This auction is for a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette. I will accept any reasonable offer on this car so either use the buy it now feature or submit an offer but PLEASE do not waste my time and submit an offer or commit to the buy it now price if you have no intention of buying the car. The Corvette has red interior and exterior. It is a V-8 350. I planned on keeping this car and finishing it, however I do not have the time to do that anymore, thus why I am parting with it. I am passionate about Corvettes and want the next owner to know exactly what they are getting in this car, at least as much information I can give based on my experience and knowledge of the car. So this will not be a description of the car telling you how great the car is, looks, feels, etc. I want to give an honest and complete idea of what this car is so the next owner will enjoy it and not be surprised and most importantly disappointed. I am not a mechanic, I purchase Corvette C3's from time to time and do interior restorations and basic mechanical repairs. Saying that, after owning a half dozen of these models, this car runs well and the transmission is in good shape, other than the only leak I have observed which is transmission fluid. The engine itself runs strong, though since I added the California smog equipment to it, I do notice it is not as fast as it was before. Of course the smog equipment can be removed. When I bought this car I was told the engine was replaced with a rebuilt L82 from a 1979 and has less than 2000 miles on it, I cannot confirm this. Under the hood is the single snorkel air cleaner and duct so I assume it's just a L48 engine unless he just put the stock L48 air cleaner and duct back on because he didn't have the dual snorkel. It has the standard nose crunch on these models up front showing the chipped off paint that has been covered with touch up paint and that almost everyone I've seen has, and why everybody I know that has a C3 has a mask/bra on the front of their car. The windshield and back window are in good condition, no cracks or anything in them. The passenger side mirror assembly is a little loose connected to the door, most likely just needs to be tightened. The radio, clock, keyhole alarm on the drivers front fender, and horn do not work. The radio antenna does not go up and down, could be because the radio does not work, I do not know. The drivers and passenger side keyhole door lock "stick". I have never locked the doors but the handles work inside and out no problem opening and closing the doors. The driver's side power window switch needs replacement or new mount. The windows go up and down, though they are not zipping up and down, the motors may need to be lubricated or just deal with it as I have because they are slow and at times I have helped them up with my hand. The driver's side armrest is dismounted from the door panel. The driver's side door panel is loose from the car and needs to be mounted along with the armrest. The body is straight and I already repaired the doors so there is no sagging. The side view mirror on the driver's side is missing it's inside lever. The windshield wipers switch on the dash is missing. The T-Tops come off and on with ease, no issues with the latches. The gas gauge "wiggles" like it floats up and down. There is no air conditioning, the unit wasn't installed, and the power to blow the heater or fan does not work. There are two cracks in the dash. The spring on the ash tray door does not work but you can open and close the lid fine. The tires need to be replaced, and there is one lug nut on the front passenger side missing. There is a crack on the right side of the clear plastic cover over the speedometer/tachometer cluster. The odometer and speedometer do not work, I do not know if it is just a new cable needed. The car looks to be originally white on the exterior and painted red. There are chips out of the paint in some areas which most have been covered with touch up paint, but obvious, such as on the rear bumper area, one rear tail light (in the hole), and what looks like the clear coat peeling off around the top of the back passenger's side fender and along the top of the back window which I was told could be buffed out but never tried as my plan was to patch the areas in need of repainting and just have an over spray in the same red color done. There is also the common separation of the rear bumpier from the back of the car which most people I have seen either replace the rear end with a spoiler or when they have the car painted they fill this in to look seamless. The hood opens and closes great, it does not hit the fenders at all. One of the air conditioning vents on top of the gauges needs to be repaired or replaced. There is a chip on the upper front side of the drivers window. The leather boot around the gear shift has separated a little from the housing, needs to be repaired. Inside of both doors where they close are scrapes from the doors closing, I repaired the doors so they do not sag anymore, this should not happen again. The headlights go up and down no problem, though they aren't super fast. I put a new master cylinder on the car recently. The pictures show the glove box is open, there is nothing wrong with it opening or closing, I took the picture to show the inside. There is paint missing from being rubbed inside the side mirror housing on both sides. This is not a salvage titled car, it has a clear title. The car is not currently registered in the state of California or smoged. It is owed registration for 2012, 2013, and 2014 and needs a smog check if you are in California. The registration fee in 2011 was $59.00 here in California. So an estimate of what is owed would be $177 plus fees which I do not know but would estimate to be $200 to $300. When I filed my state income tax this year they garnished $142.00 which I assume went towards the registration fees owed on the car, I can't confirm this as I received no letter stating where it went only that the state took the refund. I have adjusted the price to reflect the estimate cost of registration for California. I am not aware if the car is taken to another state what happens to the fees or if they are owed. The car has not sat in the garage for 3 years, I have used it in my neighborhood to run around the block to keep it maintained. The car does need some work, but I hope you can see it is not extensive, minor really if you enjoy it, and what I like to do when I buy Corvettes in these years is fix exactly what this car needs. This would also be a great father son project, which is what I originally picked this one up for and to make it my daily driver. Like I said I have bought a few of the C3s sand a slew of C4s and I get disappointed to find out after I bought it off an online auction that they didn't detail out the issues with the car. The vehicle is to be picked up only, either by the buyer or a shipping company provided by the buyer and fees for shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. The car is to be sold "as is" and I think I have pretty much covered everything on the car that I know about, and the pictures supplied should show the interior, exterior, and what I have been describing in this auction, but if you have any further questions please contact me and I will be glad to get back to you. Again any reasonable offer will be accepted so go ahead and submit an offer and let's see if we can strike a deal on this Corvette!

Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Chevy to show redesigned Captiva in Geneva, will it come to US rental lots?

Wed, 27 Feb 2013

Unless you're renting a car or driving through Orlando, Florida (the rental car capital of the US), you'll probably never see a Chevrolet Captiva - the rebadged, fleet-only version of the old Saturn Vue - on our roads, but this crossover is popular in many other parts of the world. As such, Chevrolet announced that the Captiva will be getting an update for 2013, which will be unveiled next week at the Geneva Motor Show.
Coming off a pretty extensive refresh in 2011, the 2013 model year will bring even more changes to the Captiva like LED taillights, new 18-inch wheels and revised fascias with a new grille and fog lights up front and inset chrome exhaust outlets at the rear. New interior features include heated rear seats, dual-zone climate control as well as available options on some of the upper trim levels such as leather seating and keyless entry and start. We have yet to hear back from Chevrolet as to whether or not the updated Captiva will be making its way to a rental lot near you, as the model is only available in the US to fleet buyers.
Alongside the updated Captiva, Chevy is also showing off its new Trax in Europe, where the subcompact crossover will go on sale this spring. GM's press release for these two Geneva-bound models is posted below.

Chevrolet Captiva looks mildly refreshed and ready for family duty

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

We showed you Chevrolet's major debut yesterday, the 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible, but General Motors is making a big push for Bowtie consideration in Europe, so it's also introducing the updated Captiva crossover here at the Geneva Motor Show.
While still based on the same platform as North America's fleet-only Captiva Sport (which is effectively a rebadged Saturn Vue), the Captiva is available in both five- and seven-seat iterations, and it looks far more modern. That's particularly the case with this updated model, which features revamped front- and rear ends that include restyled bumpers, grilles and LED taillamps, among other changes.
As before, the midsize Theta-platform CUV will be available in both front- and all-wheel drive, and is expected to carry a range of four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Important US programming note: Chevrolet sources tell us that America's Captiva Sport will not receive these updates.
