This auction is for my 1989 Suburban that we affectionately call "Big Blue". I have put lots of money and time in this essentially rust-free Texas truck over the last couple of years to make it work great both on and off road and for camping. Basically, the entire drivetrain and chassis have been rebuilt. Here's the rundown.

Engine: Strong 454 BBC with Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, ceramic coated Sanderson headers, Pro-Systems 780 carb, GM aftermarket serpentine belt system, high volume Moroso oil pan, roller tip rockers and more. New 4-core aluminum radiator with dual electric fans, controlled by an adjustable temp switch.

Trans and T-case: 700r4 trans, rebuilt last winter with corvette servo and upgraded clutches...shifts firm but not hard. Converter locks up via switch on the dash and unlocks when you apply the brakes. T-case is the original NP241 that was also rebuilt last winter.

Axles: Rear is Corp 14-bolt and the front is a Dana 60, both of which came out of a 1 ton Chevy military truck. Both were completely rebuilt by Drive Train Specialists (DTS) and the gears were swapped to 4:88's. Disc brakes were added to the Dana 60, so there is new disc brakes and stainless brainless lines on all 4 corners. A new rear driveshaft was also added. In case you haven't priced these axles and the cost of rebuilding them, I can tell you that you don't want to have to...and with this truck it's already done.

Wheels and Tires - New 35" BFG AT T/A's on vintage 16.5 x 8" Western turbine wheels that were cleaned up and the spokes polished.

Lift: I got the truck with a 6" Skyjacker soft-ride lift. During the axle swap we used pinion wedges to get the right pinion angle and get rid of the rear-down stance these rigs are known for. All of the shocks have been upgraded as well to the newer version of the Skyjacker shocks.

Extras: I had a professionally race car shop bend up the step bars you can see in the pictures, but they are way more than just step bars. They are bolted to the frame and then an x-brace was made to tie the bars together. It really stiffens up the chassis and they look fantastic.  I also had a safari rack fabbed up that is not currently on the truck, but available to the buyer. I installed an inverter in the back of the truck and also installed a fan to make the rear a comfortable sleeping area. In addition, there are screens for the rear passenger doors so that you can leave the windows down without getting invaded by bugs. To keep up with the power demands, Big Blue has twin Optima yellow-top batteries. You can tow with the truck as well, with a hitch and trailer brakes.

Body and Interior: The body is in great shape with very few blemishes. Floors, rockers, doors, etc are rock solid. The paint is about 10yrs old and still shines up very nicely as you can see in the pics. Came with front and rear A/C, but it is currently disconnected. Heat works great. Power windows and locks. The interior was done by the same folks that do conversion van interiors when the truck was new. It's clean, rip free, cushy and perfectly functional, but shows some wear as you would expect for a truck that's 25 years old.  The dash pad was cracked so I glued down a plastic molded cover in the correct color.

Sorry for the long listing, but I have a lot of pride in this truck and the work and products that went into it. It's not a thrown together pile of parts. It's reliable and functional and a whole lotta fun, but has not been beaten offroad.   The only offroad adventures have been at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes here in Michigan, where it conquered all of the hills without breaking a sweat!!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Pat 616-304-ninety-three-thirty-seven

Burt Reynolds' movie re-creations fetch $379,500 in Vegas

Wed, Oct 3 2018

The recent death of Hollywood legend and automotive enthusiast Burt Reynolds helped drive up the value of four of his former cars from the 1970s and '80s, which sold last weekend at Barrett-Jackson's Las Vegas auction for a combined $379,500. Reynolds, who died Sept. 6 at age 82, had offered three Pontiac Trans Ams — two of them re-creations of the cars he drove in "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Hooper" and the third from 1984 used to promote his United States Football League team, the Tampa Bay Bandits. The fourth was a 1978 Chevrolet R30 pickup truck, styled like the one featured in "Cannonball Run." The "Bandit" re-creation, a 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that Reynolds ordered to be as "movie-correct" as possible but featuring a custom-built 200-4R automatic transmission, sold for $192,500. The car features a freshly built Pontiac 400 cubic-inch V8 mated to a four-speed automatic and featuring all-new Butler Performance parts and air-conditioning components. Reynolds reportedly said this was his favorite car from his films, and it even came with an authentic movie-correct CB radio and CB antenna. The red retro-rocket "Hooper" '78 Firebird, with a 403 cubic-inch V8 and a three-speed automatic, hammered for $88,000. By comparison, a gold 1978 Trans Am also offered at the Las Vegas auction but not connected to Reynolds fetched $27,500. The 1987 Chevy R30 pickup was a re-creation of the Indy Hauler pace truck seen jumping over a moving freight train in "Cannonball Run." It hammered for $49,500. The fourth car never appeared in any of Reynolds' films but is instead the only surviving example of two Trans Ams used to promote the Tampa Bay Bandits of the now-defunct USFL, having been driven out onto the field by Reynolds and his late friend and co-star, Jerry Reed, during opening day one season. It also sold for $49,500. At the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in 2016, Reynolds accompanied a 1977 Trans Am used to promote "Bandit" onto the auction block. That car sold for $550,000. EcoCar2 is on the hunt for a better, cleaner Chevy Malibu [w/video]

Thu, Jun 12 2014

The students spent three years transforming an ordinary Chevy Malibu into a revolutionary vehicle. Not far from the building where General Motors once invented the Chevy Volt, a dozen or so college students are standing on the blacktop alongside a test track, watching a professional driver push the limits of a plug-in hybrid car they've built that's far more radical. These students, from Colorado State University, have spent the past three years transforming an ordinary Chevy Malibu into a revolutionary vehicle. At first glance, it still looks like a regular sedan. But under the hood, they've installed a hybrid powertrain that contains both hydrogen and electric power sources. Even by the standards of the Department of Energy competition they're participating in, it's an outlier. That's exactly what they had in mind. "We didn't want to come here and tell them how to build a better Volt," said Tom Bradley, faculty adviser for the Colorado State team. "They already know how to do that. We can tell them how to think about these possibilities in a whole new way." After three years of work, it all comes down to this. The Colorado State team was one of 15 that came to GM's Milford Proving Grounds last week for the final stretch of the EcoCar2 competition, which challenges regular college students who have no automotive experience to do nothing less than reinvent the American car. The teams have come from across North America, and include schools like Ohio State and Virginia Tech that have a long history of participating in similar competitions, and schools like the University of Washington and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University that are here for the first time. After three years of work, it all comes down to this. The teams have operated 24 hours a day for almost two weeks here at the Proving Grounds, running a gamut of tests that include a 310-point safety inspection, emissions and energy-consumption tests and road tests, in which professional GM drivers ensure they're road worthy. The winning team will be announced tonight in Washington D.C. Revolutionary cars, ordinary package While other green-car competitions encourage extreme designs, this one comes with a somewhat constraining twist: Yes, students must improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, but in the end, they still have to have a car that would appeal to mainstream customers. In practical terms, that means they must keep conveniences like air conditioning and trunk space.

Watch this time-lapse build of the Chevy SS for NASCAR

Fri, 08 Feb 2013

There's only about a week left until we get our first look at the production version of the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan, but Chevrolet NASCAR teams have been looking at the race version of the car all winter. Autoweek has posted a really neat time-lapse video showing just a portion of what it takes to build one of NASCAR's new Gen6 stock cars.
Though the video is quite brief, it does show almost the entire build process starting with just the car's nose, and it gives us a good look at how integral the template is to the final product. As a bonus, Hendrick Motorsports also provided some videos showing two of its teams performing pit stop tests over the winter. The second video shows some of the more detailed aspects of the racecar's rear end, including the stock-looking trunk cutout and a newly mandated rear bumper extension that will be used on super speedways like Daytona and Talladega.
To see what Team Chevy has been up to all off-season, check out all three videos posted after the jump.
