1958 Chevrolet Bel Air

Sport Coupe (2-door hardtop)

This is a nice Chevrolet Bel Air 2-door hardtop.  It is powered by a Chevy 350 cu. in. V-8 with an Edelbrock four barrel carburetor and intake manifold.  The transmission is a stock 3 speed manual with column shift; the clutch is good and tight.

The interior is custom brown naugahyde with tan herringbone cloth inserts and the original upholstery trim.  It rides on BF Goodrich TA radials and Cragar wheels.  It is a GREAT driver!  I've drive it from Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula all the way to Sacramento, California without a bit of trouble, and it was a smooth ride.

I bought this car about eight years ago on eBay - sight unseen.  It was a littler rougher than it looked in the pictures.  Since then, I've done and had a lot of work done over the years to make it as nice as it is now.  Here is a list:

  • The floor pans and trunk had some rust, which I ground down, painted with POR 13 and patched with fiberglasss.  It was not so bad that I considered it necessary to remove and replace with patch panels.
  • I've had some mechanical improvements done including replacing the cam and lifters, replacing both front and rear coil springs, installed rear air-shocks, replaced the gas tank, installed a new electric fuel pump, installed a new heater core and had the heater control valve  rebuilt, and had a new exhaust system with glass pack mufflers installed.  I also installed a new under dash wiring loom and fuse box.
  • With the exception of the upholstery, I have completely gone through the interior including having the dash and interior trim repainted to match the Bronze paint color, replaced all window and door handles, installed new dash trim/bezels/glove box/door threshold, replaced the firewall pad and kick panels, installed a new carpet kit and sound insulation over the floorboards, replaced the trunk mat and panels, and installed a new made to fit AM/FM radio with a split front stereo speaker in the dash which is set up for iPod on the auziliary band.
  • I replaced the wind wing and side door glass and frames, and replaced the rubber windshield and rear window seals.

I've seen two other '58 Chevy Sport Coupes for sale in the last year or so that look just like my car including paint color, tires, and rims; they're both frame-off restorations and the owners were seeking $50,000+/-.  I also saw one recently that is a project car and the owner has a "buy it now" price of $13,850.  My car is very well "buy it now" priced at $16,500.  It is not a high-dollar show car for the following reasons:

  • The exterior paint job looks great from 10+ feet away, but whoever painted it didn't put enough time and energy preparing the car for painting.  The panels are not laser straight and some sanding swirls are noticeable on the trunk lid around the lock.
  • Some of the stainless trim is dented.
  • I failed to replace the front windshield when I had the rubber replaced, and some hazing is noticable around the edges.  Also, I have not been able to find new rear quarter window glass with frames; the frames are pitted.
  • I bought and improved the car to be a good looking "driver".

So, you are bidding on a reasonably priced, good looking, and reliable 1958 Chevy Sport Coupe.  I've had a lot of fun with it, but I have a couple of other toy cars and I'm too busy as a self-employed person to drive all three of them.

If you have questions, I can be reached at (360) 504-2440.  If you have the time and interest, come see the car in Sequim, Washington. Once the auction has ended, the down payment of $1,000 is due through PayPal within 48 hours.  The balance must be received in verified funds, cash or wire transfer, within 7 days and prior to my releasing the vehicle.   The successful bidder can fly into Seattle, Washington and drive this car home!  Shipping is an alternative; I am not offering shipping on this vehicle.  However, I will work with the winning bidder's shipper.  My zip code is 98382 if you want to obtain shipping quotes.

Thank you for looking and Happy Bidding!

Cars with the most reckless drivers are full of surprises

Wed, Oct 13 2021

Insurify is a site for comparing auto insurance quotes. Because insurance shoppers need to submit information like the vehicles they're driving and the infractions they've compiled while driving those vehicles, Insurify has quite the database of correlations tying certain models to a habit of breaking certain laws. When the site's data analysts decided to compile a list of the top ten models for reckless driving citations in the decade from 2010 to 2019, the ranking contained a few wild entries. The Dodge Challenger making the countdown will surprise precisely zero people. But the Saturn L200? First, a definition: USLegal.com defines reckless driving as "driving with a willful or wanton disregard for safety. It is the operation of an automobile under such circumstances and in such a manner as to show a willful or reckless disregard of consequences." So this list is a caution about particular drivers more than the cars. For a baseline, according to Insurify data, for any random model, 15 out of 10,000 people who drive that model have picked up one citation for reckless driving. Back to that Challenger, then. No shocker for being here, but it's actually number 10, with 44 out of 10,000 Challenger drivers nabbed for a willful disregard of consequences on the road. That's better than the first surprise entry, the Saturn L200, a sedan only on sale for six years, with the least horsepower on the list, and out of production since 2005. The data set put drivers of GM's extraterrestrial sedan at 45 reckless pilots per 10,000 drivers. There are two pickups on the list, the only modern one being the Ram 1500 at eighth, with a rate of 46 in 10,000. Somehow, drivers of the third-best-selling pickup in the U.S. outrun the overwhelming numerical superiority of the best-selling vehicle in the States, the Ford F-150. The other pickup is the Chevrolet K1500 at number five, with a rate of 56 in 10,000. This is not only the oldest vehicle on the list, it went out of production in 2002, before any other vehicle on the list. Between the trucks, the Volkswagen CC slotted in at seven with 47 in 10,000 reckless driving chits, the Cadillac ATS slipped into sixth with 48 in 10,000.  The top four is a bag of unexpected. The Nissan 370Z is the first hardcore sports car on the list at number four, with 61 in 10,000 Z drivers flaunting their Fairladys in the face of Johnny Law.

Buick Encore, Chevy Trax earn Top Safety Pick from IIHS [w/video]

Thu, Feb 12 2015

The Buick Encore has been a massive sales success practically from the moment it debuted, and Buick recently decided to increase production to keep up with demand for the premium compact crossover. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently put one to the test again, and the Encore earned a Top Safety Pick award. It's the first model from the brand to score the nod since 2013, according to the IIHS, and the rating also carries over to the 2015 Chevrolet Trax. The 2015 Encore scored a Good rating in all of the IIHS' evaluations, including the 40-mile-per-hour, small overlap front crash test. That was a big improvement over the previous model the institute tested, which scored a Poor result in the overlap test. In the first test, about 13 inches of the lower door hinge pillar came into the passenger compartment, and the steering wheel airbag moved too far to protect the dummy's head. Improvements for the latest model year showed six inches of intrusion this time, and the airbags caught the dummy's head well. The dummy's sensors also indicated a low risk of injury. The two CUVs missed out on the full Top Safety Pick+ because the IIHS scored the Encore as only having a basic front crash prevention system, and there was no such equipment for the Trax. To earn the highest mark, models need at least an advanced rating by the institute for this technology. Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax earn 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK award ARLINGTON, Va. - A small SUV is the first vehicle from the Buick brand to qualify for a TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety since 2013. The Buick Encore's newly introduced, lower-priced twin, the Chevrolet Trax, also qualifies for the honor. The Encore's award follows improvements to the SUV's structure for better small overlap front protection. The 2015 model earns a good rating in the small overlap test. In contrast, the 2013-14 Encore rated poor in the test. The driver's space was seriously compromised with intrusion measuring as much as 13 inches at the lower door hinge pillar. The dummy's head barely contacted the front airbag before sliding off the left side, as the steering column moved to the right. The side curtain airbag deployed too late and didn't have sufficient forward coverage to protect the head. In the latest test, the driver space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of 6 inches at the door hinge pillar and instrument panel. The dummy's movement was well-controlled.
