Up for Auction or Buy It Now is a beautiful, completely restored 1962 Impala SS.  Restoration was completed in the Fall of 2011.  Since the restoration it has been driven less than 100 miles.  Engine, Transmission, wheels/tires, and all moving parts have less than 100 miles on them.  Maybe a half dozen times a year I take it around town just to keep everything fresh.  100% garaged.  I don’t believe it has seen rain.  I personally know every inch of this car as I worked on it every weekend for three years.

I have over 600 photos of the restoration.  If there’s something you’re looking for let me know.

SS built in Baltimore, sold in NC.  Clear VA title in hand.  It’s registered in CT, but CT only requires a bill of sale pre 1980, and if you give a title they will not return a CT title.  Please see CT DMV website to verify this for yourself.

Initially I was going to do a ground-up.  Upon disassembling, it was clear the frame, body, floor boards, etc. were in excellent shape, so I left the body intact.  The car was gutted, local sandblast, primed, painted (interior and exterior).  Nearly everything has been rebuilt or new.

Here’s the specifics:

Engine:  72 350, 4 bolt main.  New pistons, rings, camshaft, high volume oil pump, cam & crank bushings, Holly 650, full high end gasket set, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, double chain cam & crank sprocket.   Single point distributor has new points, otherwise original.  Chrome valve covers, dipstick & oil pan.   I have new Accel plug wires.   Alternator & starter original & untouched.  Had originally planned to bore .030 over, but there was very little wear on the motor itself, so it’s a standard rebuild with a mild cam – but nothing too fancy.  New motor mounts.  Exhaust manifolds have been sand blaster and painted with high temp paint, but looks like they need to be blasted again.  I believe the intake is from 1966 – it was also sandblasted, cleaned & high temp Chevy orange applied.

Transmission:  TH350 fully rebuilt locally w/ new torque convertor.  New aluminum transmission lines installed.  I have the original 1962 powerglide which you will receive as well.

Interior:  New carpet, seat foam inserts (buckets only, rear is OEM), Cars Inc. seat covers, custom door panels with the “SS” logo, headliner, coves, light fixtures, visors – basically all new items were designed to look like the original.  Everything was removed from the interior including the dash and was sand blaster, primed & painted.  Although the floor boards were in good shape, they were replaced & welded into place.  I have the chrome which goes around the buckets seats, but it’s not installed.  I had planned to get them re-chromed and never got around to doing it.  With the exception of the clock, all gages work.  All interior metal trim (not including what’s originally chrome, that was left alone) including dash has been sand blaster, primed and painted metallic black.  The center console has been painted to match the black metallic interior trim.

Exterior:  Color, metallic green, similar to Hunter green.  Four coats Dupont, four coats Euro clear coat.  I still have about a half-gallon left of both paint and clear (2 part) which I will send along.  There is very little body filler.  There are about two ounces in the driver’s quarter panel, and about six ounces in the drives door in the middle from a dent.  The front lip of the hood has a small amount also.  The body was in really nice, solid, shape before the rebuild, thus not a lot of filler was needed.  Frame was sand blasted (with body still attached) primed and undercoated.  All glass is believed to be original.  Front and rear bumpers are new aftermarket.  Dual exhaust sounds awesome, and have been welded together except where it meets up with the exhaust pipe.  New shocks, gas tank & sending unit.   Rear coves, back trunk panel, and SS machined swirl side molding are original and they have new hardware attaching them to the vehicle.  Has all new window fuzzies & door and window soft seals.  All exterior window and door chrome is original and in near mint shape except the top of the drives window itself (the chrome window frame).   Headlight assemblies completely disassembled, blasted, primed, painted & new plastic inserts & springs inserted.  Photos do not show headlight covers, but I have them and they’re in excellent original condition.  Headlights will need to be aligned.  New 17” American Racing & Michelin tires purchased from Tirerack, again with less than 100 miles on them.  35 degree SS antenna new aftermarket.  Trunk has a new pan welded and sealed and the entire trunk area sand blasted and primed NOT painted.  Brake drums are untouched.  Brake shoes are all new with new hardware.  Two brake master cylinders are rebuilt, two are new.  Front brake lines (from cylinder) are new, rear are original.

Engine Compartment/under the hood:  Fender wells and fire wall sand blasted, primed and painted metallic black.  Steering wheel assembly disassembled, cleaned &  greased.   New power steering hoses.  Power steering pump has been untouched.  Power steering piston has a very slow o-ring leak.  Fan has been sand blasted, primed and painted metallic black as has the fan shroud.  New battery.  Blower motor was completely disassembled, blasted, primed painted & new brushes added to motor.  Hood springs original and strong.  Windshield wiper motor and linkage disassembled, sand blasted, primed and painted.  Needs wiper blades.  Original radiator was flushed, in excellent condition.  New heater hoses.  Brake master cylinder is new, lines original.

I’m sure I have forgotten something, so please ask questions.  As you can tell no expense was spared on this restoration.  Issues which bug me… I would replace the aluminum transmission lines with stainless.  The drives door has a clear coat run under the door handle which could easily be smoothed and buffed.  Right on the lip of the trunk near the trunk emblem (original chrome emblem with aftermarket plastic insert – both hood and trunk) it looks like some dirt is under the paint, but you will receive extra paint and clear coat.  The driver’s sun visor droops although it has new hardware.

Lastly, while this car is awesome it’s being sold as-is.  Only offering to the lower 48.  Preferred local pickup, but I’m OK selling to anyone but you will be responsible for transport, and the second it leaves my driveway I’m not responsible.  I will take tons of photos of the transportation company loading the car for you.  I’ve used “crossover transport” to have the car delivered to my home and the cost was fairly reasonable.  Best of luck on the bidding.  Be sure and send me a photo of you winning car shows!

$500 immediate non-refundable deposit required.  It’s expected that you will pick up the vehicle within two weeks.

Zombie cars: A dozen discontinued vehicles people still buy new

Thu, Jan 6 2022

Car models come and go, but as revealed by monthly sales data, once a car is discontinued, it doesn't just disappear instantly. And in the case of some models, vanishing into obscurity can be a slow, tedious process. That's the case with the 12 cars we have here. All of them have been discontinued, but car companies keep racking up "new" sales with them. There are actually more discontinued cars that are still registering new sales than what we decided to include here. We kept this list to the oldest or otherwise most interesting vehicles still being sold as new, including a supercar. We'll run the list in alphabetical order, starting with *drumroll* ... BMW 6 Series: 55 total sales BMW quietly removed the 6 Series from the U.S. market during the 2019 model year. It had been available in three configurations, a hardtop coupe, a convertible and a sleek four-door coupe-like shape.   BMW i8: 18 total sales We've always had a soft spot for the BMW i8, despite the fact that it never quite fit into a particular category. It was sporty, but nowhere near as fast as similarly-priced competitors. It looked very high-tech and boasted a unique carbon fiber chassis design and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but wasn't really designed for maximum efficiency or maximum performance. Still, the in-betweener was very cool to look at and drive, and 18 buyers took one home over the course of 2021.   Chevy Impala: 750 total sales The Impala represented classic American tastes at a time when American tastes were shifting away from soft-riding sedans with big interior room and trunk space and into higher-riding crossovers. A total of 750 sales were inked last year.   Chrysler 200: 15 total sales The Chrysler 200 was actually a pretty nice sedan, with good looks and decent driving dynamics let down by a lack of roominess, particularly in the back seat. Of course, as we said regarding the Chevy Impala, the number of Americans in the market for sedans is rapidly winding down, and other automakers are following Chrysler's footsteps in canceling their slow-selling four-doors. Even if Chrysler never really found its footing in the ultra-competitive midsize sedan segment, apparently dealerships have a few leftover 2017 200s floating around. And for some reason, 15 buyers decided to sign the dotted line to take one of these aging sedans home last year.

Automakers score 8 out of top 20 most-watched ads on YouTube [w/videos]

Fri, 14 Dec 2012

Who would have ever thought there'd be a day where people are able to skip television commercials only to go to websites to watch them later? Such is the joy of a DVR and YouTube. AdWeek tabulated the 20 most-watched ads on YouTube, and found that nine were car-related including eight coming from automakers.
Volkswagen continued its Star Wars theme with two ads in the top 20, including the highest-ranking car commercial The Bark Side spot at number three with almost 18 million views, which doesn't even have a single car in it. Some of our favorites are from Chrysler with Clint Eastwood in It's Halftime in America and House Arrest with Charlie Sheen for the Fiat 500 Abarth. Chevrolet, Honda, Audi and Toyota were the other automakers in the top 20, but we'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention one of the coolest ads on the list, the Hot Wheels corkscrew jump.
Of all the car videos, only the Fiat ad wasn't played during a Super Bowl. Check out all eight videos - in order - after the jump. Nike took the top spot with its My Time is Now ad that has been seen online more than 20 million times with Pepsi's Uncle Drew posted up in the runner-up; some of the other videos include four Old Spice commercials and an ad in which Snoop Dogg is pedaling Hot Pockets.

Man spent $75 on a truck that lasted 38 years

Mon, Jan 5 2015

Absurd as it is, some buyers today are worried about getting their car to last throughout the term of their seven-year car loan. Minnesota resident Bob Sportel has the opposite issue: his Chevrolet truck seemingly won't die. Sportel needed a cheap ride to get to work when he took a job at a farmer's co-op 38 years ago, so he bought a rusty 1957 Chevy pickup for $75 from a farmer; at the time, the 20-year-old truck was almost as old as Bob was. After nearly four decades of daily driving and an estimated 300,000 miles, Sportel is still driving the truck today. Bolts secure a fender, Bondo secures the lights, what looks like a whole roll of duct tape keeps him sitting on the bench seat instead of in it. For a 58-year-old pickup that's never seen a garage or a new coat of paint – but did get its oil changed four times a year – that's not bad; Sportel thinks his repair bill hasn't got above $1,000 for the entire time he's owned the truck. He still has no plans to get rid of it, saying, "It just becomes a part of you." You can watch his story in the video above. News Source: KARE11.com Chevrolet Truck Classics Videos
