Custom BuiltStillen GTS 3/4 Ton 4X4 Suburban

This 1998 3/4 ton 4X4 Suburban was purchased new and then taken to Steve Millen Motor Sports where it was completely built by hand from start to finish. Originally, the cost of this conversion, not including the purchase price of the new 1998 3/4 4X4 Suburban, was 49,800.49. A complete makeover was performed in July 2003 at an additional cost of $17,200.00.  That brings the total dollar amount of just the modifications performed on the Suburban to $67,000.00. This does not even take into consideration the original purchase price.  With the cost of the original Suburban taken into consideration, this is a $100,000 vehicle.  I have all of the receipts, if you want copies of those, send me an email at foxorama@aol.com and I can send them to you, they are in .pdf format so I couldn't attach them to the listing.  The fluids have been changed with Red line and Amsoil in the Engine and Supercharger every 3,000 miles.

With this option, we removed all of the seats, carpets, and interior panels, including the door panels. The entire floor and firewall areas are then covered with aerospace-quality soundproofing material. In the critical door and tailgate cavity areas, we use a double-thick layer of sound insulating material. The finished result is an interior that is quieter by 6-7 decibels, adding a dimension of refinement befitting a premium vehicle. The quieter interior enhances the performance of the audio/videosystem, making music and movie scores more vibrant

and full than ever.

13.  Completely re-engineered and re-upholstered GTS seating begins with the existing seats front and back being stripped to the frames. From there we begin to re-pad and foam with 3 different densities of foam all of the above mentioned seats and panels, which were then recovered in Leather and Ostrich skin. Both driver and passenger seats are electrically controlled and both include seat heaters.

16.  DWD2 Air Conditioning Evaporator Sanitizer system.  I have an extra recharge system for the DWD2 Sanitizer as well.

17.  Custom made Trash Container built into the console with removable trash bag.

18.  Front and Rear Air Conditioning, new A/C pump.

I am the third owner, as far as I can tell.  I purchased the vehicle from a car collector in Portland who bought it for his wife.  He purchased it from a specialty car shop in California, which I believe was listing it for the original owner.  The person I bought it from then shipped it back to Steve Millen Motorsports in Costa Mesa and had another $17,000 in upgrades put in it before shipping it back to his home in Portland.  Then, his wife decided she wanted something more "refined" so he put it up for sale on EBay, where I bought it for around $30,000.

This is an excellent running vehicle, never a hiccup.  It literally has over a ton of soundproofing in it, so it is SOLID and heavy.  Never been in an accident.  Also very sedate and smooth until you put your foot in it.  It's definitely got that cool supercharger "whine" when you step on it!!  I used this Suburban to transport my family 4 kids and my 24 foot Malibu Wakesetter for a number of years.  I used it primarily for family trips.  Now, the kids are grown and moved out, the Malibu has been sold, and I have no need for this Suburban.  We have never taken the time to sell it because we have always had a place to store it and we just never thought we would get our money out of it, but it's been taking up room and we haven't used it for quite awhile.  As much as we love it, it's time for it to go.  This vehicle has been garaged since new and never driven in the snow.  I have not driven this vehicle for more than 10,000 miles since I purchased it for $30,000 ten years ago.

There is a small oil leak down low on the motor, barely noticeable, definitely not worth taking the time to fix, it has left a spot on the garage floor about the size of a quarter over the whole time I had it in storage.  Also, I did have the supercharger rebuilt by Whipple around 8 years/3,000 miles ago.  It started making some noises and I decided to send it in for a complete rebuild.  I also replaced the water pump around that time.  Just recently we had it smogged and at that time the air conditioner was not blowing cold so I had a brand new air conditioner pump put in.

If I were to keep this vehicle and use it for really heavy towing, I would invest in an intercooler as the biggest limitation to the motor is the amount of heat that is generated in the supercharger.  You have to keep an eye on the exhaust temp when pulling a heavy load.  Never a problem with normal driving.

This really is an exceptional vehicle, I am selling it for a SMALL fraction of what has been invested in it.

Vehicle does not have any warranty, nor am I offering any guarantees.  I would encourage you to have it checked out by an independent mechanic if you have any doubt about it.  I am confident that anyone who inpsects it will tell you that it is in exceptional condition and has no issues, mechanical or otherwise.

Contact me via email if you would like to see it in person, leave me a number where I can call you back.  I travel quite a bit so I may have my wife or son show it to you.

Just renewed the California registration, it's good for more than a year.

I am willing to deliver the vehicle within a 500 mile radius of Bakersfield, CA for no additional charge, otherwise if you want to have it shipped you will need to arrange and pay for the shipping.  You are also welcome to come and pick it up in Bakersfield.

I would prefer payment via wire transfer, if you must use a cashier's check it will have to completely clear at my bank before I will release the vehicle.  Of course cash is always welcome.

I may be interested in a trade for a small tractor with backhoe, or possibly a '67 or '68 Mustang fastback in good condition.

Surprise! GM putting aluminum in next-gen pickups

Wed, Aug 5 2015

Last month, General Motors launched a series of ads touting the benefits of steel over aluminum – specifically, with regard to the Chevy Silverado versus the Ford F-150. (Kind of. We're not sure what a grizzly bear has to do with anything.) We took issue with the ads, with editor in chief Mike Austin saying they "reek of insecurity, and distract from the Silverado's strengths that could be used for positive advertising." But what bothers us more, is that yet another report surfaced claiming anti-aluminum GM will indeed use the weight-saving material in its next-generation fullsize trucks. On Tuesday, GM announced a $877-million investment for its truck plant in Flint, MI. But Reuters says that huge overhaul is because the trucks will use "substantially different equipment than the tools GM uses today." The report specifically states, "People familiar with the company's plans say GM's next-generation pickups and SUVs will make use of various materials, including aluminum and lightweight steel, to shed weight and gain fuel efficiency to meet tougher federal standards." The Silverado already uses a few aluminum components in the engine and hood, and if more widespread use will help GM build its best fullsize trucks ever, then that's great. Honestly, we have no reason to doubt that aluminum will be used in the next Silverado and GMC Sierra. We just hope GM remembers that nothing is ever truly deleted from the bowels of the Internet when it launches the subsequent "look how great aluminum is!" campaign. Texas sues GM, saying it tricked customers into sharing driving data sold to insurers

Wed, Aug 14 2024

Texas filed a lawsuit Tuesday against GM over years of alleged abuse of customers' data and trust. New car owners were presented with a "confusing and highly misleading" process that was implied to be for their safety, but "was no more than a deceptively designed sales flow" that surrendered their data for GM to sell. The suit contends that at no point was selling driving data ever even suggested as a possibility, putting GM in violation of the state's consumer protection laws. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is seeking a jury trial and at least $10,000 per offense (every GM car sold in the state since 2015) and a hefty add-on of $250,000 in cases where the victim was over 65. Texas seems to be flying high after a recent $1.4 billion settlement from Meta over other privacy concerns. This may well be a way to solve any pending budgetary issues in the Lone Star State.

Chevy Volt replacement battery cost varies wildly, up to $34,000

Fri, Jan 10 2014

There's a growing hubbub in the plug-in vehicle community over what looks like some ridiculously cheap replacement batteries for the Chevrolet Volt going up for sale. GM Parts Online, for example, is selling a replacement Volt battery with an MSRP of $2,994.64 but, with an online discount, the price comes down to $2,305.88. For the 16-kWh pack in the 2012 Volt, that comes to a very low $144.11 per kilowatt hour (kWH). But is it a real deal? How can it be, when a Chevy dealer may quote you a price of up to $34,000 to replace the pack? For a 16-kWh Volt pack, $2,305.88 comes to a very low $144.11 per kWh. But is it a real deal? Battery packs in alternative propulsion vehicles are usually priced by the kWh and, historically, they've been thought to be in the range of $500-per-kWh for OEM offerings. Since automakers are understandably secretive about their costs, we still don't know what the real number is today, but we do know it varies by automaker. Tesla, for example, has said it pays less than $200-per-kWH at the cell level but, of course, a constructed pack would be more. Whatever is going on, li-ion battery prices are trending downward. So, $144.11 certainly sounds great, but what's the story here? Kevin Kelly, manager of electrification technology communications for General Motors, reminded AutoblogGreen that GM Parts Online is not the official GM parts website and that, "the costs indicated on the site are not what we would charge our dealers or owners for a replacement battery. There would be no cost to the Volt owner if their battery needs replacement or repair while the battery is under the eight year/100,000 mile limited warranty coverage provided by Chevrolet." A single price tag also can't be accurate for everyone, Kelly said. "If the customer needs to have their battery repaired beyond the warranty, the cost to them would vary depending on what needs to be replaced or repaired (i.e. number of modules, which specific internal components need replacement, etc.)." he said. "So, it's hard for us to tell you exactly what the cost would be to the customer because it varies depending on what might need to be repaired/replaced. As a result, the core charge would vary." But, is the $2,300 price even accurate for anyone? Thanks to a reader comment, we see that this similar item on New GM Parts makes it look like the lithium-ion modules that Kelly mentioned – where a lot of the expensive bits are – are not included.
