1979 El Camino, Custom, Muscle, Classic, Rare, Rat Rod, Truck, 2wd, Leather on 2040-cars
Alba, Texas, United States
I have a 1979 El Camino in wonderful condition. It is a running driving project car. What I mean by that is it runs and drives with plenty of power and smooth. However, it will not pass inspection at this time. To do so it will need new windshield wipers and the horn re-connected. (It was disconnected when the previous owner removed his $5,000 sound system) It also needs the light bulb behind the gauges replaced and the speedometer reconnected. The car does come with AC, but the previous owner also disconnected the fan switch. It works about 1/2 the time The car has a custom University of Texas paint job and custom UT leather interior. The leather covers the entire inside including the dash, ceiling, etc. There are no tears of any imperfections in the leather. Currently it does not have a head unit. (CD Player) But, it is already wired for not only a head unit but for four 12” subwoofers Sub box picture available upon request. If you desire and already had about six tweeters installed. Loud music not your thing? The sub box can be removed for a spacious storage compartment. The drivers side door is missing the interior handle and the passenger side is missing the window handle. You can buy the whole set of chrome interior handles for $19 online. The exterior is in great shape considering the age. There are only two tiny rust spots smaller than a dime. ( Will post pictures of all imperfections) This is a terrific car but I want to be candid about every little thing that might be considered a flaw. Unlike most sellers, I am NOT try to “get one past you.” I myself have been burned purchasing things online. Therefore, I will be honest and candid about any and all questions you might have or imperfections. When I asked the man at the body shop he assured me the custom paint job is worth between 7-10 thousand dollars. The paint on it is not in PERFECT condition. But is has been garage kept and has never been in an accident. As you can see by the photos it has a bed cover that is also custom painted. You might not see it, but it also has a bed liner under that. There is one special quality I like about the car and I have NEVER seen on a El Camino. It has a sunroof!!!! Of course its after market and it you desire you can remove the glass entirely. It will need a new set of tires on it. Right now I can drive it but wouldn’t trust the rubber to go long distance. When I got the car it had 22” rims on it and they fit. IF I were to keep the car, I planned on lifting if 3” and put some big tires and a brush guard on it. LOL Just goes to show everyone has different taste and if you’re a UT fan this car will accommodate them all. Under the hood is yet another custom surprise. The entire engine has been rebuilt from the heads up with nothing but Edelbroch parts. Including a four barrel carburetor, performance plugs with wires and a chromed out-oversized alternator. It was installed to support the massive sound system the previous owner had. It also had true dual Flowmaster exhaust with custom chrome tips. To put it mildly, the car simply sounds amazing. I have not had it dyno tested but I HAVE been racing for 15 years. I would guess it has about 370-390hp. You might be asking yourself. “If this car can be worth so much more, why doesn’t this guy fix it up himself?” This isn’t my first El Camino project so I was excited to get this one to work on. However, life had a different plan. Due to a medical issue I have had to have three surgical procedures in the past year and I simply CANT put in the wrench time. But this WILL make someone very happy. It is definitely one of a kind and you shouldn’t see another one like it. Whether you are a University of Texas student, fan, alumni or teacher this is the car for you. It will defiantly turn heads on campus and every red light you stop at. I have video as well upon request. Also, last picture with the 22" rims was taken back when it was a show car. NORMAL wheels and tires on it now. Right now I would trust this vehicle to carry me across country and back. (except for the tires of course. Feel free to E-mail me with any questions, more photos or videos. Or call 817-905-9566 ask for Jonni or E-mail me at mamassnokkums@yahoo.com I have several nice videos I would like to share as well. Look forward to our future business together. OH, and make me and offer...never know what I might be willing to settle for. I hesitate to mention this, but SOME trades might be considered with cash. Vert-A-Pac train cars kept your Chevy Vega's price in check
Fri, 01 Mar 2013Our apologies to those who've seen this before, but for the rest of the class, how awesome are these pictures of the Vert-A-Pac shipping system General Motors came up with to ship the Chevrolet Vega back in the 1970s? Developed along with Southern Pacific Railroad, GM was able to double the amount of Vega models it could ship by packing them into the unique storage cars vertically.
At the time, rail cars could fit 15 vehicles each, but Chevrolet was able to lower shipping costs by making it possible to ship 30 Vegas per rail car, in turn allowing the price of the Vega to remain as low as possible. Each rail car had 30 doors that would fold down so that a Vega could be strapped on, and then a forklift would come along and lift the door into place. All the cars were positioned nose down, and since they were shipped with all of their required fluids, certain aspects had to be designed specifically for this type of shipping, including an oil baffle in the engine, a special battery and even a repositioned windshield washer reservoir. See for yourself in our image gallery above.
2016 Chevy Malibu exhaustively tested with four decades of data
Fri, Mar 13 2015Chevy is preparing to unveil its new Malibu sedan at the upcoming New York Auto Show next month. But when it does, it's not like it will have appeared overnight. The development of any new vehicle – especially one as widely produced by a major automaker as the Malibu – involves rigorous and relentlessly punishing tests. In the Malibu's case, that meant 1.5 million miles of driving from the scorching heat of Arizona in July to the frigid cold of northern Canada in January and everything in between. The Bowtie brand also says it incorporated four decades' worth of data taken from vehicles driving in locations around the world since 1972 in order to make the Malibu the best it could be. We'll have to wait to find out the results of all that exhaustive testing, but you can catch a sneak peek at the new sedan in the video above. Four Decades of Data Used to Test 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Recorded customer use drives durability testing for next-generation midsize sedan 2015-03-11 DETROIT – Data collected over decades from across the globe is helping ensure the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu can handle the world's worst roads even if the all-new midsize sedan never drives on them. Data collection boxes are placed in cars in real-world driving conditions around the world. Since 1972, these devices have accurately recorded the harshness and frequency of every jounce, bump and shudder inflicted on the car on roads in the U.S., Russia, Saudi Arabia and developing markets. "Although most Malibu owners will never put their car through similar abuse, we test all new vehicles in extreme climates, inclement weather and on punishing road surfaces," said Dan Devine, Malibu validation engineer. "The 2016 Malibu is definitely up to these challenges." Tests like these ensured the current generation Malibu was dependable and durable, two qualities that in turn helped Malibu stand out from its rivals in important quality surveys, such as J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study and Vehicle Dependability Study. General Motors engineers analyze the data to calculate the precise amount of damage potholes and other hazards create over 150,000 miles. Then the conditions are replicated at GM's Milford Proving Ground in Michigan on three unique road courses, each riddled with simulated potholes of increasing severity. Engineers run preproduction cars through the course up to hundreds of times.
These cars are headed to the Great Crusher In The Sky
Fri, 24 Aug 2012It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse.
CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own. In the slow sales column, cars like the Lexus HS 250h, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and the full Maybach lineup appear, while the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda CX-7 and Hyundai Veracruz are all having their gaps filled with more modern and more fuel-efficient alternatives. Obvious exceptions to the rule include models that still sell in decent numbers like the Jeep Liberty and the Chrysler Town & Country (which will eventually be replaced by a crossover-like vehicle).
Check out our gallery of discontinued cars above, then scroll down for more information.
