The record breaking starts with the 0-60mph time, it starts with a 3, its top speed starts with a 2, and it passes 100mph in about seven seconds. Impressed yet? Of course, its fast, and the seven-speed twin-clutch semi-automatic gearbox is more than capable of keeping up with the engine. However, it’s the breadth of ability that really gets you. With the gearbox in full automatic mode, it will dawdle through town at 35mph in seventh gear astonishingly flexible. More impressive than the numbers themselves, is the way with which the 458 goes about setting them. The 458 is a real testament to advances in production, in that a few years ago extracting 562bhp from a 4.5L engine would have been near impossible, and a few years before that, actually was impossible. Ferrari has opted for multi-link rear suspension in place of the double wishbones it has traditionally favored, and there’s incredibly direct steering (two-turns lock-to-lock), magnetic-fluid suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes and an evolution of the Formula One derived traction and stability controls. The result is a car that grips, turns and stops like you would not believe, rises well for a 100mph-plus supercar, and lets you choose how much electronic assistance you want. Most remarkable of all, perhaps, is the speed at which the 458 builds its rev. There is no lag, no hang you ask of the throttle and the engine delivers, in typical Ferrari fashion. Everything in the 458 feels modern and exudes a sense of handcrafted workmanship that was missing from its predecessor.
