1969 GTO for Sale

Health Issues Force Sale of Beloved 1969 GTO

I was in the process of a full frame-off restoration when my wife's cancer and my bum back stopped progress on it. The car was purchased in Jacksonville, Florida in 2005 and was running and being driven when restoration started. This is a "half-project" car with chassis,  engine and transmission totally rebuilt and restored. The car has a clear title and is registered in North Carolina although it is not licensed at the moment. Here is the scoop on the Goat:

This is what the GTO looked like when I first bought it as are the first photos below. This is not the current condition. Link at bottom to additional photos show condition car is in now and more detailed photos.

I started a "Frame-Off" restoration in April of 2006 with a local "restoration" shop. This is a very long and sad story but I'll spare you the details and just give you the highlights. What I didn't know but came to find out was that the owner of the shop I engaged was unscrupulous and after removing the body from the frame, he decided he was no longer a restoration shop. Over the course of 7 years, I had three major back fusion surgeries in addition to my wife being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma which put my restoration plans on-hold.

BODY:

The body is in fair shape and is currently stripped of its interior and all moldings which have been bagged and tagged. It originally had a Warwick blue vinyl roof which has been removed. (I am told this is a "rare" two tone color combination!) There is the expected normal rot and some rough areas around the windshield and A-pillars. There is bondo by the wheel wells of the front and rear but is in good enough shape to paint if you don't plan on removing it. The sheet metal overall is straight and original. There is a new aftermarket hood and I have a pair of scoop inserts for it. It also comes with a fiberglass racing hood as a bonus! The floor pans are in very good condition and the trunk is in mostly good condition with a couple of small areas of rot.

The body is now on the chassis but was just put on so it could be moved to my home so only a few body mounts have been installed but I have all new body bushings and mounts to complete the remount on chassis.

The front Endura bumper is in good shape and just needs minor touch-up and paint. The rear bumper has been de-dinged and re-chromed and is in the shipping paper from the plating shop. There is also a new gas tank and straps new in the box.

All glass is good except that the windshield is missing. I have new in-the-box rubber moldings for all windows and doors.

CHASSIS:

The chassis has been has been COMPLETELY RESTORED! The chassis was stripped and painted and all brakes, lines, steering gear, front end bushings and mechanics and more were replaced with new, high quality components (Moog, GM). It looks great and the engine, tranny and drive shaft are all bolted in. It is sitting on chrome rims and dry-rotted tires but I have a partially restored set of 14 x 6 Original Equipment Pontiac Rallye II rims with new trim rings and caps ready to go on your new tires. (red-lines would be very cool!)

The stock springs were kept but there were new GM shocks installed front and rear. Front discs and rear drums have new all new hardware and components including brake hoses, pads, shoes and lines.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION:

Both newly rebuilt! The engine was rebuilt in Jacksonville, FL just prior to my purchase and only had less than 200 miles on it according to the previous owner. I checked with the machine shop that did the work and they confirmed it. It has been bored .030 over and is stock with the exception of a mild Crane Torker Cam. It sounds great and is very streetable. I retouched the engine and transmission paint and they look really good. I have a replacement OE air filter for it which would be OK for a driver. You might want to invest a couple of hundred in a higher quality one with fresh chrome or you could have the lid re-chromed and it would look almost new.

The transmission is a TH-400 and is believed to be original which was completely rebuilt with additional work tuning it by a racing transmission expert here in Wilmington. There is a new-in-the-box 2500 RPM Hughes Racing stall converter that goes with it. It should be able to lay down the 350+ horses just fine! The drive-shaft has been installed with new U-Joints.

COOLING SYSTEM: When I first bought the car it was having some heating problem which I expect is from a leaking radiator. The radiator may need a new core but I am not sure. I think the hoses are still there also.

INTERIOR:

Everything has been stripped out the interior with the exception of the headliner and steering column and wheel. The other components are in storage.

  • DASH - The dash is rough and will require restoring or covering with the addition of a plastic cap. You can find plastic caps for around $200. The door panels are in fair to good shape and can be reused for a "driver" quality restoration with re-glueing of some of the vinyl and new carpet panels on the door kick panels. The kick panels under the dash are good but may need to be re-dyed. The original glove box door was bent so I purchased another straight door which will also need dyeing.
  •
  • GAUGES: The gauges are in good cosmetic shape and include a Tachometer, Speedometer, and Fuel/Idiot Lights in the dash plus I purchased a working dash Clock as I had planned to replace the in-dash tach with a hood mounted tach. (there is not a hood mounted tach with the car) You will need to purchase a new printed circuit board for the gauges to work. (they are made on paper so they deteriorate over time)
  •
  • AC & HEATER: I believe the AC was working when I purchased the car but that is so long ago I really don't remember. The dash outlets will need to be re-chromed. The AC/Heater panel switch is in fair to good shape but you may want to replace it. I think I have or already purchased the vent panels under the dash so I believe all of the parts to for the AC/Heater system are there.
  •
  • CONSOLE: The console is in fair shape and I purchased a replacement console box and padded cover. These will need re-dyeing and a new wood grain insert sticker.
  •
  • SEATS: The front bucket seats are in good condition as far as the vinyl seat-covers are concerned. The rear seat is also in good condition. Both buckets could use some new foam padding which is expected and the rear seats is fine for a "driver".
The front bucket's back panels will need to be dyed or replaced as well as the chrome ribbing and the seat sliders will need a little paint and lubrication but they worked just fine before I removed them.
The seat belts are in good condition and should be fine with a little cleaning. The chrome is "driver" quality.
  •
  • HEADLINER: The headliner will need to be replaced along with the sail panels and package shelf. A new package shelf speaker will be needed as I don't know the condition of the original. Fortunately they are inexpensive.
  •
  • RADIO: You can see on the window sticker at gto.walterfranklindavis.com, that it came with an AM radio which I had restored. The power antenna is complete but will need to be restored.
  •
  • DOOR & WINDOW HANDLES: I have all of the door and window handles and would judge them to be in fair to good condition and would be OK for a "driver" however I would replace the window crank vinyl knobs. The remote side mirror control works but the chrome is somewhat pitted. I have a rear-view mirror but it is not mounted. I believe the mounting hardware is there but am not sure at this writing.

SUMMARY:

Like beauty, quality is in the eye of the beholder. I tend to be pretty picky about things so these descriptions may differ from your opinion however I have tried to be as open and honest as I can. It has been some time since I had all of the parts and pieces out where I can examine them but I think you will find these descriptions are valid but I don't guarantee their accuracy or completeness. I have left many of the parts out just because there are so many of them. If you have specific questions, please email me and I will try to answer them.

In addition to the vehicle, I have a ton of documentation, all receipts for parts, complete body and vehicle manuals, PHS documentation, software and more!

This is a rare opportunity to live the dream yourself without doing all of the work or making the entire investment. I know I will take a big loss on this car but we have many doctor's bills to pay which take precedence over reliving my teenage years. ( I had an almost identical Liberty Blue Goat when I was 19 in 1969!)

This GTO is currently listed in the Wilmington, NC area  so don't hesitate or it will likely be gone pretty quickly. This could be a beautifully restored GTO in just a few months. Think about cruising  next spring. You'll really be too cool for school!

The car is being sold "AS IS - WHERE IS" and any purchase is non-refundable. A non-refundable down payment of $1,000.00 is required with full payment  within 3 days. The buyer must pick up the car and parts in Wilmington within 15 days.
