Wayzata, Minnesota, United States
1956 Chevrolet 3200 Pickup Rat Rod Built in the Traditional-Style, She sits low with just the right stance, and drives excellent. Best of all, no airbags or switches to deal with. The truck is a 1956 Chevrolet 3200 long box. Most of the trucks you see are the shorter 3100's making this one pretty unique. It sat on a farm for almost 30 years before being rescued and brought back to life. Its been completely redone mechanically, but still wears the original patina acquired during its life on the farm. Built over a 1976 Chevrolet 2wd Suburban frame and running gear, it is the best combination of modern drive-line and classic patina! This Truck was Featured (Centerfold) in the very First Issue of Rat Rod Magazine May 2010
Here are some details of the build: The Frame was shortened 2' to fit the wheel wells of the 1956 body. It was then narrowed 6" in the front. The front suspension consists of 3" Drop Spindles, 2" Drop Coils, custom upper A arms, new shocks Power Steering with the tried and true Mustang II Rack and Pinion Freshly Rebuilt 454 Big Block The engine breathes through a new Holley 650, over the rail race headers, and straight 4" exhaust (4" exhaust/headers were recently updated and can be seen in the later photos) Turbo 400 Transmission with B&M Shift kit, and floor shifter 4 core radiator cooled by dual Flex Lite Electric Fans New Power brakes on all four corners w/ rebuilt master and power booster 12 Bolt rear end with 3:73 gears and spooled The back of the truck was lowered with new rear leafs, axle over the springs, and new shocks The entire firewall, cab floor, and bed floor was painstakingly custom fabricated out of steel diamond plate The interior was left to its original patina (in true rat rod fashion) Original Seat (looks uncomfortable, but it isn't) Original dash with a few upgrades: Tach and GPS. Original speedo works (off by about 15mph) Tilt steering column, wooden moto-lita steering wheel All the glass is original to the cab, and fits the Rat Rod look Rims are raw steel smoothies 15x6 front 15x7 rear. 205-75/15 wide white walls in the front, 235-75/15 wide white walls in the rear (currently sitting on vintage Goodyear GT tires in the rear, both sets included in the sale) She is a blast to drive, and was built right. The 454 moves her like a rocket down the road, and can smoke both rears for days. You can cruise down the highway at 60mph with two fingers on the wheel, thanks to the power steering. The power brakes stop this beast like a modern day ride. The build was completed in 2008 (exhaust was updated in 2013) Passed the NSRA strict Vehicle Safety Certification Inspection in 2010 The Truck has a clear Minnesota Title and is titled on the 1976 Chevy Chassis vin #CCS166Fl37768

Recharge Wrap-up: U of M wins Solar Challenge, family attempts record-breaking e-bike ride
Thu, Aug 14 2014The University of Michigan Solar Car Team has won the 2014 American Solar Challenge. It is the team's eighth national championship, its fifth in a row, and its first using Siemens' product lifecycle management (PLM) software. The race took place over 1,722 miles and seven days traveling across eight states. The team's car, called "Quantum," outpaced the nearest competitor by four hours. Looking forward, Michigan Solar Car Project Manager Pavan Naik says, "The switch to Siemens tools will give us the ability to model and simulate everything and truly allow us to optimize the performance of our new vehicle. As we start on our quest to win the World Solar Challenge in 2015, we'll be leveraging a full complement of PLM solutions." Read more in the press release below. The EcoCar3 competition, in which teams will convert Chevrolet Camaros into hybrid electric cars, begins in September. The various college teams will have four years to lessen the car's environmental impact as much as possible while maintaining performance and, of course, that cool Camaro design. EcoCar3, which is put on by the US Department of Energy and General Motors, kicks off with a workshop in Novi, Michigan from September 16 - 18. Read more at the DOE website at the dedicated EcoCar3 site or watch the announcement video at our previous post. Zap and Jonway Auto are shifting to a high rate of EV production. Zap already has two lines creating the Urbee EV to met demand, and is switching over a third to make electric minivans and SUVs. The company aims to produce 30,000 EVs by 2015 for the Chinese market. Zap says it has a backlog of 25,000 Urbee orders. Read more in the press release below. A family of four hopes to make a world record-breaking, 6,000-mile electric bike journey this fall. The family, which recently drove from Argentina to Montana in a pickup with a camper, will ride from Montana to Maine, then down the East Coast to Florida in an attempt to break the record for longest electric bicycle ride. They'll use two bikes. The Father, Thomas, will ride one of the bikes carrying one of the children, while the rest of the family rides in a support vehicle, with the mother, Dylan, riding the second bike when they can find others to drive. They have started a crowdfunding campaign for some of the equipment needed to document the trip. See the video below or read more at Treehugger.
GM recalls Chevy Express, GMC Savana over rollaway concern
Mon, 21 Jan 2013The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice for a small number of General Motors fullsize vans due to possible rollaway concerns. On certain 2013 Chevrolet Express and 2013 GMC Savana models, it is possible to remove the key from the ignition without the shifter being in park.
Only 980 total units are being affected by this recall, and GM is fixing the issue by replacing the ignition cylinder and associated keys. Affected Chevy vans were built during most of November and December while its GMC counterpart was only built for a week in November. The recall goes into effect on January 23, and to find out if your vehicle applies to the recall, the GM and NHTSA contact numbers can be found on the official recall notice, which is posted below.
1983 Motorweek showdown pits Porsche 928S vs. Chevy Camaro Z28
Mon, Jan 12 2015Last month, Motor Trend threw the Camaro Z/28 and Porsche 911 GT3 into the bear pit and let them fight it out. Way back in 1983, MotorWeek had the same idea, comparing the Camaro Z/28 to the Porsche 928S. At the time, the Camaro was America's best selling sports coupe, the 928S was Porsche's top-of-the-line model that also had the highest top speed of any car sold here. And the price differential was even more stark then: $13,600 for the Camaro, $45,000 for the Porsche. That put the Z/28's cast-iron, 5.0-liter V8 with 190 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque against the all-aluminum 4.7-liter V8 with 234 hp and 263 lb-ft in the 928S. Even with that and the Camaro being 14 inches longer than the Porsche, the American was a surprising 40 pounds lighter than the German. The show took them to Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia to see how close a relative performance bargain could hang with a the German GT. Both had five-speed manual transmissions, but the high-speed corners and tight sections of Summit Point would test other handling variables, including the "bone-rattling" Camaro's solid rear axle and disc and drum brake setup vis-a-vis the four-wheel disc brakes and independent suspension on the "firm-but-smooth" Porsche. Paradoxically, the larger disparity 22 years ago resulted in a closer result. Check out the video to see how the Summit was won.
