Up for sale is a strong running 1999 Chevy Tahoe LS 4x4 Police / Fire edition.  I bought this car in September of 2007 directly from the Huntington, NY Fire Department.  It was the Fire Chief's vehicle and they had kept it longer than they normally keep vehicles because they felt that it was more "truck-like" as compared to the newer Tahoes and did a better job hauling, etc.  They removed the light bars, radios, and other equipment and put silicone in on the roof where the light bar was held on.  You can see in the pics that the silicone is still there and there is a small ding that has rusted where the bar dug into the roof.  However, the Tahoe was maintained without fail by the Fire Dept and it has served me without fail ever since as my utility / 3rd vehicle.  The Police/Fire editions solve many of the problems the regular Tahoes have.  It has better brakes, a slightly hotter tune, dual batteries, a different grille, and a rubber floor.  Right now the car has 124, 286 miles but I will likely drive it between now and you taking delivery.  Before you get it, I'll rotate & balance the tires and do the 125,000 mile oil change for you.  I'll also include all 4 volumes of the factory shop manual which will help you troubleshoot any issues and take any maintenance action required.  I paid about $150 for the set. Here's the details of the car as I know them:

Paint/Body: The paint job is very good overall, as you can see in the photos.  In the hot rod world it'd be a solid 5-10 footer as you don't notice the flaws until you get up close.  Both the Fire Dept and I have kept it waxed regularly throughout its life.  But it does have some scratches, water spots, and wear that you would expect.  The car is accident free.  It still has in the working spotlight (but it doesn't turn with the handle inside the cockpit - you have to do it by hand), front marker lights, and a reflective strip around the outside that makes you very visible at night.  The rubber trim on the left rear quarter fell off.  I still have it if you want it but it didn't serve any purpose beyond cosmetic so I left it off.  There's a ding on the passage door and the driver's door is dinged where someone tried to break into the car.  There's a long scratch on the hood along with some paint missing in one spot (see pics). There's also a dent/crease above the right rear wheelwell with some white paint left behind as part of the lovely parking lot generosity you get in the DC area.  I already mentioned the roof.   The headlights were replaced within the last 6 months with the brightest units I could buy, and the rear 3rd brake light is an LED unit that's only 2 years old.  There is a tow hitch with standard wiring.

Tires/Brakes:  The tires have plenty of wear - more than 50% life left.    There's some irregular wear (problem has been fixed) on the fronts but they'll be going to the rear.  See pics.  The front brakes are drilled/slotted rotors with ceramic pads that have half or better life to them.  The rear shoes were replaced about 20k miles ago.  I upgraded the lines to stainless steel.

Transmission / Driveline:  It has the automatic 2-speed transfer case.  The transfer case was completely rebuilt at 105k, and works as it should.  It was service at 120k with the transmission (DEXRON VI fluid complete flush & filter change).  There are no issues with functionality.  The front end was rebuilt at 105k (I used it as a daily driver from 105k-115k) with all new ball joints and polyurethane bushings.  The car handles better than factory.  All 4 shocks were also replaced at the same time.

Engine: Full synthetic oil ever 5k miles as prescribed.  The only flaw is that the belt squeals a little bit after a soaking rain.  There must be a slight leak in the hood seal.  The engine has plenty of power.  I have averaged 15-16 mpg  with mixed driving on 2 Hi.   It does not use or leak any oil.  I replaced all O2 sensors at 110k.  2 New Duralast Gold batteries at 95k miles.

Accessories/Interior:  Power doors, power windows, cruise control, heat, and A./C all work. The rear defroster has a few bars gone from the window.  The driver's power seat works.  There are no rips or tears in the seats.  The floor is rubber.  There are some stains in the rear and places where the plastic trim has cracked around the barn doors - this was a utility vehicle to me.  The dash has no cracks.   The gas gauge has a little vibration to the needle but indicates properly.  The seat belt idiot light intermittently comes on even when you're belted.  I haven't replaced the sensor in the buckle yet.  There are two switches left over from its Fire days in the dash.   I have a junkyard center console (not anchored down) in the middle of the two front seats.  The AM/FM cassette radio works but the speakers and reception can be staticky/intermittent at times.

Any questions - please ask.  This truck is beefcake.  It will serve you well.  It has been regularly and well maintained.  I am very particular with my vehicles and have tried to disclose to you everything I knew about its condition.  I could've said, "runs good, some wear and tear," but I'd rather you felt more confident about what you were getting into.  I would trust it to drive from MD to CA pulling a 6500lb trailer across the Rockies tomorrow.

My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry

Wed, Dec 1 2021

The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer.  The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).

Stop-start standard in four-cylinder 2015 Chevrolet Impala

Fri, May 23 2014

Chevrolet has announced that it will include stop-start technology as standard in the entry level 2015 Impala. The result is a nearly five-percent improvement in city fuel economy, also known as one mile per gallon, up to 25 mpg, combined. The 3.6-liter V-6 Impala will not feature stop-start. The 2015 Impala comes equipped with Chevrolet's 2.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine, which will also offer 22 mpg in the city, and 31 on the highway. The 3.6-liter V-6 Impala will not feature stop-start and the mild-hybrid eAssist model from the 2014 MY, which got 29/25/35 combined/city/highway mpg, has been discontinued. Chevrolet spokesman Chad Lyons told Green Car Reports that not even one percent of the 2014 Impalas purchased were the Eco model. So Chevy is trying something different. With a seamless driving experience in mind, the new Impala's stop-start tech features software that governs under what conditions the feature will activate. The engine won't shut off if the car has not reached a speed of six miles per hour, so the start-stop won't be cycling during traffic jams. It can also fire the starter even if the engine has not come to a full stop, which quickens reaction time, particularly in instances of what Chevrolet calls "change-of-mind events." The stop-start function uses information about cabin temperature and humidity as well as battery charge to help determine whether or not to shut off the engine. The 2015 Impala has been engineered to reduce NVH, which will also help create a smoother stop-start experience for occupants, Chevy says. Motor mounts have been updated, and a burlier starter motor will help restart the engine after a stop. The Impala follows the 2014 Malibu as Chevrolet's second vehicle to feature stop-start tech. The four-cylinder model currently makes up over 30 percent of Impala sales. The 2015 Impala will be available beginning this summer, with a base MSRP of $27,735 (including destination charges). And while one MPG isn't a huge difference, neither is the price increase of just $50 for a bit of eco-minded innovation. Read on for more details in the press release below. Chevrolet Makes Stop/Start Standard in 2015 Impala Technology improves city fuel economy by 5 percent 2014-05-22 DETROIT – Stop/start technology will be standard on the 2015 Impala base 2.5-liter ECOTEC® engine, an addition that improves the vehicle's city fuel economy by nearly 5 percent, or one mile per gallon.

This is how GM is hiding new Chevy Volt in public

Wed, Oct 1 2014

General Motors is letting the public know that, well, it's not about to let the public know anything else about the next-generation Chevrolet Volt. But the automaker is willing to talk about its camouflaging process for upcoming versions of the extended-range plug-in. So it's a half-hearted secret, at best. GM actually has a "camouflage engineer" charged with creating ways to disguise the styling of new vehicles. In the Volt's case, the company is applying black and white swirly color patterns on top of the materials, such as plastics, vinyl and foam, that are used liberally across the body. It's all part of a teaser campaign that started last month with pictures of part the 2016 Volt. Earlier this month, GM said it was keeping track of Volt drivers' habits as it works on the next-gen model. The company noted that more than four out of five trips are being made in all-electric driving mode, and that 60 percent of Volt owners use a plain-old 100-volt outlet to recharge their cars. The car is slated to make its global debut at Detroit's North American International Auto Show next January, and the early word is that performance and all-electric range will be improved (we should hope so). The car will also be sleeker. By how much, we can't tell yet, because of those darn swirly patterns. GM's got more non-details in its press release below. Engineers charged with hiding styling while vehicle testing proceeds in public DETROIT – The styling of the next-generation Chevrolet Volt is one of the automotive world's best-kept secrets. Keeping customers and media eager to see the successor to the groundbreaking original at bay until the new Volt debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January is tricky business. First, it is engineers, not designers, who are charged with creating camouflage that balances styling secrecy with the need to validate the Volt and its systems in public. "If it were up to me it would be a shoebox driving down the road," said Lionel Perkins, GM camouflage engineer. "The design team wants us to cover more of the vehicle and the engineering team needs to have enough of the vehicle's weight and aero exposed so that the tests in the development process are consistent with the product that will come to market." The engineers responsible for the "cool" designs covering the car might deserve style points but their efforts are intended strictly to hide the metal beneath.
