After two and a half decades of falling on Rolls Royce’s coat tails, the Bentley brand needed something to revamp the company. The Mulsanne was introduced in 1981 and did very little to set it set apart from its Rolls Royce Silver Spur counterpart. Bentley decide to add a turbo charger to the existing Mulsanne model but the car was given mixed reviews. It wasn’t until 1987 when Bentley went back to the drawing board and revamped the Mulsanne completely by adding a new model to the line up all together. The Turbo R was introduced as a brand new true luxury sports saloon that was immensely capable at high speeds and offered a sublime suspension. The Turbo R (R for Roadholding) carried the familiar 6.75 litre but with an added Garrett turbo charger. The Bentley engineers also demanded the car have a 50% increase in roll stiffness over the current Mulsanne by upping the anti roll bar weights and increasing the damping. The car was introduced to the United States market in 1989 and was given immense praise by Motor Trend magazine stating, “the first Bentley in decades that deserves the name”. Although Rolls Royce/Bentley never officially released engine specifications, the car was believed to have 300 horsepower and 450 lbs-ft of torque propelling the near 3 ton juggernaut to 60 miles per hour in 6 seconds. The Turbo R was not only quick but also gave a superb well balanced ride. The car offered an outstanding blend of handling and ride but wrapped its occupants in true Bentley tradition. This Turbo R left the Bentley Crewe production line in October of 1989 and was invoiced to North America. The car sold new in Ontario Canada to its first owner in December of 1989 in the amount of $195,000. The Turbo R has only three owners from brand new and has covered only 45,110 actual Box A miles (72,527KM). The Royal Blue Metallic paint is absolutely stunning and shows absolutely no dents, dings or scratches anywhere on the car and only a few tiny stone chips on the front nose and lower skirt valance. All of the exterior chrome and trim look beautiful and show almost no wear or age of any kind. All of the glass and lenses look excellent and free from any pitting or damage. The stunning blue Connolly leather interior shows almost no wear of any kind with just a slight creasing on the drivers bolster. All of the Surf Blue piping and Wilton Wool carpets are in outstanding condition free from any wear, stains or damage. All of the leather on the console, doors, upper and lower dash look near showroom and free from any damage or issues. All of the interior chrome, all of the trim and all of the switchgear are in outstanding condition and free from any damage or wear. This Turbo R starts right up and idles beautifully. The car goes into gear with ease and shifts effortlessly through all of the gears. The 6.75 litre turbocharged engine pulls effortlessly and gives an endless amount of smooth power. The suspension feels very tight and precise and is free from any thumping or noises. The brakes feel very solid and do not give any signs of fade or grinding and the steering is very precise and tight without any vibrations or wondering. The rear hydraulic suspension adjusts the vehicle like it is designed to and upon cold start levels the car. All of the electronics in the car are in excellent working order, all of the windows, locks, mirrors, seats, seat heaters, windshield wipers, interior and exterior lights, power antenna and radio are all working as designed. The AC blows very cold and the heater works on all of the fan speeds. All of the gauges are working and appear to be reading correctly. This Turbo R has just had a recent tune up and service along with BRAND NEW AVON tires (Bentley recommended tires cost about $600-700 a tire). There are no signs of any damage, rust or corrosion to this Bentley or any signs of paint work having ever been done. This Turbo R comes with its original set of Bentley keys, owners manuals, dealer books, service books, warranty books and original leather case. The car also has its original jack, jack tools, tool kit, and spare. The car has a clean and clear carfax and clean and clear title with Box A actual miles.
