1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396

History

The Chevrolet Chevelle was a mid-sized automobile produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors in three generations for the 1964 through 1977 model years. Part of the GM A-Body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertibles and station wagons. Super Sport versions were produced through the 1973 model year.

 

The Chevelle was intended to compete with the Ford Fairlane. In line with other Chevrolet series, the two-door hardtops were called Sport coupes. The Chevelle SS represented Chevrolet's entry into the muscle car battle. The Chevelle SS396 became a series of its own in 1966 with series/style numbers 13817 and 13867.

1966 saw a complete restyle of the Chevelle on the previous frame that included smooth contours, a broad new grille and bumper treatment, and curved side windows. Bulging rear fender lines and a "flying buttress" roofline were highlights of the '66 hardtops. The new body reflected the "Coke bottle" body shape that became the fad for American cars in the mid-1960s.

This nut and bolt restored factory 396/360 4-speed Chevelle SS was completed in 2005 to exact factory standards. With a total of 43,270 documented original miles, this Chevelle SS certainly deserved the 1,000+ man hours spent on the professional restoration. Besides the performance options that were standard on the Super Sport option, this rare Chevelle came equipped with tinted windshield, tilt wheel, wood grain steering wheel, magnesium wheel trim covers, redline tires, instrument panel gauges, tachometer, pushbutton AM radio, front and rear bumper guards. Most important to its originality is the drivetrain, which is completely original to the car as well as all of its correct date-coded auxiliary parts. This exceptional Chevelle SS has been verified by George Zapora of General Motors, has complete owner history as well as verification of its original miles. It is most certainly one of the finest examples in existence.

The previous owner of this beautiful SS was from Utah. He purchased the car out of Arizona in 2005. A CD containing 275 pictures of the restoration and the historical documentation from GM Canada are included in the sale.
