SELLER REMARKS |
|
For those of you looking for a clean early V8 Chevy, one that has that old-fashioned look but a few invisible upgrades that don't change the car's personality, and a love for a quintessential 1950s look, then perhaps this 1955 Bel Air hardtop is for you. It breaks no new ground, it isn't radical, and it doesn't reinvent the wheel. Instead it's a very clean, simple cruiser that has a crisp-running small block and a great '50s vibe.
The light yellow and white combination on this Bel Air will stand out clearly from all the bright red or black resto-mods running around out there. The cowl tag is a little vague on the original color, suggesting this car was a special order, but the light yellow with a white top looks quite authentic for 1955 and the sheetmetal underneath stands up to scrutiny. It's not perfect, of course, showing some signs of age and use, but if you want a car that you can get in and drive without a second thought or a nervous glance at the clouds overhead, then this is an ideal choice. There's a wonderful shine that will really respond to the regular wax jobs you'll be giving it and the fit of the bodywork is quite good overall. The goal was a very correct-looking 1955 Chevy, and that's what they got with all the stock trim still in place, shiny chrome bumpers, and factory ornaments like the little V8 badges under the taillights remain intact.
The white interior is just a few months old and gleams with brand new upholstery in the traditional pleated style. The same white vinyl is used on the door and side panels, and with dark carpets on the floor, it has a traditional and very stylish look. A few body-colored accents such as the window garnish moldings and dashboard add some contrast. Subtle upgrades like the late-model tilt steering column with leather-wrapped wheel and an AM/FM stereo radio with speakers on the rear package shelf are neatly integrated into the design and don't stand out at a glance. The factory instruments monitor the basics, but you'll note that there are now three gears in the automatic shifter quadrant and white-faced auxiliary gauges under the dash monitor the engine's vitals. Obviously, there's virtually zero wear anywhere inside, and the trunk was not neglected, as it carries fitted carpets and a contrasting white spare tire cover.
No surprises under the hood, where you'll find a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8, and it fits like it was born there. A late-model block was rebuilt and given an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb and a set of headers, so it has plenty of punch off the line. Edelbrock also supplied the chrome dress-up kit and with a big aluminum radiator up front, this car is happy in traffic or out on the open road. A TH350 3-speed automatic transmission feeds the stock rear end, which has a set of short gears that make it feel quite quick around town. A Camaro front clip adds power disc brakes and a great-sounding dual exhaust system produces smiles every time you turn the key. Stock steel wheels with hubcaps wear 215/75/15 whitewall radials that perfectly capture the 1950s look with more modern ride and handling.
A tidy shoebox Chevy, this '55 Bel Air is exactly the car you want for having fun but not worrying about the little stuff. Call today!

During the 1970s and into the 1980s, each member of the Detroit Big Three imported Japanese small pickups and sold them with Ford (Mazda Proceed), Dodge/Plymouth (Mitsubishi Forte), or Chevrolet (Isuzu Faster) badges here. Ford developed the Ranger and killed the Courier for 1983 (though Americans could still buy the Mazda-badged version all the way through 1993), while The General axed the LUV after the S-10 debuted in the 1982 model year. Isuzu sold the same truck as the P'up through 1987, though, and we might as well follow up our recent P'up Junkyard Gem with its LUV predecessor. LUV stood for Light Utility Vehicle, and I've managed to spot a handful in the boneyards over the years. This one now resides in a yard in northeastern Colorado. The Mikado trim package included striped seat upholstery and a sporty steering wheel, plus these cool dash badges. As far as I can tell, no LUV Mikado advertising featured any Gilbert and Sullivan tunes. This one is fairly rusty for Front Range Colorado, and it has endured a bed swap from some other small truck. The engine is the 75-horse Isuzu 1.8-liter. Members of this engine family went into everything from Chevy Chevettes to Isuzu Troopers in the United States. Very unusually for a small pickup during the Malaise Era, this one has a luxurious automatic transmission. Acceleration must have been a leisurely affair in this truck. Air conditioning? Unheard of! Someone stuck every one of their lunchtime apple stickers on the driver's door. After 41 years of work, this truck is done. Come on strong in a LUV of your own!

The end of summer seems to inspire people to go out and buy a lot of plug-in vehicles. Last year, for example, the Chevy Volt had its best month ever in August, with 3,351 sales. This year, the Nissan Leaf is going up to the winner's podium, setting its own best-ever record with 3,186 units sold. This beats the Leaf's previous record by 69 vehicles. This beats the Leaf's previous record of 3,117 set in May 2014 by 69 vehicles and is up 31.7 percent from August 2013. Nissan is once again quick to remind us that the popular EV's record sales streak has now been extended to 18 months in a row. This record is simply noting that the current month, in this case August, had the highest sales that that month has ever seen in the US. Over all, US Leaf sales are up 34.1 percent so far this year. In a prepared statement, Nissan's director of Leaf sales and infrastructure, Brendan Jones, said that the Leaf is selling well on both coasts, including cities like Raleigh, Boston and Washington, DC. "It's what we call the 'cul-de-sac phenomenon,' where once someone in a community buys a Leaf, then friends, family, co-workers and neighbors see the benefits of this fun-to-drive electric vehicle firsthand and are sold on the idea of going electric," he said. The Volt also had a good month - its best of 2014 by almost 500 sales – but the 2,511 Volt sales still represent a drop of 25.1 percent from the excellent sales the Volt had this time last year. In fact, August 2014 represents the Volt's best sales month since, well, August 2013. Apparently, there's just something about the end of summer. As always, we are working on our in-depth round-up of green car sales across the country and will have that up soon.

If you've been hoping for General Motors to come out swinging at the Ford F-150 Raptor, we've had some tantalizing news for you of late. Last month we brought you a report that indicated GM has trademarked the name "Z71 Trail Boss," suggesting a potential hardcore off-roader. Now it seems the General has filed for a potentially even better name. That name, as our friends over at GM Authority have discovered, is "Badlands." The application, filed on February 16, indicates that it's for a truck, but of course it doesn't specify just what form it would take... or for that matter, under which division it would fall. So we could, in theory, be looking at the nameplate for a Raptor rival from Chevy or GMC (like the 2011 Sierra All Terrain HD concept pictured here), or for some other trim level, a concept truck, a special edition... just about anything. Heck, it could be for a Vauxhall, Opel or Holden for all we know at this point. Or GM could choose not to use it on anything at all, but here's hoping it'll emerge as something awesome in US showrooms sometime soon.
