The last generation SS Impala (1994-96) has become a legend to enthusiasts all over the world, impressed by its dependability, roomy interior, sleeper looks and incredible power. Certainly the ultimate Impala SS culminated in ’96 when Chevy finally dropped the dorky digital gauges and the column shifter in favor of a console-mounted gear lever. Now considered a contemporary classic, the automobile was Chevy’s flagship and is certainly among the fastest and most reliable American sports sedans money can buy.

With the attrition rate of these cars often accelerated by highway commuters or the new generation of “Fast & Furious” juveniles, it'd be a nice surprise to find an extremely low mile example of the species that received all the PROPER modifications to compete with the new millennium of supercars AND despite being 18-years-old, still sparkles and shines like the day it rolled-off the showroom floor.

The most likely place to unearth such a rare gem would be Southern California, with its mild climate and large number of affluent car enthusiasts. Such an amazing find is the miraculously well preserved example presented for auction here!

With only 12,005 original miles, this Impala has certainly lived a charmed life.

The current owner is a prominent businessman in Orange County who keeps the car covered and sheltered in his “man cave” among a private collection of museum quality, collector automobiles.

During his ownership, (less than 3,000 miles ago) at a cost of $18,899.11, the car received a full engine "performance rebuild" complete with stroker engine design and transmission overhaul.

All work was performed by Superior Automotive Engineering in Placentia, CA.

Here is a copy of the 3-page work order:

Here is the Dyno on the engine measuring 475 horsepower with 466 ft. lbs of torque:

The ultimate "sleeper" that seats 5 adults. The exhaust is surprisingly quiet, the engine idles super-smooth and passes strict CA emmission requirements.

Hence, a unique opportunity arises to obtain a coveted SS, one that enjoys a most beneficial climate and is pampered beyond belief by a mature owner with big pockets and the willingness to pay up for the best services and performance upgrades money can buy.

Let's check out this dream find now, inside and out!

To call the paint "well preserved" would be a gross understatement; the truly marvelous original finish has retained its magical luster over the years and still appears stunningly beautiful today.

This SS has never suffered any collision damage and there are virtually no rock chips or scratches to report.

Photos above and below show a small scratch in the fender well.

Otherwise, trunk, hood and door gaps are in perfect alignment; confirming the Impala’s pampered existence for the past 18 years.

The lowered stance and wide wheels/tires are no visual gimmicks, mind you.

With acceleration from zero to sixty in the sub 5-second range and a top speed of over 160mph, the full Hotchkis performance suspension becomes a vital part of survival.

So are the custom widened, 17” alloy wheels, which are a dramatic improvement in both looks and performance on the SS

…especially when fitted with Fresh Nitto NT 555 Extreme ZR Radials 285/40ZR17 in front and 315/35ZR17 out back

Let’s have a close inspection underneath.

More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage.

This original chassis presents itself free of any kind of damage or corrosion.

Hotchkis performance suspension components throughout and modified exhaust can be seen here.

Most importantly, there is absolutely NO evidence collision damage or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.

Peeking inside this SS, luxury is abundant.

This Impala comes with the full leather interior that exudes a fantastic aroma; let's investigate!

The 12,005 miles shown on the digital odometer are original!

Novero TrustyOne Universal Bluetooth Car Kit w/Microphone & Music Playback is a nice addition to the audio system and provides superior hands-free cell phone operation.

The AM/FM/ audio system features upgraded amp and speakers with the 6-disc CD changer in the trunk (how 90’s!).

Oil temp and pressure gauges located here.

Fully optioned with power seats, windows and heated mirrors, everything works perfectly, of course with ice cold A/C.

Books, manuals, and documents are included and there's also a spare key set with remote.

The condition of this leather interior is consistent only with a cherished, low-mileage car that's been garaged all its life.

How about a quick peek into the spacious trunk.

Power amp located here.

Cargo net still in tact.

CD Changer located here.

Now for the best part; under the hood.

Inside the toothbrush-clean engine bay, lives Chevy’s fabled LT1 power plant. All the modifications were carefully engineered to pass strict CA emissions standards. A smog certificate will be provided for CA buyer.

This stroker engine develops an astonishing 475 horses @5,900 rpm.

This engine runs super strong and displays no ill manners whatsoever--like smoking, oil piddling, or drinking.

Notice Edelbrock stainless steel exhaust system and MSD Ignition

Not a single oil leak to note. Dry as a bone and clean as a whistle.

With an $18,000 drive train overhaul/build within the last 3000 miles, the new owner can be assured of trouble free driving in the long distant future.

Drivability:

The car runs, drives, handles, and stops flawlessly. Docile around town, on the track or above 4,500rpm, it throws you back in your seat!

Driving this contemporary classic is truly is an unforgettable, uniquely pleasurable experience. Its low mileage and full engine/transmission overhaul certainly provides an extra dimension of satisfaction: there are no squeaks or rattles; this SS feels as solid as a rock!

Here's your chance to acquire one of the last-generation Chevy 4-door supercars. The SS delivers everything on its promise: creature comforts, extreme driving pleasures, undiminished prestige, and unlimited appreciation potential.

Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car

Wed, 20 Feb 2013

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....

Dodge vs. Chevy tug-of-war taken to the extreme

Mon, 17 Dec 2012

They say "idle hands are the devil's playground," but said playgrounds grow to Disney-sized proportions when a pair of jacked-up trucks, two egos, a chain and an empty mall parking lot are involved. Proof of this is the video below, which shows a Cummins-powered Dodge Ram circa 2006 to 2008 chained tail-to-tail with what looks to be a gasoline-powered Chevrolet Silverado from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
We don't necessarily have to tell you who wins this battle, but we'll let you see for yourself the lengths the "winning" driver goes to prove his point. There's plenty of foul language in the video below, so beware that this might be Not Safe For Work, and not that we should have to tell you, but please, do not try this at home.

First privately owned Corvette Stingray blitzes 1/4 mile in 12.23 at 114.88 mph

Tue, 01 Oct 2013

Chevrolet's latest road rocket, the Corvette Stingray, is a very quick car. If one needs further proof of that, we recommend they take a look at this video from Hennessey of what is claimed to be the first privately owned C7 Corvette to make a pass down the quarter mile. Not just any quarter mile, mind, this black C7 blitzed its way down the tuner's primary testing dragstrip. The Chevrolet ran the quarter in just 12.23 seconds at 114.88 miles per hour. That is a very quick time for a stock car.
Equipped with the Z51 package and a six-speed automatic transmission, not only does the C7 run a solid time, but it does so with little to no drama. That won't last though, as Hennessey will likely return it to its owner with far more power - we just hope they show a drag run of the completed product. Take a look below to watch the C7's 12.23-second run on video.
