Body, Trim and Paint

Restored likely in the 90's, this rare Porsche 356A Sunroof Coupe has resided in Southern and Central California. It's last owner of 13 years, drove the car less than 2000 miles. The upper body shows no serious rust. All body panels are very straight with no dings or dents. Opening panel gaps are excellent.  Rear deck lid and doors are originals. Hood is straight with no evidence of kink damage. The right front fender shows evidence of an older partial clip repair. Rear body panels show no evidence of clip. Chassis number (103442) matches stamp in trunk floor and plate on door hinge cover. Original gas tank date coded 4/58 is in excellent condition. Looking at the undercarriage, the battery box appears to be original and solid inside with only a bit of rust near the tow hook at the bottom, the floors are original with only a very few minor rust spots and the longitudinals are overall solid with one or two minor rust spots. One very small square patch at the bottom of right front closing panel. Overall, the  undercarriage is very solid and quite rare to find a 356A with it's original undercarriage.

All  trim parts are present and in excellent condition. All chrome is excellent. All glass is original with correct Sigla and Sekurit markings and is clear with no obvious chips. Front and rear light lenses show no cracks. Rubber was replaced during the restoration and remains in very good condition.

The original color per the Certificate of Authenticity was Ivory. The color change was very thorough with no areas wearing in the original Ivory color. The paint overall remains in  good condition with  a few  blemishes (e.g. a few small isolated areas show a light goose pimple texture, a few scratches below front bumper). There are no areas of overspray as glass and trim were likely removed during the repaint. Our paint meter found no areas of thick body filler with most readings measuring in the 500 to 700 micron range.

Interior

The original interior per the COA was Red Leatherette.  The interior  was changed to Tan leather during the restoration. The interior remains in be in good condition overall with some visible wear on the headliner. The gauges, switches and knobs on the face of the dash are all present. All interior door handles are present and correct.

Electricals

Headlights (low and high beams), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals and horns are functional. Wipers are not presently functional  due to the 12 volt system upgrade. Wiper motor is the original 6 volt unit. Generator and oil pressure warning lights are functional. The odometer is functional and currently reads   52,958 miles.  The electrical system has been upgraded to 12 volts, so headlights are nice and bright at night. Good 12 volt battery is installed and holds a charge. A modern  AM/FM/CD stereo system has also been installed, but can be easily removed.

Engine and Transmission

A correct 1600cc engine with blank third piece is installed. The engine was  rebuilt during the restoration and has been driven  an estimated 2000 miles by it's last owner of 13 years. Engine starts easily, holds a steady idle and accelerates smoothly with excellent power. There is no smoking on startup or during hard acceleration.  The correct Zenith NDIX carburetors are  installed and provide  smooth power progression. A full engine tuneup was completed by a professional Porsche mechanic within the last 50 miles.

A correct BBBC geared 644 type transmission is installed with correct 1958 date code, though it is not the original transmission. The transmission shifts smoothly into every gear with no grinding or unusual noises.

Suspension, Wheels, Tires and Brakes

Steering is light and precise as it should be. This is a T2 series 356A, so steering response is much improved with the ZF steering box. Front end is nice and tight with no vibration. All four Koni shocks are in excellent condition and are just firm enough without sacrificing ride comfort.  Wheel alignment is correct with no wheel vibration at high speed.

15" x 5.5" chrome wheels are installed and provide a smooth and stable ride at high speeds. 15" x 4.5" spare chrome wheel is included.

Four Pirelli P6000 radial tires (size 195/65HR15) are installed  and are in very good condition with no cracks and good tread.

The brakes are functioning well. The emergency brake is correctly adjusted and holds tight.
