1967 396 Dragmaster El Camino, Drag Racing Historical Vehicle on 2040-cars
1967 Chevrolet El Camino 396- DRAGMASTER Dode Martin's personal daily driver shop truck from 1970-1995. Dode bought this factory 396 4 Speed Marina Blue with Black bench seat interior El Camino in 1970 less engine and trans. There just happened to be a nasty 440 Chrysler engine with a 727 automatic sitting in his shop, so Dode decided to fit it into the El Camino. A lot of parts custom worked by Dode back in 1970 are still on it, however the 440 and 727 were removed back in the late 1990's for a SBC conversion. The GM rally wheels were widened by Dode with chrome centers and gold rims. The rear trailing arms were boxed by Dode. Dode stitched up the door panels after personally painting the truck in traditional Dragmaster gold. Dode told me the gold paint is 1956 Chevrolet Grecian Gold and the red he used on his DART dragsters and the famous TWO THING twin supercharged SBC front engine rail is 1957 Chevrolet Matador Red. I obtained permission from Dode to place the DRAGMASTER decals on the doors and I planned to do a frame up build and incorporate more DRAGMASTER style to the El Camino with the red. I pulled the SBC and auto trans out and located a date matching fresh .040 over 396 block to match the truck. The block is included with the Camino. No trans. The original 12 bolt posi rear axle is still in it. The El Camino has never been wrecked, however the hood has some filler in the front peak due to Dode moving the truck in his shop while sitting on a bucket and tapping a work bench in front of him when he fell off the bucket. That happened before the Camino was painted gold. Dode told me the first paint he put on it was solid black around 1970 or so. The fenders, doors and rest of the body are original sheetmetal. There is very little rust in this El Camino- there is a little in the lower back window jamb.
There is a State of California label in the left door jamb that confirms a 440 Chrysler and Automatic were in it up to 1995, when the the truck was required to pass a smog check in order to sell it. Dode swapped out the 12:1 compression 440 for a more stock version. Dode told me the nasty 440 was sold to a MOPAR guy for a race car restoration. That 440 was likely part of the Dodge Chargers effort from the early 1960's. The next owner had a hot rod shop (Hot Rods and Custom Stuff; Escondido, CA) swap in a SBC and 700R4 for daily driving. I bought the El Camino in 2012 with intentions to keep it, however that was 2 weeks prior to my daughter being born and I have had zero time to work on it. I paid four thousand more for it then than I am asking for it here, so my listing price is absolutely as low as I am willing to sell it for. Last 2 pics were scans of prints Dode let me borrow from his personal files- they show the Camino as it was about 25 years ago. The black license plates were changed out by the DMV around 1995 based on documentation I have. The El Camino is also listed for sale locally therefore I retain the right to end the auction if no bids have been placed. |

Recharge Wrap-up: Batty battery covers, Mercedes at Silvretta, new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid available in 2015
Tue, Jul 8 2014Apparently, Chevrolet Volt battery covers make suitable homes for bats. As part of an Eagle Scout project, Matthew Netherland created 30 bat houses out of scrapped Volt battery covers donated by Chevy. 22 of the bat houses will be set up near hydroelectric dams in Michigan. Each bat house will accommodate 100 bats, and divert the scrapped materials from the landfill. The battery covers also make great nesting boxes for wood ducks, which General Motors has previously set up at its Milford, Michigan Proving Ground. Last weekend was the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, which saw emissions-free vehicles cross the Montafon Mountains in Austria, including cars from Mercedes-Benz. These cars included the B-Class Electric Drive, B-Class F-Cell, SLS AMG Electric Drive and even the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. Also on hand for the Silvretta Classic Rally was a V8-powered C111, a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC and 300 SL Roadster. Read more in the press release, below. BMW has finalized pricing for the i8 in the US at $135,700 (plus $925 in destination charges). In addition to the base price tag, which we've known for a while, BMW Blog has the complete pricing guide with options and packages. Most of the i8 orders were the Pure Impulse World package, which includes various aesthetic upgrades. It also provides membership to the BMW i Pure Impulse Program, which allows you to "to enjoy innovative ideas and trends in a variety of areas, including home styling, culture, gourmet gastronomy, design and many more." While the gas-powered Sonatas get updated now for the 2015 model year, the Hybrid remains unchanged until late this year or early 2015, when it will arrive as a 2016 model. Hyundai is offering a 2015 Sonata Eco edition, but with 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway (32 combined), it's not quite as appealing as the current Sonata Hybrid's 36/40/38 figures. Read more here. In June, average US fuel economy was 25.5 miles per gallon, making it the fifth straight month above 25 mpg, according to University of Michigan. The average window sticker ratings from vehicles sold in June dropped slightly from 25.6 mpg in May. The year started at 24.9 mpg in January, and hasn't dropped below 25 mpg since.
Nissan Leaf ends 2013 with best sales month ever, but can't catch Chevy Volt
Fri, Jan 3 2014Nissan and Chevrolet both ended 2013 with solid sales figures for their plug-in vehicles, the first two that were released (all the way back at the end of 2010) from major automakers. As has been the story for most of 2013, December sales for the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt were roughly the same. When we left the year-to-date running tally at the end of November, the Volt was at 20,702, while the Leaf was at 20,080. As you can tell from the image above (if you've been noticing the trend in these EV sales monthly flash-reports), the Leaf outsold the Volt, but was it enough to put the Nissan on top for the year? In 2013, Nissan sold 22,610 Leafs, more than twice as many as in 2012. Almost. The Leaf made a valiant attempt, and did have its best month ever with 2,529 units sold. That means that for 2013, Nissan moved a total of 22,610 Leafs, more than twice as many as in 2012 (that year, Nissan sold only 9,819 Leafs in the US) and actually more than 2012 and 2011 Leaf sales combined (which was 19,493). Nissan continues to see the effects of its price drop and expanded sales areas, with Georgia rapidly becoming a Leaf hotbed. Nissan's Paige Presley said that Atlanta was once again the Leaf's number one market and that, "sales are expanding deeper into Georgia markets such as Macon and Columbus." The Volt saw a boost upwards from a November slump and sold 2,392 units in December. That puts the plug-in hybrid's annual total at 23,094, just down from the 23,461 sold in 2012. For all of 2013, though, the Volt outsold the Leaf by 484 vehicles. In a competition like this, we'll count that as a win for both sides. We will our more detailed monthly green car sales report, which covers more of the fuel efficient vehicles on the market, up soon. GM recalling over 243,000 crossovers over possible seat belt defect
Tue, 17 Aug 20102010 Buick Enclave - Click above for high-res image gallery
The summer of 2010's recall hit parade continues unabated today, with General Motors having just announced that it is asking 243,403 owners of its 2009-2010 Lambda crossovers to bring their three-row haulers in for inspection. The culprit? Second-row seat belts in select Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook CUVs have "failed to perform properly in a crash."
According to GM, a second-row seat-side trim piece is to blame, as it can impede the upward rotation of the buckle after the seat is folded flat. As a result, if the buckle makes contact with the seat frame, cosmetic damage can occur, potentially requiring additional force to operate the buckle properly. So far, no great shakes, but in the process of applying that additional force, the occupant may push the buckle cover down to the strap, potentially revealing and depressing the red release button. As a result of this, the belt may not latch, or in certain cases, it may actually appear to be latched when, in fact, it isn't.
