Time Capsule- Original 1974 El Camino - 12,800 Miles on 2040-cars
Kerrville, Texas, United States
I know it's so cliche...but things are only original once. There is no other El Camino in existence like this time capsule. This classic has only 12,800 original miles on her....That is not a misprint...12,800 original miles. This beauty belonged to the local Colorama TV repair man...who had multiple vehicles. He bought it new from Tom Benson Chevrolet in San Antonio in 1974. It was driven very little (obviously) until he parked it under a carport in 1992 where it sat until I found it a few months ago. It has been in the Texas Hill Country its entire life...NO RUST! It had a camper shell on it it's whole life so the bed has never seen weather. (El Camino's are notorious for rusting out where the front of the bed meets the cab.) The accumulation of the Texas dust over the years preserved the body. This is not a show car winner...but it could be one with very little work. The exterior panels still wear the original paint. The body panels are super straight and the gaps are perfect. There are some water spots, a few superficial surface rust specs and a few minor blemishes. No major exterior flaws...a few hours with some compound and a buffer would remove most of the minor blemishes. The tailgate is a little less preserved compared to rest of car (facing west for all those years). There are 2 spots on the tailgate that need to be touched up but I wanted to leave that up to the next owners discretion...I did not want to alter the originality of the exterior. There is also one small ding near the bumper on passenger side. All the trim and chrome are perfect and polished up nicely. All the glass is perfect. A mustache is required to cruise around in this American icon. I tried to keep it as original as possible. I spent 5 hours last Sunday detailing the entire car. Super...super clean. You could eat off the air cleaner or frame rails. I just had the engine, engine bay, under hood, undercarriage, and chassis sprayed with fresh paint. I would not hesitate to jump in this classic and drive her across the country. This time capsule still smells like a new (1974) car inside...so awesome. She is about as original as she could possibly be. The original floor mats, hubcaps, and even the jack and spare are there. Every light, buzzer, indicator, and gauge works as it should. Clock deleted. I don't believe she has ever been smoked in, eaten in or had a pet or child in it. Carpet, door panels, mats, dash, headliner, visors are perfect. I have the service records (very few) and the original owners manual and paperwork. Doors open and close perfectly. With less than 13K miles on the odometer she drives like brand new. The 350 starts right up and runs like a champ...plenty of power to light up the tires. Super smooth running motor...no noises, squeaks, vibrations, etc. Transmission (Turbo-Hydramatic) shifts perfectly. You can take your hands off the wheel at 90 MPH and she goes straight down the road. With the factory rear air shocks she rides like your grandmother's couch. No shakes, shimmies, rattles, etc. Factory trailer hitch installed. When you want to tow your classic Glastron boat or haul some fat chicks you can air up the rear shocks from the remote nipple by the license plate. Stops better than new. Remove spark plugs and put in marvel mystery oil Remove old fuel tank and replaced with new tank and straps Installed new fuel sending unit Replace fuel pump and fuel lines Remove AIR smog pump Remove and rebuild carburetor (new float) Replaced spark plugs with E3 plugs Replaced old points distributor with new HEI distributor and coil (not rebuilt) Installed New AcDelco HEI wires Replaced PCV valve Had brake rotors turned (O'Riellly's) Packed front wheel bearings (new seals) Installed new rotors and pads Serviced rear drums Purged brake lines and put in new brake lines and fluid (bled lines) Flushed cooling system Replaced thermostat, hoses, coolant Installed 4 new BF Goodrich tires (maybe 100 miles on them) Replaced various light bulbs (1 new headlight) Replaced all fluids I have receipts for all the new parts and labor. Wrenching was done by a hot rod German perfectionist mechanic. We kept all the original parts we replaced if someone wants to take her back to 100% original. I just put on new registration and inspection stickers. And I will keep it insured for you till you get her home. What the one of a kind El Camino needs to be perfect: There is 1 small tear on drivers side bench seat (easy fix) There is 1 place where stitching has come apart on driver side seat One interior corner trim needs to be replaced (cheap part) Touch up passenger bed corner. Maybe replace or repair that little corner piece Charge AC. Compressor works great. Have not converted it to newer refrigerant New drivers side remote mirror adjustor arm Heater core It might need a new alternator in near future. (Generator light comes on dimly sometimes if sitting at idle) There is no other El Camino in the world like this. I can't even find one this original with this few of miles to compare her to...does not exist. I will not let her go for anything less than $12,000. This is a better investment than the stock market and a lot more fun. I do not have to sell her, but I would like some more money to put a LS and a 6 speed in my 1968 Camaro (my baby). Im really more of a Camaro guy than El Camino guy. She is only going to go up in value if you drive her very little and take care of her. Or turn her into a classic work truck...contractor Cadillac! If you have any questions you can message me through EBAY or call or text me at 830-329-3284. I have bought and sold many vehicles on EBAY...I have described this baby as honestly as I can. I will assist with loading car on trailer and/or transportation logistics. Title in hand. |

NHTSA, IIHS, and 20 automakers to make auto braking standard by 2022
Thu, Mar 17 2016The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and virtually every automaker in the US domestic market have announced a pact to make automatic emergency braking standard by 2022. Here's the full rundown of companies involved: BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo (not to mention the brands that fall under each automaker's respective umbrella). Like we reported yesterday, AEB will be as ubiquitous in the future as traction and stability control are today. But the thing to note here is that this is not a governmental mandate. It's truly an agreement between automakers and the government, a fact that NHTSA claims will lead to widespread adoption three years sooner than a formal rule. That fact in itself should prevent up to 28,000 crashes and 12,000 injuries. The agreement will come into effect in two waves. For the majority of vehicles on the road – those with gross vehicle weights below 8,500 pounds – AEB will need to be standard equipment by September 1, 2022. Vehicles between 8,501 and 10,000 pounds will have an extra three years to offer AEB. "It's an exciting time for vehicle safety. By proactively making emergency braking systems standard equipment on their vehicles, these 20 automakers will help prevent thousands of crashes and save lives," said Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx said in an official statement. "It's a win for safety and a win for consumers." Read on for the official press release from NHTSA. Automakers making the commitment are Audi, BMW, FCA US LLC, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla Motors Inc., Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo Car USA.
GM won't really kill off the Chevy Volt and Cadillac CT6, will it?
Fri, Jul 21 2017General Motors is apparently considering killing off six slow-selling models by 2020, according to Reuters. But is that really likely? The news is mentioned in a story where UAW president Dennis Williams notes that slumping US car sales could threaten jobs at low-volume factories. Still, we're skeptical that GM is really serious about killing those cars. Reuters specifically calls out the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Sonic, and the Chevrolet Volt. Most of these have been redesigned or refreshed within the past few model years. Four - the LaCrosse, Impala, CT6, and Volt - are built in the Hamtramck factory in Detroit. That plant has made only 35,000 cars this year - down 32 percent from 2016. A typical GM plant builds 200,000-300,000 vehicles a year. Of all the cars Williams listed, killing the XTS, Impala, and Sonic make the most sense. They're older and don't sell particularly well. On the other hand, axing the other three seems like an odd move. It would leave Buick and Cadillac without flagship sedans, at least until the rumored Cadillac CT8 arrives. The CT6 was a big investment for GM and backing out after just a few years would be a huge loss. It also uses GM's latest and best materials and technology, making us even more skeptical. The Volt is a hugely important car for Chevrolet, and supplementing it with a crossover makes more sense than replacing it with one. Offering one model with a range of powertrain variants like the Hyundai Ioniq and Toyota Prius might be another route GM could take. All six of these vehicles are sedans, Yes, crossover sales are booming, but there's still a huge market for cars. Backing away from these would be essentially giving up sales to competitors from around the globe. The UAW might simply be publicly pushing GM to move crossover production to Hamtramck to avoid closing the plant and laying off workers. Sales of passenger cars are down across both GM and the industry. Consolidating production in other plants and closing Hamtramck rather than having a single facility focus on sedans might make more sense from a business perspective. GM is also trying to reduce its unsold inventory, meaning current production may be slowed or halted while current cars move into customer hands. There's a lot of politics that goes into building a car. GM wants to do what makes the most sense from a business perspective, while the UAW doesn't workers to lose their jobs when a factory closes.
Toyota tops Kelley Blue Book's Resale Value Awards
Tue, 27 Nov 2012Kelley Blue Book announced its annual Best Resale Value Award winners, and we weren't too surprised to see the list dominated by Japanese automakers - mainly Toyota and Honda. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota.
To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively.
The overall top 10 models for the best resale value in 2013 are, in alphabetical order:
