1978 VW Westfalia Deluxe Campmobile

1978 Volkswagen Camper
Name: "Dakota"

Runs, drives, camps with the best of them.

Time capsule survivor ready for another 36 years.

Where to start…where to start… ok, I'll just dive in
and babble for a while on the bus, components, systems, features, options etc… in no particular order.
Please excuse the disjointedness, it's HOT here
It NEVER gets hot in Seattle! ...uh hem… onward.

Excellent replacement 3 window pop top caves. Nice for ventilation and thicker/better quality than most.

Great upper bunk (penthouse).

Engine has excellent compression, NO leaks, no smoke, nice and quiet, cruises all day long and stays cool. New engine heat shield seal, valve adjustment (even though they are hydraulic valves it's good
to check them every 20k or so). Fresh tune up, oil change and filter. Has catalytic converter for those unfortunate folks that have to undergo a visual inspection and emissions.

Transmission is tight and shifts perfectly.

All CV joints removed, checked, packed and
reinstalled. No axle problems.

All electrical works. Dome lights, dash lights, turn signals, parking lights, bright dim headlights, even the rear side marker lights!

Brakes (no leaks, lot's of the pads and shoes left), rotors, calipers and lines all in great shape.

Clutch adjusted to factory specs.

Horn works. *Beep* *Beep*.

Tires are properly load rated Michelin LTX's.
Jack lug wrench and spare included.

Speaking of included… EVERYTHING that came from
the factory is there. Center box camping stool, both tables (the rear swivel one and the front "drive in table"), mosquito net, full set of factory curtains in incredible shape, including the front privacy curtain for the full "black out". Factory dual battery setup that works great.

Cool rotating passenger seat. Nice for the galley setup and conversation pit.

Even the "joy buzzer" works. (key in ignition warning sound that mimics the "most annoying sound in the world from Dumb and Dumber"… at a much lower volume.

The battery boxes are the nicest I've ever seen, no holes, no rust. Beautiful.

The suspension is all in clean working order.
All 4 balljoints have been replaced, as was the center
link pin. KYB shocks finish the ride. Nice and straight,
(no involuntary lane changes!)

All glass is good. New front shaded windshield.
New seals on the front/rear/rear side windows. Drivers and passenger door seals, rear deck, hatch, slider door all in good shape.

Still with me?

The repaint (dual stage) came out great, not flawless,
but still gorgeous. No rust. Period. Not in the body, rockers, doglegs, not under the windshield, not under the front bumper cowl. Not in the wheel wells, steps, floorboard, not in either battery box etc. etc. NO RUST.

The fiberglass poptop was sanded, sealed and painted with acrylic boat paint. Nice

All door locks work with one key. Yippee!

Locking gas cap. The stuff is like gold these days.

The interior is a prime stock example, the woodwork is in fantastic shape, as are the cabinets and upholstery. The rear carpet is unbelievable for stock, no major flaws, even the front carpet and center carpet are clean.

The stove, sink and refrigerator all work. The
fridge is a bit anemic (typical for these models)… add
bag of ice, it will last for days. The propane tank is
in good shape.

The power console above the fridge is in good order.
Charges your batteries when you are hooked up to
city power.

City water hookup also working, but the tank holds
over 10 gallons so it typically doesn't get used much.

The front carpet is a good indicator of the miles on her.
They are usually trashed. (Originally a California bus).
The odometer shows 65k (only goes to 100k then flips).
I'm guessing 165k, but I don't have the paperwork to
back it up unfortunately. argh.

Shelf up top on the drivers side was put in by someone
else. It's very nice to have like the later model vanagons, so I left it in (even though it's not stock…*sigh*)

The side Louvered (Jalousie) windows work perfect,
make a nice cross wind on those summer days. Screens are included to keep the pests out.

Decent Kenwood stereo with two 6x9 speakers make
good noise. Grateful Dead CD optional.

No smoking vehicle… well… no cigarettes ever.
Won't tell you what I found in the once used ashtray.
Again. Bad Hippy 8-)

At least the former owners were very clean.
My wife has done more than her share of elbow grease
on this one. It smells like a Westy… and that is a beautiful thing. Ahhhh. Clean Clean Clean

One bad thing I have worked out but didn't get a chance to do. The dash has 2 imprints and 4 holes
where cup holders were mounted (bad hippy!).
It is the perfect places to mount a dash pod of
a voltmeter, oil temp, oil pressure, altimeter.. whatever.
A friend did this and it looks great and passes for factory.

Sleeps 4 very comfortably.

Heat is good… for a Volkswagen.

!!!!!~~~~!!!!!...

You are responsible to pay for it and pick it up. I will help where I can, but you are ultimately responsible for pickup.

1/2 down at end of auction. 1/2 on pickup. Either way, payment is due in full in 7 days when/if the auction ends normally.

If you would like other terms or need extended storage, just ask, I have plenty of room.

I reserve the right to end auction early as the vehicle is for sale locally.

No bidders with less than 10 positive feedback without prior written (or verbal) consent from me. Bids without meeting this simple rule will be cancelled. Just let me know you are new… I'm easy.

PLEASE: ask all questions/make requests, before bidding and the very best of luck if you decide to do so….

Thank you for reading my ad (if you got this far).
I'll try to be more linear next time.
