these vehicles is that oil can drip onto the hot exhaust manifold during hard braking, which can potentially cause of fire. In the last six years, there have 19 reported minor injuries from this problem but no crashes or fatalities, according to the company. Spokesperson Alan Adler also told Autoblog: "GM has reports of 1,345 fires in vehicles that were repaired under two previous recalls for this issue." At this time, GM is still developing a remedy for the problem. According to Adler, the company advised owners to park these vehicles outside for the previous recalls. "The cars can be safely driven. In cases where a customer reported an engine fire while driving, smoke was reported, which would be an indication of a malfunction," he said. This is GM's fourth recall for this problem since 2008, according to The Detroit News. At one point it was believed that aging valve cover gaskets allowed the oil to leak out and drip onto the manifold. A campaign in 2009 covered nearly 1.5 million of these models through the 2003 model year for the same issue. At the time, dealers installed new spark plug wire retainers as a fix. Related Video: GM Statement: General Motors is recalling 1,283,340 older sedans and coupes in the U.S. from the 1997 to 2004 model years because drops of oil may be deposited on the hot exhaust manifold through hard braking, which can cause engine compartment fires. GM is working on a remedy. The company is aware of post-repair fires in some vehicles but no crashes or fatalities. There have been 19 reported minor injuries over the last six years. These vehicles with 3.8-liter V6 3800 engines are affected: 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2004 Buick Regal. Including Canada, Mexico and exports, the total population is 1,411,332.
