2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class 6.3L AMG Black Series

The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series is based on the Official F1 Safety Car, the high-performance AMG vehicle that has been providing Formula One safety since 2006. The coupe, optimized for the racing circuit, is powered by an AMG 6.3-liter V8 with its performance boosted to 500 bhp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Top-rank handling is assured by the sophisticated AMG threaded suspension with 19-inch AMG forged wheels, new steering and the generously dimensioned AMG high-performance brake system with its composite disks.

Visually, too, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series clearly shows its descent from the Official F1 Safety Car: its striking front apron with large cooling intakes, flared wheel arches, diffusor-type rear apron and carbon-fiber airflow breakaway edge, all demonstrate the car’s sporting pedigree.The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series is technically and visually oriented towards the Official F1 Safety Car and thus addresses all sports-car enthusiasts who value high competitiveness.

An output upgraded by 25 bhp accelerates the CLK 63 AMG Black Series from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, a few tenths of a second faster than the standard model with 475 bhp. The top speed is electronically limited to 186 mph (300 km/h).If the CLK63's cornering speeds don't get your attention, its styling will. Enlarged front openings feed air to a larger radiator and a second transmission cooler. Massively flared fenders are flanked in front by carbon-fiber splitters and cooling vents. A tasteful carbon-fiber rear spoiler punctuates the trunk lid, and the differential cooler and the quad exhaust pipes are housed in a large rear diffuser. Once you’re behind the driver’s seat, you’ll notice the unusual, flat-bottomed steering wheel. Shifter paddles are mounted immediately behind the wheel, within easy reach. That’s good news for those who prefer to run the coupe’s seven-speed automatic in manual mode. The oddly-shaped lever that replaces the center console’s normal shifter isn’t meant to be used for changing gears. It’s designed, instead, to select your preferred shift mode.The Black Series edition truly puts the driver in control. You’ll have the option of setting such things as ride height, shock damping, and even suspension camber, should you so choose.Fire it up, and the Black Series coupe settles into a confidence-inspiring burble that makes you anxious to get out on the track. The throttle is intuitively responsive, to the point where it feels like a natural extension of your own foot. 0-60 times fly by in barely 4.1 seconds. Mercedes officials reveal they’ve electronically limited the top end to 186 mph.

The Black Series blasts down the straights on an exhilarating tide of torque and then digs in hard under braking, turns in with considerable tenacity, rotates willingly on the throttle, and rockets out of the corner. All courtesy of the latest generation of Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, which do a lot to make transitions progressive and readable without premature tire squeal Not to mention the rumble that emanates from the pipes when you bring the big 6.2-liter V-8 to life. It starts with a deep snarl and quickly settles to a basso profound grumble. There's a whole boatload of torque available (peaking at 465 pound-feet at 5250 rpm, but offering nearly 370 at just 2000 rpm), so the CLK will move off easily on a whiff of throttle and a lazy burble from the exhausts.The Black Series is immediately identifiable by its aggressive air-scoop-rich front end and muscular wheel arches. The carbon-fiber ducts you see on the front fascia sides are the real thing from a material and functional standpoint as is the tail spoiler If you can get the tires hooked up, you'll be at 60 mph four seconds later.
