On July 20, 1967, William Ferrell strolled into Allen Green Chevrolet in Burien, Washington in search of a new car.  Mr. Ferrell was stationed at the nearby Fort Lewis for basic training and wanted to get a new car before he was shipped off to Vietnam.  With his checks from Uncle Sam burning a hole in his pockets, he searched the lot for the perfect ride.  He found what he was looking for in a brand new 1967 Bolero Red Nova Super Sport.  It had matching red interior and a black vinyl top.  When he popped the hood, it got even better.  It had the factory installed 327 rated at 275 horsepower backed up by a 4 speed transmission.  This car fit the bill perfectly and after some paperwork was signed, William was driving his new Nova back to the base.

To get his new car on the base, he was required to put a bumper sticker with his permit number on it. (it is still on the rear bumper) I also have the temporary permit from the dealer.  William ended up going to Vietnam and returned a year later to find his Nova just as he had left it.  With his duty to Uncle Sam fullfilled, he hopped in the Nova and drove it back to his home state of South Carolina where he and the car resided together until 2010.

When I bought the car, it was totally original. Unlike so many other Novas, this one was loved and not changed.  It still had its complete original drivetrain down to the original carburetor, starter, distributor, alternator, shifter, etc.  It showed just over 60,000 miles on the odometer and no doubt are actual miles.  When I got the car, it smoked a little  so I pulled the engine and replaced, rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, and had the heads professionaly gone through.  I replaced the original clutch and installed period correct bias white wall tires.  The body was near perfect wearing most of its original Bolero red laquer. The body had absolutely no rust and only a few dings and bruises.  There is no evidence of any major damage and it still retains both of its original T 3 headlights.  I replaced the original vinyl top just because it had dried out and cracked over the years.  I also removed the carpet and had it professionaly cleaned.  While taking the carpet out I found a build sheet showing the drivetrain and color options.  (see picture)  Also under the seat was a few pictures of the car and family members from the late 60,s.  When the carpet was out I could see where at one time the heater core had leaked and left a very small amount of rust on the passenger side floor board.  Really not significant enough to even mention.

When Mr. Ferrell bought the car, it not only had the best color combination and best drivetrain combination, it also had some pretty good factory options.  It came with the factory wood steering wheel, rear defroster, and front and rear bumper guards.

I have lovingly preserved this car and has been in my personal collection for years now.  I will be selling off a few of my cars in the next few weeks including a one owner 1964 Nova Super Sport, 283 with 4 speed and factory air conditioning and a 1964 GTO original California Black plate car that has had a frame off restoration.

GM finds steering flaw, decides it doesn't warrant a recall

Tue, Apr 14 2015

Guess what? General Motors is back in the spotlight for not recalling something. This time, though, not only does the company have an argument against a recall campaign, but its position is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to The New York Times, over 50 owners of GM vehicles have reported instances of stuck or seized steering after driving long distances without moving the wheel. One owner complained to NHTSA that the "locked" steering of their 2013 Buick Verano caused a collision with a concrete barrier in a construction zone. Along with the 2013 to 2014 model year Verano sedans, Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu sedans are also affected. Considering the popularity of those models, GM needs to have a reason for not issuing a recall, right? "Based on a very low rate of occurrence – ranging from less than one half to less than two incidents per thousand vehicles – and the fact that the condition is remedied when the wheel is turned, GM determined this was not a safety issue," spokesman Alan Adler told The Times. The company has, however, issued a technical service bulletin for owners that complain of the problem. The fix is nothing more than a software update that is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles from new. NHTSA cited GM's actions, along with descriptions of the problems from customers, in its decision not to issue a recall, with spokeswoman Catherine Howden saying, "the symptoms described would be a brief, perceptible change in steering feel that has little to no effect on the driver's ability to safely steer the vehicle." "When terms like 'notchy,' 'stick,' 'slip' or 'feel' are used, it does not indicate a meaningful increase in steering effort," Howden told The Times via email. What do you think? Is GM in the wrong here? Should there be a recall, or is the issue so limited as to not warrant one? Have your say in Comments. GM, Pilot will build EVgo fast chargers at 500 truck stops across U.S.

Thu, Jul 14 2022

All of our maps showing electric vehicle charging stations across the U.S. are going to need an update. Today, General Motors, Pilot and EVgo announced plans to work together on a nationwide DC fast charging network. The plan calls for 2,000 charging stalls that can deliver up to 350 kW to be installed at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers in the U.S. The goal is to have DC fast chargers available in 50-mile intervals across the country. The new charging stations will feature GM's "Ultium Charge 360" branding and "Pilot Flying J" logos but will not be limited to drivers of GM EVs. The plugs will use CCS connectors and be available to anyone. GM EV owners can take advantage of benefits, including the ability to make exclusive reservations, get discounts on charging costs and streamline the charging process with Plug and Charge and in-vehicle apps that can provide real-time charger availability. The first installation phase will take place in 2023, and "the bulk of the installations" should be completed by 2025, EVgo CEO Kathy Zoi said during a conference call with reporters announcing the plan. "We're gonna get going immediately and commence all of that engineering and planning stuff," she said. "We've got a pretty orderly plan." Pilot CEO Shameek Konar said the company expects the new EV charging stations to coexist with the current fuel infrastructure. "An average Pilot Flying J location is about 10 acres," Konar said. "This will be in addition to all of our gas pumps. The way I think about it is, this is a new source of energy that is going to coexist with gas for quite some time. We can debate how long, but we need to serve both groups of customers." Installing DC fast chargers at hundreds of Pilot's travel centers — aka truck stops — means there should be food, drinks, restrooms, WiFi and even showers available while you wait for an EV to charge. Pilot recently announced its “New Horizons” plan that will invest $1 billion in upgrading Pilot travel centers with more premium amenities, including expanded seating and lounge areas. While the exact amount of time it will take to charge an EV using these new stations will vary on the EV and its current state of charge, most EVs can refill from a low state of charge to around 80 percent in 20-30 minutes on a fast charger. The new stations are future-proofed to deliver up to 350 kW, a charge rate that few EVs today can handle.

The Volt Dance had precedent; meet the Chevy Footlockers

Sun, Dec 14 2014

Marketing in the auto industry can get weird sometimes – really quite bizarre, in fact. For example, remember the Chevy Volt dance from the 2009 Los Angles Auto Show? If not, a group boogied to a song about the electric car, and it was every bit as awkward (and hilarious) as that sounds. In fact, that innocent bit of promotion lives in infamy, as some pundits grabbed hold of it during General Motors' bailout and asked why America's tax dollars were going to such things. The Chicago Auto Show has been digging through its vault of vintage videos, and it has come up with something that might actually be worse than that Volt-themed routine. They're called the Chevy Footlockers, and they're a dance troupe somehow promoting the Cavalier at the 1988 Chicago show. The connection between the car and their routine is unclear, but it's gloriously cheesy in a Chippendales-meets-AC Slater sort of way. Also, there are props towards the end, but we aren't going to spoil them for you, because you just have to watch for yourself. As a bonus, there's another (brief) clip below showing a female dance group with the Geo Tracker at the '91 Chicago show, and they sing, too. Scroll down to watch both of these oddities.
