1983 Mercedes Benz 300TD. Runs on diesel, biodiesel, and/or vegetable oil! You can drive for pennies by running on filtered waste vegetable oil (WVO). Also has the original fuel tank so you can fill up and drive on diesel anytime. 341K and going strong! (Seriously. If you're reading this ad, you probably already know, but these engines are legendary.) Current VA inspection good thru 5/2014 (also antique vehicle eligible). I think she looks pretty good for 30--the paint is obviously not original, but definitely turns heads. Mechanically, she's in good shape and just needs a few fixes to be excellent. This car has been well-maintained and driven throughout its life, but recently a couple of issues have come up that I don't have the time/money to fix. There are some other quirks that haven't really bothered me, but I'll list them below so you're fully informed.

AWESOME:
starts like a champ (complained a little when the polar vortex hit, but never fails to start. also equipped with engine block heater to facilitate cold weather starting.)
runs like a champ (seriously, I'm gonna miss the sound of this engine)
automatic transmission shifts smoothly and timely
rear self-leveling suspension works like magic
front end recently got a nice overhaul, too
interior in pretty good shape (few cracks in the dash, one rip in driver's seat, a couple small rips in headliner, driver's side sun visor is tan instead of blue, carpets could use a good shampoo)
it's purple
tires have plenty of life in 'em
brakes do too
minimal rust for an east coast car—previous owner had it repainted and undercoated. the worst spots are pictured (driver's side just behind the front wheel well and passenger side rear door). there's also one small repair (floorboard near gas pedal, water had leaked in and pooled there. fixed with "miracle rust repair" from mercedes source, left a small hole for drainage.)
lots of recent work/new parts/some upgrades
heat works! it takes a minute to kick in but then you'll be toasty.
AC was upgraded a year ago and just needs a new compressor to finish the job.
H4 headlights (brighter than the US-spec originals)
this thing is practically a truck. you should see some of the stuff I've hauled in/on it.
did I mention it runs on vegetable oil? you can fill up for free and reduce your impact on the environment!

LESS AWESOME:
The biggest issue is an oil leak. I hadn't even noticed it driving around town, but after a recent road trip there were some oily spatters on the hatch (due to the wind at highway speed). I suspect it's a gasket, which would be a cheap fix if you're able to DIY, but I haven't had the time to figure out exactly where it's leaking.

The other stuff hasn't bothered me too much, but these are things I imagine someone would like to know before buying a car:

rear windows aren't currently working.
stereo got an ipod-friendly receiver upgrade, but I think some wires maybe got crossed so you sometimes get error messages (but it still works) and it makes weird noises.
turn signals sometimes just stay "on" instead of flashing.
there's always been some play in the steering... it's a common issue with these cars and one of those things I just got used to.
cruise control doesn't work.
power locks only work sometimes. (the car has a brand new vacuum pump, which has been tested and works perfectly, so no worries there.)
the rear hatch was replaced at some point, but not re-keyed, so it has to be opened manually or via the power locks.
sometimes when you first put the key in the ignition, it won't turn... then you take it out, flip it over, and it works. who knows why... maybe because my usual keys are copies? still got the originals though.

I have done lots of improvements, repairs, and maintenance on the car in the last few years and can provide more details on request. A few of the bigger-ticket items:

10/11 new accumulators + hydraulic fluid

12/11 new battery

1/12 new starter

9/12 lots of stuff, including:
  • new (good used) injection pump + harmonic balancer

  • valve adjustment

  • new oil cooler lines (repaired leak)

  • new transmission pressure plate (cheap part, expensive repair!)

fall/13 new vacuum pump + new (used) brake booster

12/13 alignment

I am also in possession of (what I believe to be) almost all the maintenance records from this car's 30 year existence, which I will pass along to the next owner. If you're in the area, you're welcome to peruse them as well, or take the car for a test drive.

PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE BEFORE BUYING OR MAKING AN OFFER. I'm doing my best to represent the car accurately, but I am by no means an expert; I can only relay what I've learned from my personal experiences driving this beauty for the last ~4 years and from the mechanics who have helped me with it. Thanks.

PS. About the AutoCheck issues—I have the (clear) title in hand. And the odometer appears to work fine, my best guess is maybe someone at the DMV decided that it just couldn't be trusted after 210K? (They were clearly not familiar with the million mile engines of lore...)
