The Lotus S4s was the last four-cylinder powered Esprit sold in the US. It is powered by the legendary Sports300 engine with an output of 300 hp at 7000 rpm and a peak torque of 290 lbs-ft at 3600 rpm. The S4S has a top speed of 168 mph and makes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 4.6 seconds.

This S4s has been very well cared for. The original paint is proof that it was never in any kind of accident. Only the front bumper was re-sprayed some time ago due to small gravel inflicted chips in the paint. Some minor blemishes and typical spider-cracks are barely visible.

The interior was redone about two years ago. Since the car has hardly been driven since it still looks and smells like new. Dash is straight with no signs of deformation or "bubbling". All gauges, switches and power windows are perfectly working. The shifter was updated to the nicer edition one from the V8 model. A/C blows ice cold.

US models of the S4s were fitted with a real unattractive airbag steering wheel supplied by GM. The replacement Momo wheel is not just better looking, it also makes the car easier to handle since there is now actual room for your legs. However, if somebody wants to convert it back to original - the GM wheel is still on hand.

The power unit is pretty much original. Only useful upgrades were installed:

MSD coils are in place of the ever doubled Delco ones.

A small and mild sounding blow-off-valve was added.

The under performing mechanical charge cooler pump was replaced with an industrial size electric Dayton pump. It really makes a huge difference.

The GM exhaust system was replaced with with a Quicksilver stainless steel unit, imported from England. Catalytic converter is still in place.

 

The transmission underwent just recently a complete overhaul. All of the bushings and ball joints are also new. Just about all of the repair work was done by "Lotus by Claudius" within the last three years.

 

 

 

Overall this is a very well sorted S4s. Good late model Esprits are just getting harder to find. I think true Lotus fans know what I mean...
