Vehicle info

When it comes to rare American Muscle cars, it doesn't get much better than this 1971 HEMI Plymouth GTX. With a total production of just under 3,000 units, the 1971 GTX is a rather rare car in general, but if you look even closer you'll see that only 30 were built to US specs complete with the great 426 HEMI. In fact, this car is so rare, that this is the first time we've had a '71 GTX Hemi come through our showroom.

Add in tasty options like the 4 speed Pistol grip shifter, Super Track Pak axle package, and tuff steering wheel, and you've got the kind of car that makes numbers junkies start twitching, knowing they're about to get their next fix. But before we get too far lets decode the fender tag to show just how highly optioned this rare GTX really is:

Every bit of this Mopar's bright ornamentation is extremely clean and looks excellent against a correct coat of Plymouth's glossy Formal Black paint. Only 1.2% of the entire Satellite line were painted in Formal Black, so finding a 1971 Hemi GTX that left the factory in Formal Black is extremely rare. At the front of the car, a black grille hangs a bold "GTX" script between four halogen headlamps, a good looking chrome bumper and crystal clear parking lights. Above the grille you'll find a Plymouth logo recessed into the front of the correct air grabber hood. Mounted on both front fenders you'll find HEMI decals that giveaway what is lying under the air-grabber hood. Above that hood, like-new glass rides between a correct vinyl roof, well-maintained trim and the rearview mirrors. Below that glass, slab-sided body panels, which do a great job of conveying Plymouth's classic broad-shouldered design language, hang aggressive "GTX" emblems and traditional Chrysler door handles. And at the back of the car, a large red GTX logo has the words Plymouth embedded within and hangs above another chrome bumper. Below the bumper you'll find a set of correct resonators equipped with chrome exhaust tips.

Toss this coupe's long hood and you'll find a period correct, 426 cubic inch HEMI V8 that's authenticated by a famous 2468330 casting number. As Plymouth's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a glossy, Hemi Orange block that hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel and air is supplied by two large 4-barrel carburetors and a high performance, cast iron intake. Combustion is cooled by a correct 26-inch radiator that's fitted with fresh, Chrysler-branded hoses and old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the car's black engine compartment, that is accented by the HEMI orange, is clean and understated... Well, as understated as a classic HEMI can be.

Bolted to the massive Hemi is the original A833 4-speed manual transmission that wears a matching six-digit VIN. From there, power travels down the long driveshaft to the Dana 60 rear axle that originally left the factory with 4.10 gears, but now houses 3.54 sure-grip gears. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power drum brakes. In front of those brakes you'll find 15" rims that have been wrapped in G60 raised white letter Goodyear Polyglas rubber.

Counter to today's obsession with technology and convenience, it seems old school American muscle cars only needed black vinyl, a bit of wood trim and essential instrumentation to strike a perfect balance of 'instantly classic' and 'perpetually cool'. And when you open this coupe's solid doors, you'll find a cockpit where legendary Mopar power melds seamlessly with a stylish, no-nonsense driving environment. The smooth Tuff steering wheel uses power steering with cooler for fast reliable response when needed. At the center of the floors, firm deluxe front with folding armrest and rear black cloth and vinyl bench seats. At the sides of those seats, weather-free door panels hang armrests below bright wood trim. At the bottom of those panels, good looking carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats. On top of that carpet, a pistol grip shifter transfers power to pavement. Above a tight black headliner is stretched around straight roof bows and a fully functional dome light. The car's classy dash hangs fully functional gauges behind correct wood trim. Behind the passengers, the car's fully restored trunk contains a full-size spare, refurbished jack and decklid decal.

We aren't the only ones who think this GTX presents incredibly well. The GTX recently picked up the Best Mopar in class award at the 2013 Land of Lakes Muscle Car Classic show and was in the top 15 at the Ostego Prairie festival car show. Also included in the sale of this GTX are the original owner's manual, restoration photos, restoration receipts, and a GTS visual report.
