WE THOUGHT THESE 1959 OLDSMOBILE COMMERCIALS WERE SO GREAT WE THOUGHT WE WOULD START THE AD OUT WITH THEM!
(THE COMMERCIALS ARE NOT OF THE ACTUAL CAR FOR SALE - JUST FOR FUN AND INFORMATION!)

Harley Earl, the legendary chief designer for General Motors loved to take design cues from his dream cars/concept cars and incorporate them into production cars.  Many will remember how the 1953 Olds Fiesta wraparound windshield was used on the 1954 Oldsmobile and the backend of the 1954 Buick Skylark was almost identical to the backend of the 1954 Buick Wildcat II concept car.  So it was with the 1959 Oldsmobile that many of the styling cues were taken from former Oldsmobile dream cars/concept cars for the final production design for the 1959 Oldsmobile.

For many people the 1959 Oldsmobile was known as the “King of the Road” and its reputation for advanced design, reliability and fast acceleration had long been established.  These qualities are what serious collectors look for when adding to their collections.

The 1959 Oldsmobile design is one of the most beautiful designs that came out of Oldsmobile’s standard production and the mass of glass expanse on the hardtop is something that usually impresses everybody.  Oldsmobile called the 1959 design the ‘linear look’.  Oldsmobile claimed that the two door Super 88 hardtop was their sports car.  While of course it was not a true sports car it was certainly one of the fastest and best handling cars for 1959.

The design of the 1959 Oldsmobile while very different was not “overdone” as compared to the gigantic fins on the 1959 Eldorado.  The way Oldsmobile described their performance was “smoother, faster and more economical then ever”.  The power steering was called “Rota Matic” and that was because while it was very light to the touch it also gave you excellent road feel.  To top this off the 1959 Olds was equipped with air scoop brakes and the two door had so much glass on it they called it the “SceniCoupe”, you certainly did not need a back up camera with one of these cars, you could see 360 degrees in perfect fashion.

The car that you see before you is really a true and fabulous survivor.  It is believed that the car spent just about all of its life in California.  This 1959 Oldsmobile is the “Super 88” and the paint is very nice and is certainly one of our favorite colors schemes.  This car is equipped with the Super Deluxe Wonder-Bar signal-seeker radio.

If you are a collector that likes to spice things up at car shows the 1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 will stand apart from the tri-Chevrolets, 1959 & 1960 Eldorados and you will love the attention you will get in this 1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday 2-door hardtop.  Very, very seldom do you see one of these at car shows and that is what makes people gather around this car.

Yes this car is ready for the Saturday night drive-in or a summer drive with the “Vintage Air” air conditioner to keep you comfortable.  When the weather is pleasant, you can roll down all the windows and let the breeze blow right through the car.  This 1959 Oldsmobile is nothing like the modern cars of today that have such high beltlines you can barely see out over the driver’s door and in most cases can’t see over the back end.  This 1959 Oldsmobile will provide a scenic ride.

1959 was the last year for Oldsmobile to use styling cues from their dream cars to make their final designs and by 1960 the cars being built didn’t quite have the panache of the cars from the 50s.  MissChiTown highly recommends this car and can tell you that it is coming from a serious collector that has had it for five years but is now cutting back on his total number of cars.

Seller has provided the following information.

VIN:  598C…..

1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 SceniCoupe (also known as a Holiday coupe).

Three-speed Jetaway Hydra-Matic transmission

Power brakes

Power steering

6-way power seat

Correct 394 cid 315 hp V8 engine

The clock’s works have been converted to a quartz movement, and it works well.

Vintage Air A/C was installed in 2009.  The car has a great expanse of glass but the A/C unit keeps the car tolerable in 105 degree full-sun weather.

This car was built at the Southgate, CA plant and first registered in California in 1958.  As far as I know, the car has been in Southern California ever since

There is no rust.

The car has been garaged and covered since it was repainted in the original russet and polar white in 2007.

The custom car cover goes with the car.

The car’s exhaust system has been converted from single to dual exhaust.

Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition system.

The rear springs have been replaced.

Overall, the car is in far above average condition.  The only things that I want to mention are the following:

·     The Super Deluxe radio’s Wonder-Bar signal-seeker decided to act up.  I suspect something is loose inside because the mechanism works properly until reaching the end of the dial, then won’t move back to the beginning of the dial.  Other than that, the radio works well.

·     The windshield washer has never squirted since we’ve owned the car.  It needs internal work on the wiper/washer motor, and I didn’t have enough interest to pursue it.  The two-speed wiper does work well.  It could use a new wiper blade refill on the passenger side.

·     The aluminum trim between the headlight and parking light on the driver side is stained.

The car has won these awards:

·     First Place, Oldsmobile Club of Southern California Annual Memorial Car Show & Picnic September, 2010

·     First Place 1959-2004 Oldsmobile, All GM Vehicle Show, Los Angeles Chapter, Buick Club of America, July, 2011

·     Best Domestic Stock Vehicle, 47th Annual Show, Fallbrook Vintage Car Club Region of AACA, May, 2012

The engine was removed, and everything was painted except the firewall because the firewall still has the original factory paint color codes marked on it.  The engine, which was bright orange when we bought the car in January, 2009, is now the correct color which was used only on ’59 & ’60 Olds engines, provided by Fusick.  The hood’s insulation pad is gray.

The road wheels have been widened, painted to match the body, and Cooper Cobra P225/70 R14 2.5" wide whitewall radial tires have replaced the original 9.60-14 bias ply tires.

The horns are not stock for the Olds, but are reproduction Pontiac horns because I couldn’t find the correct Olds horn to replace the one that didn’t work, and wanted a matching pair.  What looks like the radiator is the air conditioning condenser, which is mounted in front of the radiator.  When the A/C was installed, the original fan was replaced by a larger fan.  I have the original fan if new owner would want it.

The interior had new door panels and back seat panels when we bought the car.  We had the seats reupholstered with NOS fabric and correct embossed vinyl from SMS Auto Fabrics.  The upholsterer also covered the package shelf under the back window with the gray vinyl material, and he made a terrycloth seat cover, which I put on the driver’s seat when I leave the car at a repair shop. The custom-made red carpeting was done by the previous owner, as were the custom light gray Oldsmobile - embroidered mats.  I keep the custom mats in the trunk, and use gray rubber mats.  The custom mats go in for display at shows only.  We had the charcoal gray seatbelts installed in front and back.

Why do we want to sell the car? My wife and I have owned it more than five years.  Extensive records detail the work that we and the previous owner had done to the car.  We've had all the improvements that we wanted incorporated.  The novelty has worn off.  I've always had an urge to own a Studebaker.  When my father came home with a yellow and white '49 Commander Land Cruiser I was very happy because it was our first new car, and it looked great!  That same day Dad's older brother said the car is too light, therefore unsafe.  Back to the dealer went the beautiful Studebaker, and Dad came home in a new, but uninspiring, gray Buick sedanette.  We’ve just bought a ’50 Studebaker.  Maintaining and driving six cars would be more work than I want, so we’ll sell the Olds.
