Z10 Camaro Although they frequently are identified as “pace car coupes,” the 1969 Camaro Z10s are not merely hardtop versions of the popular Indy pace car replicas. The truth is, they’re even more rare (between 100 and 200 were built), and were built for a very limited region in the southwest US (although one was sold new in Tennessee). They did, of course, receive the same Dover White paint job featuring Hugger Orange stripes, and even the SS396 cars like this one here, used a matching white tail panel in place of the big block’s usual blacked-out piece. With a high-quality restoration and a cowl tag that has never been removed, this is a real-deal Z10 car, and is one of the rarest of all 1969 Camaro’s ever produced. All Z10 coupes were painted code 50 Dover White with Hugger Orange stripes with matching white rocker panels. They also all came standard with the D80 spoilers, ZJ7 rally wheels, ZL2 cowl induction hood, Z22 Rally Sport package, and Z27 Super Sport package. All Z10’s built in the Norwood Plant received the Z10 stamp on their cowl tags, making them some of the easiest Camaro’s to document. This has always been a solid, clean car. It has received a “frame off” 4 year restoration. Recently the engine and engine bay has been freshened up with period correct components including a rebuilt numbers matching Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and looks outstanding. The Z10s received all the usual Camaro trim; however, this particular model received a special order endura front bumper and limited production chambered exhaust. (Many States banned this option in mid 1969 due to the loud exhaust). All Z10s were also RS/SS cars, so this one carries a correct SS grille with working vacuum actuated hidden RS headlights, the special white rocker panels, and even the Hugger Orange pin stripes that delineate front and rear fender lines, a detail that many restorations leave out. The stainless on this car has been polished, and it carries the optional gill inserts ahead of the rear wheels. A vast majority of the Z10s were small block cars, however this model is equipped with a period correct L34 350 horsepower 396 cubic inch engine. While the standard transmission was a 3-speed manual, any option you could get on a regular Camaro was available on the Z10s, and as a result this one sports a period correct M21 4-speed manual driving a heavy duty 12-bolt posi rear end. The chassis is nicely finished, with satin black floors and rebuilt stock suspensions fore and aft, including correct reproduction spiral shocks front and back. A new gas tank and reproduction chambered exhaust have been also recently installed. For years, nobody believed that the Z10s even existed. They’d show up now and again, but most people—even experts—simply assumed someone had built it themselves after seeing a pace car and being inspired. With a little digging, evidence started to emerge and now these cars are reliably documented. This Car is included in the Z10 Registry which lists about 70 cars. There’s no question that they’re uncommon, and are among the rarest of all 69 Camaros. Clones are fairly common. This one is unquestionably the real deal and it has been beautifully restored to highly accurate condition. The glove box carries the signature of Mario Andretti the winner of the 1969 Indianapolis 500. I will let the photos tell the rest! This vehicle is not perfect but extremely well done.As with any vehicle of this age it is sold as is with no warranties implied or offered.

Recharge Wrap-up: Batty battery covers, Mercedes at Silvretta, new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid available in 2015
Tue, Jul 8 2014Apparently, Chevrolet Volt battery covers make suitable homes for bats. As part of an Eagle Scout project, Matthew Netherland created 30 bat houses out of scrapped Volt battery covers donated by Chevy. 22 of the bat houses will be set up near hydroelectric dams in Michigan. Each bat house will accommodate 100 bats, and divert the scrapped materials from the landfill. The battery covers also make great nesting boxes for wood ducks, which General Motors has previously set up at its Milford, Michigan Proving Ground. Last weekend was the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, which saw emissions-free vehicles cross the Montafon Mountains in Austria, including cars from Mercedes-Benz. These cars included the B-Class Electric Drive, B-Class F-Cell, SLS AMG Electric Drive and even the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. Also on hand for the Silvretta Classic Rally was a V8-powered C111, a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC and 300 SL Roadster. Read more in the press release, below. The average window sticker ratings from vehicles sold in June dropped slightly from 25.6 mpg in May. The year started at 24.9 mpg in January, and hasn't dropped below 25 mpg since.
Recharge Wrap-up: BYD unveils 60-ft electric bus, Honda sticking with hybrids in Europe
Thu, Oct 16 2014BYD has debuted a 60-foot electric bus at the American Public Transportation Association Expo in Houston, TX. The Lancaster bus, as it is called, has a 120-passenger capacity and can drive over 170 miles on a single charge. The articulated bus features low floors and no steps, thanks to in-wheel hub motors. BYD also displayed a 40-foot electric bus that drove the 1,500 miles to the show under its own power (recharging along the way, of course). Read more in the press release below. Honda says it will continue to sell hybrids in Europe, despite the fact that it has stopped selling the CR-Z and Insight due to slow sales. "Our focus at the moment is on our 1.6-liter diesel but we haven't forgotten about hybrid technology," says Honda Europe's Philip Ross. Honda will sell the next-generation Fit (badged as the Jazz) in Europe when it launches next summer, and will sell the next-gen hybrid version beginning in 2016. Honda sold 4,500 of the Jazz hybrid in Europe last year. Read more at Automotive News. XL Hybrids is selling its XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System in California. NRG eVgo has finished installing 60 charging stations at the Sony Pictures Entertainment studio lot and offices in Culver City, California. The Level 2 chargers, which will be managed by NRG eVgo, allow employees to charge their EVs during the workday. An average of 90 EVs and PHEVs park at the studio headquarters every day, thanks in part to Sony Pictures' Alternative Vehicles Incentive program for its employees. Learn more in the press release below. Pennsylvania's Public Utility Commission will allow operators of EV charging stations to set prices based on kilowatt hour usage. This change ensures that drivers pay for the actual energy they use, rather than the time they spend charging, since different cars can charge at different speeds. Car Charging Group has already begun using the per-kWh fee structure at its charging stations throughout the state. Other states that allow kWh pricing are California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Virginia and Washington. Read more in the press release below.
GM finds steering flaw, decides it doesn't warrant a recall
Tue, Apr 14 2015Guess what? General Motors is back in the spotlight for not recalling something. This time, though, not only does the company have an argument against a recall campaign, but its position is supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to The New York Times, over 50 owners of GM vehicles have reported instances of stuck or seized steering after driving long distances without moving the wheel. One owner complained to NHTSA that the "locked" steering of their 2013 Buick Verano caused a collision with a concrete barrier in a construction zone. Along with the 2013 to 2014 model year Verano sedans, Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu sedans are also affected. Considering the popularity of those models, GM needs to have a reason for not issuing a recall, right? "Based on a very low rate of occurrence – ranging from less than one half to less than two incidents per thousand vehicles – and the fact that the condition is remedied when the wheel is turned, GM determined this was not a safety issue," spokesman Alan Adler told The Times. The company has, however, issued a technical service bulletin for owners that complain of the problem. The fix is nothing more than a software update that is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles from new. NHTSA cited GM's actions, along with descriptions of the problems from customers, in its decision not to issue a recall, with spokeswoman Catherine Howden saying, "the symptoms described would be a brief, perceptible change in steering feel that has little to no effect on the driver's ability to safely steer the vehicle." "When terms like 'notchy,' 'stick,' 'slip' or 'feel' are used, it does not indicate a meaningful increase in steering effort," Howden told The Times via email. What do you think? Is GM in the wrong here? Should there be a recall, or is the issue so limited as to not warrant one? Have your say in Comments.
