The SL Market Letter is pleased to present this 1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL

The owner of this car is one of our clients who is downsizing and moving out of state for retirement. He and his wife have owned the car since January of 2000 when it was purchased from Sears Imports, a franchised Mercedes-Benz dealership here in Minneapolis.

Ivory (670H) exterior with contrasting Tobacco Brown (423H) hard top and hub caps. Dark brown soft top, replaced when purchased in 2000, by the Mercedes dealer. The interior is dark brown MB Tex, Automatic transmission with Air Conditioning. The tool kit is with the car, as well as the original owner’s manual.

Mileage is believed to be original at the indicated 95,135. The current owner kept the car at his lake home where it was only driven sparingly, in the Summer. The car is not rusty. The car was repainted at some point, probably in the mid 1990s in its correct Ivory / Tobacco Brown color combination. Door and body gaps are straight and even, very good all the way around. The paint is excellent all the way around, it is shiny and of very high quality. There is one blemish along the driver’s side of the hood and one bubble in the paint behind the passenger’s side headlamp bezel (both are clearly indicated in the photos below). There are a handful of small rock chips on the front valence, but very few, the paint looks very nice as does the chrome on the bumpers and hard top.

We did not take the hard top off for the photos, the soft top was replaced at the Mercedes dealership when the car was purchased in 2000, it is in very nice condition and is dark brown canvas.

The original MB tex interior is in very nice condition, the carpet is nice, the rear parcel shelf was never cut for extra speakers, the car is still equipped with its original Becker stereo. The interior wood is original and in wonderful condition as is the dash. There was an auxiliary air horn installed in the car at some point (see black box under dash on driver’s side).

Mechanically the car starts immediately without smoke and runs smooth and strong. The automatic transmission shifts well up and down through the gears. The current owner maintained the car throughout his ownership, despite the little he drove it. There are some service receipts for the car, new front brake calipers, master cylinder and brake lines in 2008 among others.
