Some Fun Facts about the 1982 Chevrolet Corvette Collector Edition (mostly from Pete Dutton):
  • The last of an era. 1982 was the year Chevrolet finished production on what I believe is the best looking Corvette ever made. The “Shark” or C3 was certainly the most popular and longest lasting Corvette body style, running for 14 years, from 1968 to 1982. Because of this, the ’82 is the most refined, luxurious, fuel-efficient and bug-free Corvette of all of the C3 line.
  • This was the fastest American production car in 1982.
  • The Collector Edition was the first Corvette with a base price of over $20,000, which is the equivalent of over $50,000 today. This particular Corvette was fully loaded, so it sold for over $22,000.
  • This was the only C3 Corvette with fuel injection, making it much more powerful and fuel efficient than other small-block Corvettes of the late seventies and early eighties.
  • Production of the 1982 Collector Edition cars was only 6,759, all produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
  • The first Corvette with a hatchback that opened, which gives it a good amount of cargo space that’s easy to access.
  • 4-wheel independent suspension with all disc brakes
  • The Collector Edition was just the kind of 2-seater sports car you wanted to take on a long cross-country trip - it was comfortable and fun to drive. Even today the Collector Edition makes a great cruising vehicle. It has most of the modern conveniences found on today's well-equipped cars, and with a smooth and peppy V8 under the hood along with good handling, driving this thirty year car you sacrifice nothing. In fact driving one on the streets will turn more heads and garner more attention than a new C6.
  • There is no mistaking the Collector Edition, it had enough unique items not available on any other 1982 Corvette. The unique items were a silver-beige (paint code 59) exterior color, an opening rear glass hatch (all other 82 Corvettes had fixed glass), a silver leather interior accented by multi-color gray trim, 15x8 inch finned aluminum wheels, brown graduated decals and stripping throughout the exterior, and bronze tinted glass T-tops. Also part of the package was standard Corvette Collector Edition emblems - one on the front hood, another on the rear gas cap, and another on the steering wheel hub.
  • The C3's distinctive styling was taken right from the 1965 Mako Shark II show car which first made an appearance at the 1965 New York Auto Show. The 1982 Corvette Collector Edition was in a way a tribute to the Mako Shark II - since it just like the Mako Shark II had a two tone paint job that mimicked a shark. The Collector Edition was a lighter color but the graduated brownish decals on the hood and along the lower beltline gave onlookers the impression that it was a custom paint job since the decals looked like different shades of paint instead of a decal. Chevrolet really had to be commended on the finished product since it was such a distinctive exterior - like nothing seen before or after its release.
  • Interesting to note the 1982 Corvette was the first Corvette to receive a 4-speed automatic transmission   (GM's new 200-4R which was introduced in Fall of 1980). The downside was this transmission was mandatory on all 1982 Corvette models including the Collector Edition. No manual transmission option was offered for 1982.
  • The Corvette had something the Mustang GT didn't and that was a solenoid controlled ram air induction system that pulled cold air from the area between the rear hood and the windshield and sucked it right into a big hole on the top of the Cross-Fire air filter assembly. The solenoid opened up a flap when the accelerator went past the halfway mark resulting in a sweet bellowing sound that emanated from under the hood - the sound was a reminder of the high powered Corvettes from the golden era. A Cross-Fire Corvette owner may not have had all the ponies under the hood of the super performance Corvettes during the original muscle car period, but the 1982 Corvette still had the soul of one due to the sweet sounding ram air induction system.

Safety group pans GM’s new Marketplace in-dash shopping

Wed, Dec 6 2017

When it comes to our cars, is the Internet of Things a godsend? Or a hidden menace that will create more problems than it will solve? On the same day General Motors announced it will equip newer-model cars with its in-dash Marketplace e-commerce app, a prominent safety group was shooting it down. National Safety Council President Deborah Hersman tells Bloomberg the technology will only contribute to distracted driving and hurt efforts to stem the tide of rising auto fatalities, which grew 5.6 percent to more than 37,000 in the U.S. in 2016. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says distracted driving was responsible for 3,477 fatalities and 391,000 injuries in 2015, the most recent year for which it has data. "There's nothing about this that's safe," Hersman told Bloomberg. "If this is why they want WiFi in the car, we're going to see fatality numbers go up even higher than they are now." Marketplace, developed with IBM, will allow drivers — or more often, one hopes, their passengers — to order coffee or food, find gas stations and reserve hotel rooms from their dashboard screens. The technology is set to be uploaded automatically to nearly 1.9 million GM vehicles model-year 2017 and later that are equipped with WiFi hotspots and compatible systems. By the end of 2018, about 4 million Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles will be equipped with Marketplace. The app will debut with a limited number of participating retailers, including TGI Fridays, Shell, Exxon Mobil and Starbucks, with more likely to join later. Online retail giant Amazon is also partnering with automakers such as Ford to bring e-commerce capabilities inside the car through its Alexa personal assistant. While convenience is nice, one other thing is becoming clear as the IoT wedges its way into our cars: It's taking aim at some decidedly first-world problems.Related Video: Image Credit: GM Buick Cadillac Chevrolet GM GMC Technology Infotainment in-car entertainment marketplace e-commerce

Why the Corvette's Performance Data Recorder can be illegal in some states

Fri, 26 Sep 2014

The Performance Data Recorder with Valet Mode available on the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray seems like a fantastic tool for many owners. Whether they are taking 720p video while lapping the track in their new 'Vette, or just want to protect their purchase from inconsiderate joyriders, the system offers a lot of functionality in one package. However, one of the PDR's features might get buyers in trouble with the law, and it has nothing to do with recording some illicit high-speed driving on a favorite back road. The problem hinges on the various state laws concerning a person's right to privacy.
According to a letter posted by Jalopnik, Chevy dealers are asking 2015 Corvette owners not to use the Valet Mode portion of the PDR because it records audio in the cabin, in addition to performance specs. That's a problem because privacy laws vary from state to state with some requiring just one side's consent to tape sound and others requiring all parties to agree. According Jalopnik, 15 states mandate everyone's permission beforehand, but it's not clear whether these numbers are up to date. (Actually, the report varies, saying 13 states in some places and 15 in a list.)
According to the letter, Chevy is already working on a software update for the near future to rectify the issue. It's possible that simply adding a warning to drivers and the ability to turn off the audio recording function in Valet Mode might solve the problem. Obviously, this doesn't preclude Corvette drivers from using the performance aspect of the PDR, and owners are free tape lap after lap at the track.

Watch how Corvette Racing's new collision-avoidance radar system works

Fri, 22 Mar 2013

When it comes to technology used in racecars, we generally expect it to trickle down to production cars, not the other way around. Well, Pratt & Miller has developed a new rear-facing radar that operates in a similar fashion to what we're used to in modern blind spot detection systems, only it is also capable of tracking cars as they approach and relaying vital information to the driver via a large display screen.
The innovative radar system debuted at last weekend's 12 Hours of Sebring for Corvette Racing, and this system makes perfect sense for endurance races like this since the cars sometimes have to drive through the night and in poor weather conditions.
The radar can detect cars even with poor visibility, and uses easy-to-distinguish symbols for the driver to identify.
