Up for auction is my 1988 Chevrolet Corvette being sold as is.  From the outside, the cars paint is very good and was garaged for the first 21 years of its life.  The original top needs replacing as it leaks and the vinyl window cracked and discolored.  One day after it rained, the carpet was soaked so it was removed and discarded.  I am including a new top that I never had installed.

Because there is no carpeting and thermal barrier, you can feel the engine and transmission heat through floor and console.  I never put carpet back in because the car still leaks from the convertible top.  The carpet also acted as a noise shield.  Without it, the noise in the cabin is louder.

At 33,000 miles the original engine overheated on the way to work and was replaced with a rebuilt Tuff Dawg 383 TPI stroker that was purchased on ebay.  I have put 31,000 miles on the rebuilt engine, but am unsure what the life expectancy of it is.   I never upgraded the chip so that would need replacing.  The idle is stable at 700-800 rpm but smokes at startup, and burns a few quarts of oil a month.  It will occasionally stumble if the gas isn't pressed gradually.  I have gotten 25 miles per gallon highway.  Fuel needs to be 93 or it pings.  It runs much better cold when you start it up before it goes into closed loop and the computer with stock chip takes over making the timing off.  I drive it about 50 miles a day to work at highway speeds and the coolant and oil temperature stays reasonable, but in slow traffic the engine gets hot.

The transmission is a Doug Nash 4+3 manual with overdrive.  There is a squealing noise that could be either the pilot bearing, throw out bearing or input shaft bearing that you hear when the clutch is released.  It goes away when the clutch is depressed.  The transmission's overdrive will occasionally shift from 4th gear with overdrive to just 4th gear.  It did that several years back until I replaced the overdrive switch under the shifter.

The air conditioning doesn't work.  The compressor is bad.

The hood release cable handle is missing and cable needs replacing.  One headlight motor makes noise.

The alarm was drawing too much current, and I found my car's battery dead one to many times so I pulled the alarm fuse.  The only down side is that the horn was on that same fuse as the alarm.  The open door light periodically comes on with the doors closed.  The light switch knob is missing, but have been just pulling the rod that comes out without the knob.

I am trying to be as descriptive as I can and state that this is not a car that is good condition other than the paint.  There are no dents in the body.  Two of the tires are a year old and the others are about 3 months old.  The rims are weather worn and have some corrosion on the center caps.

This has been my daily driver for the last five years, but there are problems and the car is a fixer upper.  It may need a new engine and or transmission.  The car is 25 years old and is sold as is as a project and fixer upper with no warranty.  The car was sentimental to me being my late father's, but I don't have the money to fix it up.

I will include a brand new white top that you can pay to have installed or do it yourself.

If you want to come see the car in the Rolesville/Wake Forest NC area, please contact me.  I will accept paypal or cash.  A $250 deposit due at close of auction via paypal.  The balance due within 7 days in cash before you receive title and take possession of the car.  I have no way to ship this car.  You would have to make arrangements or pick it up.  Thank you.

GM sees 'strong year' in 2018, then gold in Chevy Silverado for 2019

Tue, Jan 16 2018

DETROIT — General Motors said on Tuesday it expects earnings in 2018 to be largely flat compared with 2017, but that profits should pick up pace in 2019 as its revamped line of high-margin pickup trucks hits the U.S. market. The 2018 earnings outlook was above market expectations, sending GM shares up more than 3 percent in premarket trading. "GM had a very good 2017 as we continued to transform our company to be more focused, resilient and profitable," GM Chief Executive Mary Barra said in a statement. "We are positioned for another strong year in 2018 and an even better one in 2019." GM and its Detroit rivals, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, are bringing on new trucks at a time when overall U.S. new vehicle sales have been falling, but truck sales continue to grow as consumers abandon passenger cars in favor of pickups, SUVs and crossovers. GM on Saturday fired a new round in the battle for profits from one of the U.S. auto industry's most lucrative segments when it showed a new generation of its Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at the Detroit auto show. The new Silverado, a highlight of the event, is the successor to GM's best-selling vehicle in North America. Sales of the current Silverado rose nearly 2 percent to 585,000 vehicles in 2017. In the coming months, the company will also reveal a revamped GMC Sierra pickup truck. U.S. new vehicle sales fell 2 percent in 2017 after hitting a record high in 2016, and are expected to drop further in 2018 as interest rates rise and more late-model used cars return to dealer lots to compete with new ones. GM said on Tuesday that while it retools a factory in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to make the new pickup trucks, it will shift some production to an Oshawa, Ontario, plant in order to avoid missing sales in a hot market for the vehicles. The No. 1 U.S. automaker said it will record a $7 billion non-cash charge for its fourth-quarter 2017 earnings related to deferred tax assets. GM said it expects capital expenditure in 2018 of around $8.5 billion, about $1 billion of which will go toward funding self-driving car technology. Last week, the company said it is seeking U.S. government approval for a fully autonomous car — one without a steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator pedal — to enter the automaker's first commercial ride-sharing fleet in 2019. GM said it expects 2017 earnings per share at the high end of its previously forecast range of $6 to $6.50.

GM tells owners not to use SUV wipers due to fire risk

Sun, Oct 11 2015

General Motors is recalling 31,685 examples of the 2016 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia because a short circuit in the windshield wiper motor can potentially lead to a fire. Due to the danger, the company is asking owners not to use the wipers until the problem is fixed, according to The Detroit Free Press citing the Associated Press. A manufacturing defect in the wiper motor cover means that the electrical terminals can come into contact and cause a short. The part could "melt, smoke, or catch fire," according to a statement from GM. The company will get them fixed immediately, and dealers will replace the cover. If there's bad weather at the time the owner specifies to get the recall work completed, the automaker will come pick up the crossovers. Depending on parts availability, the automaker will supply a rental car for customers, as well. The issue was discovered at the factory. According to the company's statement, only 6,405 actually made it to customers, and they were notified immediately by overnight letter. The rest were in dealer stock. The affected crossovers carry build dates between August 18, 2015 and September 24, 2015. Of those, there are 29,295 in the US and 1,073 in Canada. GM Statement: General Motors has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it will recall approximately 29,295 2016 model year Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia SUVs in the U.S. because the front windshield wiper motor may overheat when in use because of a manufacturing defect. In some cases, the front windshield wiper motor cover may melt, smoke or catch fire. The approximately 6,405 customers who have taken delivery of these vehicles were notified by overnight letter and are urged to contact a GM dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service appointment. These customers should not use the front windshield wipers until they have been repaired. If weather conditions prevent driving the vehicle without using the windshield wipers, GM will arrange to pick up the vehicle for servicing. If repair parts are unavailable, GM will provide a rental car at no cost until parts become available. The total population, including Canada, Mexico and exports, is approximately 31,685. About 25,280 of these vehicles are in dealer stock and will not be sold until repairs are made.

Anti-purist 1963 Ferrari GTE sports hot rod Chevy V8

Thu, Oct 8 2015

I remember reading a story around the time Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift came out. It focused on one of the star cars of that film, a 1967 Ford Mustang fastback that started the film as a shell, and in a pinch, was transformed into a modified masterpiece, complete with the RB26DETT engine from a Nissan Skyline GT-R (which started the film under the hood of an S15 Silvia). There was a genuine (and in our minds, absurd) fear in the article that taking a piece of classic American iron and fitting a twin-turbocharged JDM engine would result in some awful trend in the classic car community. If you thought a GT-R-powered classic Mustang was sacrilege, though, this car will probably make you vomit. For the rest of us, it's a neat piece of engineering. Shown above is a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTE, and yes, that's a 302-cubic-inch, small-block Chevrolet V8 under the hood. On top of that, it uses the six-speed manual transmission from a Viper, a nine-inch Ford rear end, and Mitsubishi-sourced paint. So yeah, it's a FrankenFerrari. Check out Road Heads' interview with this custom GTE's owner, which is followed by a brief test drive. And of course, head into Comments afterwards, and let us know what you think. Is this Yankee-powered 250 GTE blasphemous or badass?
