Quality features of the new six included overhead valves, cast-iron pistons, an efficient cooling system and a non pressurized engine lubrication system. The new six enabled Chevrolet to upgrade its one-ton to a 1 1/2-ton model. The 1 1/2-ton Utility LQ models were offered either with or without a cab, but as before no bodies were offered. The Series name for 1929 was changed to International which was the same as the 1929 autos. Maximum GVW rating was increased to 7,000 pounds from 6,000 pounds. The Utility truck's transmission was upgraded to a four-speed.
The new six-cylinder powered half-ton chassis cowl was designated the International Light Delivery Chassis with Cowl. The 107-inch wheelbase Light Delivery was rated for a maximum payload of 1,000 pounds. It was equipped with rear fenders and a spare rim for only $400 list. The sixes higher speeds allowed deliverymen and salesmen to make more stops per day The Independence Series of 1931 Chevrolet trucks were historically important in that this was the first year for a factory-built Chevrolet pickup and the 1 1/2-ton Utility trucks were offered in two wheelbases-- 131- and 157-inches--with single or dual rear wheels. A new Commercial chassis with open cab and pickup box cost only $440. The Commercial rode on a 109-inch wheelbase (108 9/16) up from 107-inches in 1930. Maximum GVW continued at 4,000 pounds. Chevrolet offered four Commercial bodies in 1931--pickup, panel, sedan delivery and canopy. The cab was redesigned with a one-piece steel roof, at last the former structure of wood and fabric was history. The cab was wider and the seats were also wider and more comfortable; the doors were considerably larger for easier entry and a rubber floor mat was furnished.

LG Chem's troubled Chevy Volt battery plant hiring once again
Thu, Sep 25 2014The Michigan battery plant known for paying its workers to do nothing has turned things around and is now hiring more workers, specifically to do something. South Korea-based LG Chem, which runs the factory to supply the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in vehicle with its lithium-ion batteries, held a job fair recently to bring on 40 new employees in order to meet higher battery demand, according to WZZM, the ABC affiliate for Grand Rapids, MI. The LG Chem factory is in Holland, MI, about 30 miles west of Grand Rapids, and it made its first batteries last year. Prior to that, though, the factory gained notoriety after a US Department of Energy (DOE) probe found that workers there were getting paid to do, well, nothing. That's because demand for the battery packs was so low that it cost less for the plant to sit idle. The DOE was conducting the probe because of its financial grant to LG Chem. But that was then and today is today. LG Chem is looking to ramp up production in advance of the second-generation Volt. That 2016 model-year version is said to have a longer all-electric range and better performance and will ride on a new chassis, but few official details have surfaced. We will know more when we get our first look at the car at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
GM recalling over 243,000 crossovers over possible seat belt defect

The summer of 2010's recall hit parade continues unabated today, with General Motors having just announced that it is asking 243,403 owners of its 2009-2010 Lambda crossovers to bring their three-row haulers in for inspection. The culprit? Second-row seat belts in select Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook CUVs have "failed to perform properly in a crash."
According to GM, a second-row seat-side trim piece is to blame, as it can impede the upward rotation of the buckle after the seat is folded flat. As a result, if the buckle makes contact with the seat frame, cosmetic damage can occur, potentially requiring additional force to operate the buckle properly. So far, no great shakes, but in the process of applying that additional force, the occupant may push the buckle cover down to the strap, potentially revealing and depressing the red release button. As a result of this, the belt may not latch, or in certain cases, it may actually appear to be latched when, in fact, it isn't.
GM Design shows what could have been and what might be
Thu, May 27 2021We periodically like to check in with GM Design's Instagram account to see what they're cooking up. Even better is when we catch a glimpse of an alternate history of what legendary designers from The General's past were thinking, though those ideas may not have made it into production. This week, for example, the account posted some illustrations from George Camp, whose career at GM spanned nearly four decades, from 1963 to 2001. One of the renderings is of what appears to be a 1971-72 Pontiac GTO Judge, but with two headlights instead of the production unit's quad beams. The rear departs from the canonical version most dramatically, with a massive integrated wing. Other bits that didn't make the production cut include large side vents, a gill-like side marker and rectangular intakes below the headlights that wouldn't be out of place on a modern design today. Amazingly, from what we can make out of the date, it appears that the drawing was done sometime in 1965, which makes it quite prescient. To our eyes it splits the difference between the 1986 Corvette Indy concept and a fourth-generation F-body Pontiac Firebird, so perhaps parts of Camp's work on this sketch did make it into physical form. There's also a radical sports car concept from May 1970 that resembles the Mazda RX-500 concept from the same year, a Syd Mead-looking Cadillac coupe, and an Oldsmobile with a cool take on the company's trademark waterfall grille and elements of the Colonnade Cutlass at the rear. Other recent posts include a FJ Cruiser-like off-road EV, a sleek coupe with the Chevy corporate grille, and a rendering of a Silverado-esque pickup that looks far better than the current production version.
