Here is a short history of this fantastic car:

  • The car featured in this auction is a 1956 Chevrolet Belair 2 dr Hardtop. This 1956 Bel Air was orginally painted aqua/white and had a 265 cu.in. engine with a 3 speed transmission. The car now has a 327 cubic inch engine with a 4 speed Muncie close ratio transmission.

  • The actual year of the 327 cubic inch block is unknown as the current owner had the engine stored for several years. The 327 cubic inch engine was only produced for eight years (1962-69) but since the engine in this car has a four inch bore and the vent tube is located behind the distributor, this is consistent with an early 327 cubic inch engines. Additionally, the crank shaft that came with the block is 327 STEEL FORGED CRANK, not a cast crank. Perhaps from a Corvette?

  • When the engine was rebuilt, it was bored .040 over and the crank main and rod journals were polished .010 under. Before the machine shop that rebuilt the engine put it back together the engine was balanced.

  • in 2009, the upper end of the engine was reconfigured using an Edelbrock 2009 upper end package that resulted in the engine found in this 1956 Bel Air Hard Top. Here is a picture of the Edelbrock package that was used.

  • Included in this high performance package was an Edelbrock Rollin' Thunder Hydraulic roller cam and Edelbrock RPM Performance heads:

  • In addition to the Edelbrock Rollin' Thunder cam and the Edelbrock aluminum heads mentioned above, the engine sports an Edelbrock intake manifold upon which sits a new Holly 780 cfm carburator. The installation of the high performance kit now rates the engine in this 1956 Bel Air 2 door Hardtop at 435 hp.

  • When the engine is running, the exhaust is expelled through Sanderson Shorty Headers, going through a 2 1/2 inch exhaust system that is attached to Flowmaster mufflers.

  • Since the final rebuild, the car has been rarely driven so the 327 cubic inch engine has only 1000 to 2000 miles on it. .

  • Power from the 4 speed Muncie transmission is sent to a rebuilt stock 3:55 posi-traction rear end that was rebuilt by a friend. The transmission has no issues and it works very well with the Hurst shifter.

    MODIFICATIONS AND UPGRADES

  • As mentioned earlier, approximately 10 years ago the car was given a frame off restoration with all work being completed by the owner . The frame off restoration took two years to complete. Everything on the car is new except for the clock, the rear springs and some of the stainless. However, most of the stainless was polished and buffed by the owner.

  • The frame off restoration showed that he car had some small rust areas but after the body was sand blasted the areas of rust were patched with sheet metal and today, there is absolutely no rust in this vehicle.

  • The current paint job is just like the original paint job and it consists of a basecoat clear coat of Aqua with pearl and solid white. The Aqua turns blue or green at different angles in the sunlight. When the car was reassembled, there were approximately 4 small paint chips on the body, but they have been touched up.

  • Additional Resto-modifications include 2 in dropped spindles with front disc brakes,

  • power steering, additional temperature and heat gauges located below the beautiful dash and a Sun tachometer to aid in correctly shifting the Muncie four speed transmission.

  • Because the car was driven rarely after completion, due to loose brake line fittings that were not properly tightened when installed, brake fluid leaked onto 2 areas of the frame and bubbled the paint. This has been touched up and with black paint and the problem areas look good. Here is a collage of pictures of the underside of the car so that you can see how clean it is:

  • To complete your "tour" of this car, here are some pictures showing the interior of the 1956 Chevrolet:

  • And finally, this 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 door Hard Top is not a $100,000 show car, but it is one of the nicest completely restored, rust free, clean 1956 Bel Air Hard Tops currently available on the auction market.

Check out the Cragar Rims (front 15x7 & rear 15x8) sporting brand new Grand Am X/T tires.

  • A question you are probably all asking is does this 1956 Bel Air have air conditioning? The answer is NO, but it does have a brand new Griffin Cross Flow radiator that is set up for an air conditioning system. If you want a project so that you can call this car your own, you just need to put in an A/C compressor and a "few other items" and attach it to the Griffin radiator. Other wise, when you drive this car down the road, you will have to use the car's "4-55" air conditioning system - four windows open at 55 miles per hour!

Here is a collage of general interest views of the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Two Door Hardtop. These pictures will allow you to see additional aspects of the Bel Air that will help you to understand that this Two Door Hardtop is a fun car to drive. If you drive this car to a car show, you more than likely will win a trophy.

GM Recalling Another 2.7 Million Vehicles In Five Separate Campaigns

Thu, May 15 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles. The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles – some of them the same models – but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago. The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents. A further 112k Corvette models from the 2005-2007 model years are being called in for problems with their low-beam headlamps resulting from a flexing relay control circuit wire that's not meant to bend. GM says it is "aware of several hundred complaints" about this issue, but notes that there have been no reports of related accidents. In addition, over 19k examples of Cadillac CTS from the 2013 and 2014 model years are being recalled over windshield wipers that might not work after a jump start. Finally, GM is also bringing in 477 examples of its 2014 Chevy Silverado, Tahoe and GMC Sierra (though not the Yukon) to fix a problem with a tie rod in its steering rack. As ever, all recall repairs will be performed free of charge, and GM is now estimating that recall-related actions this quarter will result in an estimated $200-million charge against its second-quarter earnings. Read the full announcement from GM below for further details.

Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.

Autoblog's Editors' Picks: Our complete list of the best new vehicles

Mon, May 13 2024

It's not easy to earn an “EditorsÂ’ Picks” at Autoblog as part of the rating and review process that every new vehicle goes through. Our editors have been at it a long time, which means weÂ’ve driven and reviewed virtually every new car you can go buy on the dealer lot. There are disagreements, of course, and all vehicles have their strengths and weaknesses, but this list features what we think are the best new vehicles chosen by Autoblog editors. We started this formal review process back in 2018, so there's quite of few of them now. So what does it mean to be an EditorsÂ’ Pick? In short, it means itÂ’s a car that we can highly recommend purchasing. There may be one, multiple, or even zero vehicles in any given segment that we give the green light to. What really matters is that itÂ’s a vehicle that weÂ’d tell a friend or family member to go buy if theyÂ’re considering it, because itÂ’s a very good car. The best way to use this list is is with the navigation links below. Click on a segment, and you'll quickly arrive at the top rated pickup truck or SUV, for example. Use the back button to return to these links and search in another segment, like sedans. If youÂ’ve been keeping up with our monthly series of the latest vehicles to earn EditorsÂ’ Pick status, youÂ’re likely going to be familiar with this list already. If not, welcome to the complete list that weÂ’ll be keeping updated as vehicles enter (and others perhaps exit) the good graces of our editorial team. We rate a new car — giving it a numerical score out of 10 — every time thereÂ’s a significant refresh or if it happens to be an all-new model. Any given vehicle may be impressive on a first drive, but we wait until itÂ’s in the hands of our editors to put it through the same type of testing as every other vehicle that rolls through our test fleet before giving it the EditorsÂ’ Pick badge. This ensures consistency and allows more voices to be heard on each individual model. And just so you donÂ’t think weÂ’ve skipped trims or variants of a model, we hand out the EditorsÂ’ Pick based on the overarching model to keep things consistent. So, when you read that the 3 Series is an EditorsÂ’ Pick, yes, that includes the 330i to the M3 and all the variants in between. If thereÂ’s a particular version of that car we vehemently disagree with, we make sure to call that out.
