The Monte Carlo SS was the Gentleman's Muscle Car. Available
with many luxury options and creature comforts, yet powered by the vaunted 454
Cu. In., 365 HP LS5 engine coupled to a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. It
was only offered for 2 years in the first generation, 1970 and 1971. Revived
again in 1983-1988 and 2000-2007, but never with the brute performance of the
first generation. The '70 and '71 Monte Carlo SS stand as the lone high
performance Chevrolet luxury cars of the
Muscle Car era. The SS 454 package would
be discontinued after 1971, but the 454 CID V8 engine would remain
optional in Monte Carlos through 1975.
The Monte Carlo endured six design generations. The first
four (1970–72, 1973–77, 1978–80 and 1981–88) were of a rear-wheel-drive,
V8-powered (V6 available beginning in 1978) coupe style, utilizing separate
body-on-frame construction. The later rear-wheel-drive generations bucked the trend
of unit-body construction, along with smaller engines, that became more
prevalent in the early 1980s as automakers downsized their vehicle lines to
meet increasing stringent fuel-economy regulations in the aftermath of two
energy crises that led to gasoline shortages and skyrocketing pump prices in
1973-74 and 1979-80. Despite those trends, the Monte Carlo remained one of the
most popular sellers in GM lineup history.
The Monte Carlo started as a Chevrolet counterpart to the
Pontiac Grand Prix, as conceived by Elliot "Pete" Estes, general
manager of Chevrolet, and Chevrolet's chief stylist, Dave Holls. Though the
Monte Carlo was developed at Chevrolet under the leadership of Pete Estes, it
was formally introduced in September, 1969 by John Z. DeLorean, who succeeded
Estes as Chevrolet's general manager earlier in the year after previously
heading the Pontiac division, where he led the development of the Grand Prix.
From 1972 until the cars end of production, the Monte Carlo
was also a solid success in NASCAR racing. The big (1973–1977) bodied cars were
the dominant body style through 1980. Again, starting in 1983 with the addition
of the SS nose, the Monte Carlo SS became the dominant body style in
NASCAR through the rest of the decade when the car went out of production. Finally,
the car came back to racing in 1995 when Chevy brought the car back into
production. The car brought Chevy
repeated NASCAR Manufacturers Cup awards until it again was discontinued from
production, and was replaced by the Impala for racing.

Not including the women and men who built it, the 2014 Chevrolet SS has only been seen in person by a piddling number of people - fewer humans than would fill the gymnasium at a high school volleyball game. Not including the men and women who built it, no one has driven it. Even so, it is already saddled with two controversies: the way it looks and the way it shifts. First to that shifting. Did we love the last Americanized Holden, the awesomely sportsome Pontiac G8 GXP, and its six-speed manual? Of course. Do we wish the SS came with a six-speed manual? Of course. But we'd like a toboggan to come with a manual transmission. We'd put a manual transmission on a weasel if we could because we're just wired that way; if it moves, it should come with a stick and a clutch. Or at least the option. Let's climb down off the ledge, though. We haven't driven the SS and we have no idea how good (or not) the automatic is. And the Hobson's Choice in transmissions when it comes to sport sedans like the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR-S and, oh yeah, cars-that-really-should-have-manuals like the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R and Porsche 918 and every single Lamborghini and Ferrari, for instance, hasn't stopped us from enjoying what is clearly the gruesome, dual-clutched demise of Western automotive civilization. Because in spite of our ululations at the dying of the six-speed light, we understand.

What Mother Earth devoured, Chevrolet plans to resurrect. The carmaker said Thursday it will oversee restoration of the classic cars swallowed by a huge sinkhole beneath the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky. General Motors Design in Warren, Mich., will manage the painstaking work to repair the eight prize vehicles, the automaker said Thursday. The cars were consumed when the earth opened up early Wednesday beneath a display area when the museum in Bowling Green, Ky., was closed. No injuries were reported. The museum was open Thursday except for the area where the sinkhole occurred. Mark Reuss, GM's head of global product development, said the damaged vehicles rank as "some of the most significant in automotive history." "There can only be one 1-millionth Corvette ever built," he said, referring to one of the damaged cars. "We want to ensure as many of the damaged cars are restored as possible so fans from around the world can enjoy them." Just how the cars will be pulled out of the ground remains to be seen, said museum executive director Wendell Strode. The local fire department estimated the hole is about 40 feet across and 25 to 30 feet deep. The hole opened beneath part of the museum's domed section. "We feel pretty confident that most of the cars can be extracted," Strode said Thursday. "And we hope and believe that with just a little bit of luck, that all eight cars can be extracted and be part of the restoration." Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran said some of the cars look to be in good shape, while others are buried in rubble. "It will likely be several weeks until we can get the cars out and assessed," he said. The GM Design team has helped restore other historic cars, but the Corvette project looks to be its biggest, he said. "These Corvettes are part of our history, and they want them restored properly," Strode said. "We're thrilled they're doing this." The cars looked like toys as they plunged into the hole, piled in a heap amid dirt and concrete fragments. The museum owns six of the cars while two - a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil - are on loan from General Motors. The other cars damaged were a 1962 black Corvette, a 1984 PPG Pace Car, a 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, a 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette and a 2009 white 1.5 Millionth Corvette. Pictures of the sinkhole showed a collapsed section of floor with multiple cars visible inside the hole.

There was plenty to talk about when General Motors hosted its annual mid-December holiday media reception a few months ago. GM had just decided to pull its global Chevrolet brand out of major European markets, where Chevys have competed directly with GM Europe Opel and Vauxhall vehicles, and the US government had sold its last remaining shares of GM stock. But most important was the company's just-reshuffled leadership. Post-bankruptcy CEO Dan Akerson had announced that he would step aside and that 52-year-old Mary Barra would replace him on January 15. Not only would she be the first woman to lead a major automaker, she would also be GM's first engineer CEO since Bob Stempel in the early 1990s. "I look at 2013 and 2014, as the retooling of General Motors" - Mark Reuss Replacing her as executive VP for global product development (and purchasing and supply chain) would be 49-year-old Mark Reuss, who had served a stellar four years as North American president, and elevated to corporate president (from executive VP and CFO) would be 42-year-old Dan Amman. All three are relatively young auto enthusiasts who are liked and respected inside and outside the company, and their collective talents and experience are highly complementary. I've interviewed Barra and found her smart, personable and knowledgeable, though she carefully walks the corporate line in speaking and answering questions. I met and chatted with Ammann for the first time at that holiday reception, and he made a good first impression. But I've known Reuss for some time as a genuinely good guy and a highly capable and inspiring leader, and I believe he is exactly the right person for the global product responsibility once famously held by the outspoken, oft-controversial Bob Lutz. So I jumped at an opportunity to join a group interview of Reuss (with mostly business reporters) at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It was an interesting session of mostly good questions, which he answered with refreshing candor and humor. "I look at 2013 and 2014, as the retooling of General Motors," Reuss said. "We've taken down almost every plant in North America, converted and turned it this last year, and to do that with award-winning vehicles and pretty flawless launches is key. We have to keep the train rolling on great product, because the rest won't happen without the best product, period." A reporter asked whether GM was pushing big trucks, SUVs and Corvettes again because gas is cheap. "No," Reuss said.
