Caprice Classic

1974

A real time-warp find!

This is a really authentic, great condition Caprice Classic sedan with the 400 cubic inch V8. The car is very original in all aspects and is a rare and wonderful find. Although not considered a "collectable" by purist standards, its sheer condition makes her so. Nothing has been restored on this car.

This is a genuine 1 owner car that spent its whole life in Illinois stored indoors and showing a very modest 69,000 miles. Mind you, so pristine, she looks like 40,000 miles. It was purchased new by then Chief of Police of a northern Chicagoland suburb and was never driven in the snow. The underside is immaculate. It comes with its original operating manual, owner ID card and documentation.

Finished in "Medium Dark Green" metallic with Light green cloth interior and a set of tailored plastic seat covers that have been in place since the car was new! (only the driver seat cushion was removed recently). The seat covers are a testament to its loving ownership and all so 1970's!

The car has been recently gone over by a local work-shop and everything is in good operating condition. The big V8 engine runs smooth and powerful - purring at idle. Brakes are good and the car stops sure. All features and functions work well with the heater hot and A/C ice cold. Windows, seat adjustment, seat belts, wipers, exterior and interior lights work as they should. I drove this car over the end of summer on a daily basis and is simply a delight to cruise. She never missed a beat!

The body is entirely rust free and the underside is clean. The whole car is very straight, accident free and has never had any body repair. This is evidenced by the original factory stickers and markings on the inside edges and under the hood. The car was "Ziebart" rust proof treated from new and it shows! The paint looks to be original and is nice. There are nicks, chips and some scratches but nothing major. There are no side door dings! It is very shiny, consistent and simply looks great from close and afar. Although not perfect paint, VERY impressive for a 40 year old car!

All rubber, glass and trim fixtures are in wonderful condition without any signs of fading, marks or scratches. The right front hubcap has a small brush mark and there may be the odd scuff here and there. All very minor stuff. The bumpers and side mouldings are virtually prefect.

The interior is absolutely fantastic! It is 100% original and not a single aspect has been restored. EVERYTHING is factory original. This is the hall mark of this Caprice Classic and makes the car look like she is only a couple of years old. Finished in a light green cloth, she looks incredibly sharp. The dash is prefect without any sun-fading or cracking. All the vinyl, faux wood and chrome finishings are like new. The dash cluster is like new. In fact the whole dash looks like new! The steering wheel is perfect without a single crack. The fabric seats are in simply amazing presentation and condition, totally clean and without even a thread pulled. The plastic covering has made sure of this and although I was dying to remove them, I decided to leave this decision for the next owner to contemplate. Even the floors have been covered by plastic mats (supplied in trunk). Carpets, door panels, handles, switches, knobs and every little item is perfect. The headliner is indeed perfect. I reiterate, everything is factory original and nothing has been redone - and yet it all looks like brand new. The interior is without doubt a 9.999999 out of 10. Just stunning.

The car all round is very original in all respects. Sporting original hubcaps on original rims with elegant whitewall tyres. The car has its original cross-ply spares and comes with jack and original operating manual.

Overall, this Caprice Classic is an excellent example. Although not a "show car" by true definition, it certainly ranks very high in its current collectible condition. You could certainly drive her with pride as-is to your next GM/Chevy meet and attract a lot of attention. It ranks a clear 9-out-of-10 driver condition and would make a great low-cost investment for any 70s car collection.

Wikipedia:

The Caprice was renamed the Caprice Classic for 1973, a year highlighted by a new cross-hatch grille over the new 5 mph (8 km/h) energy absorbing front bumper and revised square taillights, again mounted in the bumper. Increasingly stringent emission standards added EGR valves to engines, and accordingly horsepower figures continued to drop. The standard Turbo-Fire 400 cu in (6.6 L) two-barrel was now rated at 150 hp (112 kW) while the only optional engine was the Turbo-Jet 454 cu in (7.4 L) V8 produced 245 hp (183 kW) with dual exhaust (215 hp (160 kW) with single exhaust used in station wagons).

The 1974 models featured a new grille. The taillights were moved above the new 5 mph (8 km/h) rear bumper. New thick "B" pillars and fixed rear quarter opera windows were new on two-door coupes, which essentially eliminated pillar-less hardtop design much like the GM intermediates did the previous year. Other body styles including the four-door pillared and hardtop sedans, convertible and Estate Wagon were carried over with only minor changes from 1973. New to the engine roster was a four-barrel version of the small block 400 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8 rated at 180 hp (134 kW) (which was the standard engine on wagons and all cars sold in California, optional on other models in 49 states). All other engines were carried over from 1973 although the 454 Turbo Jet lost 10 horsepower (7.5 kW), now rated at 235 hp (175 kW) Also new for 1974 were integrated lap and shoulder seat belts and the unpopular "interlock" system that required the driver and front seat passengers to fasten seat belts in order to start the vehicle. The interlock mandate received so much public outcry that Congress rescinded it shortly after the introduction of the 1975 models.

This Caprice is part of a private collection. I am not a broker or retail-style car dealer; although licensed, I am a professional car collector of some 30 years with considerable experience and knowledge of British and European Cars. I have a long standing reputation being associated with Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor cars which I take seriously. I take a lot of pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them. However, auctions are not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid or make an offer and I openly welcome any potential buyer to come and personally inspect the car. Once you bid or make an offer, you are doing so to buy WITHOUT conditions. A $1500.00 deposit (non-refundable) is required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal. The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire. I cannot accept PayPal for the balance unless you are willing to meet the cost of transfer fees. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. All payments are non-refundable. Payments as described above form an important part of this purchase contract and so, if all the funds are not received as outlined above, I reserve the right to terminate the transaction without notice. If there has been any deposit or other part payments received and I elect to terminate the contract, I reserve the right to keep any such deposits or payments and resell the vehicle to another bidder or interested party or re-list the vehicle at any time. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a national and worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost.

As a collector and experienced restorer of classic cars, I make every effort to bring my cars to a very high standard. Unless specifically stated, the car is not of show standard but of good quality "driver" condition. Please understand, the very nature of these classics is such that it is not always possible to attend to every single item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked an item. Please note, fitted radio/stereo systems are usually subject to upgrade by purchasers so I do not ensure operation of these. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 40 years old. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition:

The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is" with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment and accuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible for errors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction.  Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle. Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end. Also, you must remember that this is a classic +/-40 year old vehicle, and while it is up to you, I do not recommend that you just “hop in and drive it across the country”.  At least, I have never done that.  I have always professionally transported the cars in enclosed carriers from where I bought them to my home.

PLEASE; IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ABIDE BY THESE TERMS, MESSGAE ME BEFORE YOU BID AS, RESPECTFULLY, THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Texas sues GM, saying it tricked customers into sharing driving data sold to insurers

Wed, Aug 14 2024

Texas filed a lawsuit Tuesday against GM over years of alleged abuse of customers' data and trust. New car owners were presented with a "confusing and highly misleading" process that was implied to be for their safety, but "was no more than a deceptively designed sales flow" that surrendered their data for GM to sell. The suit contends that at no point was selling driving data ever even suggested as a possibility, putting GM in violation of the state's consumer protection laws. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is seeking a jury trial and at least $10,000 per offense (every GM car sold in the state since 2015) and a hefty add-on of $250,000 in cases where the victim was over 65. Texas seems to be flying high after a recent $1.4 billion settlement from Meta over other privacy concerns. This may well be a way to solve any pending budgetary issues in the Lone Star State.

Nissan Leaf has 2nd-best sales month ever, Chevy Volt does a 2013 repeat [UPDATE]

Tue, Apr 1 2014

UPDATE: The official press release says that "Volt [sales were] up 7 percent," but Randy Fox let AutoblogGreen know that this is simply due to a change in the fleet/retail mix between March 2013 and 2014. The actual number sold was exactly the same in the two months. A month ago, Nissan's director of EV sales and marketing, Toby Perry, said he expected to see the Leaf's sales momentum continue into March. It wasn't a big leap, since January and February were slow sales months in 2013 (around 640 each) before a big climb to 2,200 in March. In 2014, the first two months of the year were better (around 1,300 each) but Nissan can still be happy that the Leaf just had the best March ever and its second-highest sales month ever, with 2,507 sold. That's a 12.1 percent increase from 2013 and Perry said in a statement to AutoblogGreen that one reason is all of the buyers who are becoming evangelists for the vehicle. "We've also seen an increase in showroom traffic as we enhanced our marketing presence in March," he said. Nissan pointed to cities like Washington, DC, Raleigh-Durham, NC and urban areas in Texas as strong Leaf markets last month. On the Chevy Volt front, January and February were also slow months in 2014, down roughly half from the 2,000-ish the plug-in hybrid was selling at the end of 2013. For 2014, sales were up slightly from the first two months of the year and Chevy spokesman Randy Fox told AutoblogGreen that the March number was "pretty flat, year-over-year." Even with that warning, we were surprised to see the total come in at 1,478. Why's that? Because the total for March 2013 was ... 1,478. So, yeah, that's pretty steady even if there were 26 selling days in March period this year compared to 27 last year. As always, our more complete report of last month's green car sales will be coming soon. News Source: General Motors, Nissan Green Chevrolet GM Nissan Electric Hybrid PHEV ev sales

Feds open investigation into Chevy Express, Ford Freestar rust issues

Wed, 28 Dec 2011

'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.
