Up for auction is my father's rare 1959 Chevrolet El Camino. First year for the El Camino and unique styling for this year.  Way nicer than the 1960 and later models. These do not come up for sale very often.  This car was done about 20 years ago.  Not a frame off or expensive restoration. Was built to be driven not parked in a garage all its life.  Was given fresh paint and a decent interior.  This car is NOT a show car, just a daily driver.  But from what I have seen for sale for this year El Camino, it is very nice.  90% of the trim is original to the car, only replaced what was missing.  I included pictures of some of the nicks and scratches that are on the car.  Some bubbling on the rocker panels, and some rust underneath the car.  Overall good paint, shows very nice.  He had a fiberglass tonneau cover built for it, but can be removed easily.  The skirts are not original to the car, so the fit can be a littler better, but still looks cool.  Interior is in good shape, nothing fancy, again, this was done 20 years ago.  Replaced the rear sway bar, fuel pump and tires.  4 new Hankook tires with about 60 miles on them.  Starter may need to be replaced soon, but I am not replacing, I do not want to put any more money into the car, I want to stay married.  Small Block 350 motor, runs strong.  My father drove the car on Sundays, so it shouldn't have too many miles on it. Edelbrock Performer intake, and Edelbrock 650 carb.  Turbo 350 transmission.  As far as we know, the car has never been in an accident.  Pretty straight car.  My dad bought the car in Texas and was there(El Paso) for the last 20 some years, so we are assuming it has always been a desert car.  I have posession of the car now, in Phoenix AZ.  All in all this a great looking car that needs a little more TLC.  Great as is, or can be restored to be a great show piece.  Buyer is responible for shipping, I will be willing to drive the car to a local shipper here in Phoenix and surrounding areas.

Question of the Day: What's the most irritating car name?

Wed, Mar 9 2016

You hear a lot about how the Chevrolet Nova was a sales flop in Mexico because "No va" means "it doesn't go" in Spanish; in fact, the Nova sold pretty well south of the border, and in any case most Spanish-speakers know that "Nova" means "new" in Latin and Portuguese. However, General Motors doesn't deserve to be let off the hook for bad car names, because the Oldsmobile Achieva— no doubt inspired by the excruciating "coffee achievers" ads of the 1980s— scrapes the biggest fingernails down the screechiest chalkboard in the US-market car-name world. That is, unless you think Daihatsu's incomprehensible choice of Charade was worse. Meanwhile, Japanese car buyers could get machines with cool names like Mazda Bongo Friendee or Honda Life Dunk. It's just not fair! So, what car name drives you the craziest? Related Video: Auto News Design/Style Chevrolet Honda Mazda Daihatsu Automotive History questions car names

2015 Chevy Tahoe gets Police Patrol Vehicle treatment

Thu, 07 Nov 2013

That was fast. Mere days after showing a Police Concept based on the 2015 Tahoe at the SEMA Show, Chevrolet has announced that it will build a PPV model based on the SUV to do battle with the Ford Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer) and Dodge Durango Special Service.
You'll recall that the Tahoe has been police staple for several years, predating both the Explorer and Durango police variants, so the fact that the new model would spawn a police variant is hardly surprising. Like the civilian model, the 2015 PPV benefits from a more efficient 5.3-liter, direct-injection V8 that pumps out 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It also features more high-strength steel, offering better crash protection, on top of optional safety items like lane departure warning, forward collision alert and a Safety Alert Seat.
The press release is rather light on police-specific items, aside from the auxiliary battery, which keeps the myriad of electronics in a modern police car running even when the engine isn't. Lightbars, 17-inch steel wheels on Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires and a push bar round out the mods for the Tahoe PPV. The cabin features a revised center console and room for laptop and other equipment mounts.

Consumer Reports criticizes small turbo engines for misleading performance, fuel economy claims [w/video]

Tue, 05 Feb 2013

Consumer Reports has taken aim at at small-displacement, forced-induction engines, saying the powerplants don't manage to deliver on automaker fuel economy claims. Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options "are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines."
Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker's Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute's researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.
The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises. You can check out the full press release below. You can also read the full study on the Consumer Reports site, or scroll down for a short video recap.
