The GL class debuted for Mercedes in 2007 to much acclaim.  This is one of the few luxury SUV's in this segment with a third row seat.  The GL320 was one of the pioneers of German Diesel engineering in the American market.

The 320 TDI is one of the few vehicles that has ever consistently beat out the EPA's rating for fuel economy.  Every time we've driven this baby, we've been amazed at the rampant economy she gets.

Exterior
The GL-Class has three rows of seats but manages to wrap them in a package that avoids the vaguely minivan-esque profile of the R-Class. A sharply raked hood gives the GL a sports appearance that is accentuated with muscular flared wheel archs.  Twin power domes running the length of the hood recall similar cues in the company's classic 300SL Gullwing sports cars.

What's inside?

MB really designed the GL with intention for the United States market.  Hence the massive cupholders to take our 44 ounce big gulp drinks.  Which is a little embarassing if we have to admit it!  Alas the interior is finely appointed with premium leather and a nice wood grain as most would expect in this category.  MB also has the Comand electronic system that is both intuitive and relatively easy to use after a short intro period.

What's under the bonnet?

The GL320TDI has a 3.2 liter V6 Diesel engine that produces 210 horsepower but great torque through the entire band.  For getting around town this Diesel engine is quite the sweetheart.

Safety
The GL-Class uses a combination of cheaper-to-replace bolt-on steel crash boxes and lightweight aluminum sections to minimize weight and repair expense while maximizing crash safety. As with every Mercedes, the GL320 is loaded with smart airbags, load-limiting seat belts, antilock brakes, stability control and nearly every other safety doodad available. Side curtain airbags for all three rows help prevent ejection in rollovers, while seat-mounted side airbags provide additional torso protection in side impacts for passengers in the first and second rows.
