Here it is: the elusive and spectacular Hemi ‘Cuda. With only 652 hardtops built in 1970.
Restored several years ago, this ultimate street predator still manages to draw a lot of attention wherever it goes. Arrow-straight, the body was restored by guys who appreciated the caliber of this car, and didn’t take any shortcuts. Assembled just the way the factory would do it—not too perfect—it looks highly authentic and you’ll appreciate the level of detail that went into re-creating the proper period fit and finish. The elastomeric bumpers are in good condition with no cracks or splits, and it’s amazing how significantly they alter the car’s appearance. Despite the Hemi hockey sticks on the flanks, this is actually a fairly low-profile car for such a heavy-hitter, and the black vinyl roof surely helped lure unsuspecting prey back in the early ‘70s. Black vinyl buckets were the order of the day, and if you can touch it, it’s probably new inside this ‘Cuda. Clearly the original owner was on a mission to create a potent car that could be raced, and things like the Rally Gauges and tachometer reinforce that opinion. But then you have a wood grained center console, which is purely a stylistic choice, albeit a good one. It matches the dash, as well as the pistol-grip shifter and wood grained steering wheel, tying the interior together very nicely. Embroidered ‘Hemi’ floor mats protect the recently installed carpets, and the original R11 Music Master AM radio still lives in the dash, playing whatever it is they still broadcast on AM. In back, the trunk still carries a space-saver spare and a full jack assembly. Under that Shaker hood scoop, you’ll find a 426 cubic inch Hemi, perhaps the most feared street engine ever created. It starts easily and doesn’t smell like raw fuel like many Hemis do, and it’s happy to idle in traffic all day without getting cranky. The transmission is, of course, a 4-speed manual and this car is equipped with the A34 Super Track Pak, which includes a Dana 60 stuffed full of 4.10 gears on a Sure Grip limited slip. She has a rebuilt suspension, solid brakes, and properly undercoated floors. A correct reproduction exhaust system creates that magical Hemi soundtrack, bellowing through a set of correct chrome tips poking through the rear valence. Wheels are the original (and handsome) Rally’s wearing what appear to be NOS F60-15 Firestone Wide Oval tires. If you’re looking for a Hemi ‘Cuda you can actually drive and enjoy, you’ve just found it. The “investment grade” appraisal on many of these cars has reduced them to little more than static art, but there’s no question they were designed and built to run. Rare is the owner willing to risk his Hemi on the open road, but those who do are rewarded with a driving experience like no other. Crack all eight barrels wide open, slam the indestructible transmission through the gears, and you’ll grin like a maniac as the tires struggle to grip the pavement, all accompanied by the most spine-tingling soundtrack since Strauss’s Zarathustra spoke. These cars still trade hands for serious coin, but when you pull into a show with a real R-code Hemi under the hood, well, you just became the center of attention. Surely that’s worth something.
