1978 Jeep CJ7 304 V8 Auto Rock Crawler Project Builder

Description

The Story:
My Dad took this big Jeep CJ7 in a trade for his quad up in Denver and quickly figured out this is not a good project for a 65 year old retired guy with a bad back and a replacement hip who just wants to go fishing in a Jeep. I found him a very nice 2000 Jeep TJ, now he's driving in comfort with AC and cruise control, a happy guy after he dropped this rig in my front yard, lol, thanks Dad! I have owned/built a lot of CJ5-7s, there's some good stuff to work with here, you could have a big V8 powered off road bruiser with a little dough, some elbow grease and imagination.

If you're shopping for a "drive it home, it just needs a few little things, I don't know how to turn a wrench, no clue what I'm looking at" CJ7 please stop reading this ad and move on, this is not the rig for you. If you know how to turn a wrench, are familiar with this type of Jeep, their quirks and issues, there might some tool/beer nights in the garage and some back country fun lurking under the sheet metal of this old beast.

The Good Stuff:
Has a good 304 V8 (100lbs compression average across the board, no low or dead cylinders) automatic trans that shifts through all the gears quite well, power disc brakes, power steering, a big suspension (Skyjacker?) and body lift kit, hard top/doors, 4 nearly brand new 33/12.5/15 Kevlar Goodyear Wrangler MT/R mud terrain ($1000) tires on black steel rock crawler wheels, stainless brake lines, nice bucket seats, etc. Has power disc brakes up front, they have been adjusted and it stops great. I don't see any rust underneath, the floor boards are excellent as is the frame (see photos) It starts well, sounds very good at idle, no smoke or anything, has a lot of potential.

The Not So Good Stuff:
The engine appears to be sound (looks stock too) but it is in need of a tune up, the carb has a big flat spot right off idle like a bad accelerator pump, needs a rebuild/replacement. The steering box is worn out, is unsafe on the road above 35 mph, wanders around at will (scared the sh*t out of me) you should not try to drive this jeep home, you need to bring a trailer or I can help arrange transport. If you're close by I might be able to deliver, if you're farther away, read shipping stuff below. Some of the dash gages don't work, it has a dent in the hood (see photos) the paint and body work looks like a driveway job, who ever sprayed it should not quit their day job (see photos) The hard top was stored upright, has a big stain inside from standing water (needs a scrub brush) and some rust in the bottom of the hatch (see photos) The exhaust is garbage, put together with clamps, sheet metal etc. (see photos)
