Every once in a while a car comes along with a special story that truly makes it a one-of-a-kind vehicle.  This is one of those cars.  This 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop was sold new at my dealership in 1955.  It was traded in by the original owners at my dealership in 2000.  The best part is that the same salesman who sold the car in 1955, took the car in trade 45 years later and sold his customer a new 2000 Impala.  He was in his thirty's when he sold the car in 1955 and in his late seventy's when he took it back in trade.  Back in 55' the salesman's father and older brother owned the dealership and this car was sold to his baby sister.  She and her husband took the car on their honeymoon and kept it for the next 45 years.  Fast forward to 2000 and my elderly salesman Bill asks me if I want take a 1955 Bel Air in trade on a new Impala.  Of course I say yes, and he makes the deal with his sister.  I personally travelled to Salt Lake City with a trailer and picked up the Bel Air at the owners home and brought it back to the dealership where we began a complete restoration.  I will let the attached photos tell most of the story, but in short the following major items were done:

  1. The original 265 4V Powerpack V8 was completely rebuilt in my shop by a certified GM mechanic.
  2. The original cast iron two speed Powerglide transmission was completely rebuilt in my shop by the same mechanic.
  3. The original rear differential was completely rebuilt by the same mechanic.
  4. The original 4 barrel carburator was rebuilt by the same mechanic.
  5. All rusted body panels were replaced and the car was painted in my body shop.
  6. The interior was replaced with Danchuck materials.
  7. The clock and radio were repaired and are currently working properly.
  8. All other mechanical components were rebuilt or replaced.

I had planned on keeping this car for the rest of my life and keeping on display at my dealership.  Then came the bankruptcy of GM, and my Chevrolet franchise was taken from me.  Now looking at the car reminds me of the loss of a Chevrolet dealership that had been in continuous operation in the same location since 1936.  It's time for someone else to own this vehicle who can enjoy it like I once did.

Jay Leno gets pulled over while roaring in a Corvette Z06 convertible

Tue, Jan 6 2015

No one is above the law, even if that person is a certain silver-haired auto enthusiast with a popular weekly video series about the cars in his garage. This week, Jay Leno experiences the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06, but he also gets to have a meeting with some of California's Finest immediately after a high-speed blast. As opposed to the full-bore Z06 coupe with the seven-speed manual, Leno gets behind the wheel of the slightly heavier convertible version with the eight-speed auto. Being a droptop doesn't bother him too much, but Leno makes it obvious he wishes that he could be shifting for himself. Even if the auto is technically quicker, Leno says that swapping gears gives him something to do while driving. Of course, one of the major advantages of the convertible is the ability to listen to the Z06's thumping V8 unimpeded. With 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque from 6.2-liters of supercharged muscle, it already puts down impressive numbers, but the sound might just be the best part of all. Around town, the 'Vette is quiet enough to easily blend in with the rest of traffic. However, tip the throttle down and the valves in the exhaust open up to turn the engine into roaring monster. Be careful where you make this thing howl, though, because it's pretty easy for the police to take notice. The host finds that out the hard way in this week's episode of Jay Leno's Garage. Recharge Wrap-up: Chevy Volt class action suit proposed, Tesla stock could outperform in 2015

Sat, Dec 27 2014

A class action suit has been proposed against General Motors for a steering problem in the Chevrolet Volt. The plaintiffs claim that a defect can cause the steering to freeze intermittently, and that General Motors either knows or should have known about the problem. The case, filed in New Jersey, also claims that defective parts are replaced with the same or similar parts, which are also defective. The plaintiffs say that claims for the 100-plus-member class exceed $5 million. Read more at Law360 or at BigClassAction. Tesla Motors stock (TSLA) has risen after weeks of losses. It gained 5.4 percent during the week ending December 19, when it closed at $219.29 per share. Since then, it rose slightly more, closing at $222.26 on December 24. Morgan Stanley lowered its target price on Tesla stock from $320 to $290, predicting lower sales on the upcoming Model III than expected before, but still called Tesla a good long-term investment. Analysts at CNBC predicted Tesla to be the best performing stock of 2015. Read more at ETF Daily News. Oslo- and New York-based architecture firm Snohetta has designed a zero-emissions house that also charges an electric car. The ZEB Pilot House, built in Larvik, Norway, uses a solar panel on the roof to power the house, which also provides enough excess energy to charge an EV. To make the most of energy most efficiently, the house uses smart technology to use as much energy as it can once it's harvested. This means one can turn on appliances like the washing machine remotely while the sun is at the optimum angle in the sky - perhaps during mid-day when the residents are at work. The house also uses organic materials and is designed to save as much energy as possible. Read more at Wired.
