For those of you who don't know
The EPA allowed light trucks over 6100 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight to run no smog gear at all. It allowed Dodge to create what some consider the original muscle pick-up. Dodge customized the Adventurer 150 pick-up, with the "lil Red Express being the result. All units came in Canyon Red. They were the fastest production vehicles made in the US both years. Dodge only produced these trucks in '78 with 2188 units, and in '79 with 5118 units. The primary difference was the addition of quad headlights in '79. The stock engine is a police spec E58 (E for express, thus the name) 360 cubic inch V-8 with high lift camshaft, large four-barrel, windage tray to help the crankshaft rev free of oil, plus a high flow air filter and chrome dress up items. The engine was mated to a 727 Torq-Flite automatic transmission. The exhaust notes are exhaled through the notorious twin chrome 2 1/2 inch vertical stacks poking through the step plates on both sides of the cab. They look like they were swiped from a Kenworth 18 wheeler. Certainly one of the coolest production trucks ever made.
