1981 Chevy C10 Shortbed Scottsdale 5.7l Corvette Tpi Engine And Transmission on 2040-cars
Anaheim, California, United States
I bought this 1981 Chevy C10 shortbed about 20 years ago. It is the Scottsdale model, which is below the Silverado. It was a very clean truck with low mileage, about 40k, as I remember. It had a 305 engine and Turbo 350 transmission. It ran fine, but lacked power, plus it did not get very good gas mileage, about 14 on the road. I replaced the engine with a 350 and the transmission with a 700R4, overdrive. The performance was much better, as was the mpg. I have never driven the truck very much, other than on trips. We drove it to Washington to tow back a 55 Tbird I had purchased on e-bay. Another time to northern CA for a 57 Ford station wagon, that I wound up driving back as U-Haul would not rent me a car trailer for a half ton truck. A friend of mine had a tow company and about 15 years ago had a wrecked 90 Corvette in his yard. He sold me the L98 tpi engine and 700r trans out of it. It had struck a pole backwards, totaling out the rear. I kept this engine and trans for a couple of years, with the plan of putting it in the truck. In California, we have a bi-annual smog inspection where we have to get a smog certificate before we can renew our registration every other year for cars newer than 1974. In the 90’s the legislature passed a law that vehicles over 30 years old would not be required to do the bi-annual smog check. So, in 2009, after what I thought was the last smog inspection, I changed to engine and transmission to the ones I had taken out of the Corvette using a Painless Wiring kit. I had to install a high pressure in-line fuel pump and filter and return lines to the tanks. Unfortunately, CA changed their minds and the law, again required the bi-annual inspection. The next time my registration came due, I had to go to the California Vehicle Inspection Referee, to show the engine change. After a couple of trips to the referee, I was given a new smog sticker for the engine change. This sticker is on the door and shows the car to be smogged as a 1991 Chevy. I had taken the truck to Turbo City where a custom chip was made for the computer. I have had the truck smog checked several times since then. The engine is a stock Corvette 350 c.i. tuned port injection engine with speed density (MAP) sensor. I freshened it up with new main and rod bearings and timing chain. I also replaced the stock L98 tpi cam with a roller cam out of a Chevy Ram Jet crate motor. I did not want to have problems with the computer, nor smog check, and this cam works. The stock tpi system would run out of air over 4,000 rpm, so I replaced the intake system with Edelbrock siamesed runners and intake manifold. The plenum was enlarged to match the runners and I bought a 58mm throttle body. To add a little more power, I installed new roller rockers, 1.6:1 on the intake and 1.5:1 on the exhaust. I had to buy taller valve covers to clear the roller rockers. It uses the stock Corvette exhaust manifolds, because of the smog police, but are almost like block hugger headers. To get the Corvette 700r4 trans to work, I had to find a special tail housing with a transmission mounting boss, as the Corvette uses a large torque tube attaching it to the rear end. My wife and I take trips to Texas where she looks for antiques. Each time we went, she would fill whatever car we drove, so I suggested that the next time we went on such a buying trip, we take the truck. Originally the truck had a canvas tonneau cover that snapped to the sides of the bed, which I still have. I found a camper shell for the truck. We have made several trips to Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington with the truck. The most recent was late last year. These are the only times that any mileage is put on the truck, which now shows about 88k, which is original as far as I know. I am confident that the mileage was correct when I bought it. The truck now gets close to 20 mpg on the highway, if you drive conservatively. The truck has dual side tanks, holding 16 gallons each. The dash switch for the tanks works and also changes the gauge to the tank being used. The truck has power steering, with the Corvette pump and remote reservoir. It has power disc brakes and air conditioning. The a/c works fine and still uses R12 gas. It will leak down some over the winter and I have to top it off before my wife will go anywhere in it. It does not have power windows, nor power door locks. It has the original 15x8 Rally wheels. The front tires are a year old, and the rears are over 10, but still have good tread. It is an original California truck as it has the old style blue with yellow numbered license plates issued to it when new. The truck has been painted twice for me. The last time was 2 years ago. I had the white camper painted the same pewter gray as the truck. There was a small amount of rust in the rear area behind one of the rear tires, and that was all the rust. I know that it has not been in an accident since I have had it and I never found any signs of accident damage, and I have been all over this truck many times. I really had no plans to sell the truck as it works great for my needs, but things change. I am looking to downsize and instead of having a daily driver and a weekend truck, I want to have just one vehicle. I would not hesitate to drive this truck anywhere in the US. It has been a great truck for me. If no one meets my reserve, I will just keep it. Please ask any questions you may have, giving me enough time to respond. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding |

Recharge Wrap-up: Batty battery covers, Mercedes at Silvretta, new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid available in 2015
Tue, Jul 8 2014Apparently, Chevrolet Volt battery covers make suitable homes for bats. As part of an Eagle Scout project, Matthew Netherland created 30 bat houses out of scrapped Volt battery covers donated by Chevy. 22 of the bat houses will be set up near hydroelectric dams in Michigan. Each bat house will accommodate 100 bats, and divert the scrapped materials from the landfill. The battery covers also make great nesting boxes for wood ducks, which General Motors has previously set up at its Milford, Michigan Proving Ground. Last weekend was the Silvretta E-Auto Rally, which saw emissions-free vehicles cross the Montafon Mountains in Austria, including cars from Mercedes-Benz. These cars included the B-Class Electric Drive, B-Class F-Cell, SLS AMG Electric Drive and even the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. Also on hand for the Silvretta Classic Rally was a V8-powered C111, a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC and 300 SL Roadster. Read more in the press release, below. BMW has finalized pricing for the i8 in the US at $135,700 (plus $925 in destination charges). In addition to the base price tag, which we've known for a while, BMW Blog has the complete pricing guide with options and packages. Most of the i8 orders were the Pure Impulse World package, which includes various aesthetic upgrades. It also provides membership to the BMW i Pure Impulse Program, which allows you to "to enjoy innovative ideas and trends in a variety of areas, including home styling, culture, gourmet gastronomy, design and many more." Head over to BMW Blog for more information. The new generation of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will arrive later than the rest of the model lineup, confirms Car and Driver. While the gas-powered Sonatas get updated now for the 2015 model year, the Hybrid remains unchanged until late this year or early 2015, when it will arrive as a 2016 model. Hyundai is offering a 2015 Sonata Eco edition, but with 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway (32 combined), it's not quite as appealing as the current Sonata Hybrid's 36/40/38 figures. Read more here. In June, average US fuel economy was 25.5 miles per gallon, making it the fifth straight month above 25 mpg, according to University of Michigan. The average window sticker ratings from vehicles sold in June dropped slightly from 25.6 mpg in May. The year started at 24.9 mpg in January, and hasn't dropped below 25 mpg since.
10 of 18 midsize SUVs earn 'good' IIHS side impact safety rating
Wed, May 18 2022It's not terribly surprising that midsize SUVs earned better safety ratings than small SUVs in the latest side-impact tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Just how much better they scored, on the other hand, certainly raises an eyebrow. Ten out of 18 midsize SUVs earned the highest rating of 'good' in the stringent new test, altered for vehicles starting with the 2020 model year with a heavier barrier (4,200 pounds) that moves at a higher speed (37 miles per hour) and is fitted with a hard honeycomb frontal structure. By way of contrast, just one out of of 20 small SUVs earned a 'good' score. SUVs that receiving 'good' scores were the Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Volkswagen ID.4. For EV fans, it's worth noting the ID.4 was the only electric vehicle included in the test. The Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse scraped away with 'acceptable' ratings while the Honda Passport, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Wrangler 4-door, Kia Telluride and Nissan Murano were deemed merely 'marginal' in the tough new test. Only two models — the Mazda CX-9 and Volkswagen ID.4 — earned a "Good" rating in every test category. Interestingly, the Jeep Wrangler would have scored a 'good' rating if it were equipped with side airbags for the rear seating positions. It would likely be an engineering challenge to equip its removable top and/or doors with airbags, but the lack of that safety feature allowed the head of the rear passenger dummy to hit the vertical support of the top. Otherwise, the Wrangler scored good ratings across the board. The new Ford Bronco, which makes more allowances for side-impact safety, has not yet been tested. The popular Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride SUVs stand out in the test with 'poor' ratings for driver pelvis injuries. The Nissan Murano, a vehicle last redesigned for the 2015 model year, was the only vehicle tested that received a 'poor' rating for its structure and safety cage. Videos of the tests of 12 of these 18 SUVs can be found on the IIHS' YouTube page. Jay Leno gets pulled over while roaring in a Corvette Z06 convertible
Tue, Jan 6 2015No one is above the law, even if that person is a certain silver-haired auto enthusiast with a popular weekly video series about the cars in his garage. This week, Jay Leno experiences the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z06, but he also gets to have a meeting with some of California's Finest immediately after a high-speed blast. As opposed to the full-bore Z06 coupe with the seven-speed manual, Leno gets behind the wheel of the slightly heavier convertible version with the eight-speed auto. Being a droptop doesn't bother him too much, but Leno makes it obvious he wishes that he could be shifting for himself. Even if the auto is technically quicker, Leno says that swapping gears gives him something to do while driving. Of course, one of the major advantages of the convertible is the ability to listen to the Z06's thumping V8 unimpeded. With 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque from 6.2-liters of supercharged muscle, it already puts down impressive numbers, but the sound might just be the best part of all. Around town, the 'Vette is quiet enough to easily blend in with the rest of traffic. However, tip the throttle down and the valves in the exhaust open up to turn the engine into roaring monster. Be careful where you make this thing howl, though, because it's pretty easy for the police to take notice. The host finds that out the hard way in this week's episode of Jay Leno's Garage.
