1974 BMW 2002tii Fjord

This 1974 BMW 2002Tii has been the pride and joy of a local BMW CCA member who has owned this car for the last 8 years. During that time he has used it as a daily driver six months out of each year and done several upgrades throughout.

Exterior

The Tii was purchased in 2006 from the Bay Area and after three years of local commuting the owner decided to give it a fresh coat of paint.

In 2009 it received a bare metal, glass out, panels on, engine in, re-spray done in Fjord, a color that looks simply stunning on the 2002. After paint, new seals were fitted throughout including: door seals, windshield seals with new chrome locking strips and a new windshield along with all new rear quarter window seals, vertical seals, door handle seals, under-hood engine seals, and more.

All the trim work was professionally polished including belt line trim, b-pillar trim, quarter window trim, rocker trim and the front and rear bumper.

New flat Euro H4 headlights were fitted along with new turn signal lights, reflectors and rear tail light lenses.

Five years later - the paint still looks great, the polish work looks fantastic, and there are only very minor blemishes, including two very small stars on the windshield (see pics) and aged wing window seals.

Interior

After paint, the interior was also redone. A pair of e21 Recaro front seats were selected and refitted with matching upholstery for the rear seat. A new headliner, rear parcel tray, pillar vinyl and carpet kit were also fitted. The original door panels were all retained and are now showing wear, particularly the lower driver side (see pic).

All lighting works correctly including the dome light. The instrument cluster is fully functional with a prior service at NHS, but alas the clock, the horn, washer pump, and the blower motor are not operational.

The dash is in amazing condition, with only a few very small cracks, a sign of dedicated covered parking and lack of summer use here in Las Vegas.

The center console is fitted with a Blaupunkt CD Player and a XM Satellite Radio Receiver (subscription not included) and sounds great through a pair of Blaupunkt 3 Way 6x9 speakers mounted on the rear seat tray.

Mechanical

The owner has kept meticulous service records over the past eight years of ownership.

Service highlights include: Water Pump and Strut Mounts (2006), Alternator, Voltage Regulator, Rear Brakes – Shoes, Drums, Wheel Cylinders, and e-Brake Cables (2007), Control Arms, Radius Rod Bushings, Idler Arm Bushings, Tie Rod Assembly and Center Link, Fuel Injection Lines (2008), Thermostat, Cooling Hoses, Rear Crankshaft Seal, Clutch, Trans Seals, Guibo, Trans Mount (2011), Cap, Rotor, Pertronix Ignition (2012), Cold Start Valve, Tension Spring, Coil, Plugs, Wires, Filters (2013). Oil Pan Gasket, Front Crank Seal, Timing Cover Gaskets, K-Pump Belt, Intake & Exhaust Manifold Gaskets, e28 Fuel Pump, Valve Adjustment (2014).

The engine starts easily, runs strong, and after the recent valve adjustment had compression rates of: 155,140, 150, 150.

The battery has been relocated to the trunk and the original tray has been removed for better service access.

It runs cool in the heat of the NV desert and the original 4 Speed transmission shifts smoothly and has no grinding synchros.

The suspension still rides great on Bilsteins, Performance Springs, Larger Front and Rear Sway Bars.

The brake system has been updated with vented front rotors and larger front calipers.

The BMW OEM FPS Alloys are wrapped in aging Falken 175/70/R13’s, and there is a slight vibration at freeway speed either from early tire dry rot or the one curbed alloy that is slightly bent.

Recent service inspection noted a moist clutch slave cylinder, a minor trans weep and a need for a full differential re-seal.
