I t’s no mistake that the Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most loved and recognized cars on the planet. They’ve stood the test of time, and have established themselves as an icon of practicality. Nowadays, owning a classic Bug is cool and a symbol of one’s laid-back and casual lifestyle.

With the influx of new, modern Beetles striving for the retro look made famous by VW, original Bugs are once again chic, trendy, and gaining the recognition they deserve. Moreover, it doesn’t hurt that they are economical and get great gas mileage.




This VW seems to be stuck in a time-warp from the 1970s. It's got slot mag wheels with raised white lettering tires. The steering wheel is wood, and there's also wooden interior accents, which display the nautical theme popular back in the day. This Bug was recently acquired from its previous owner, who purchased the VW in the early '70s and made these period mods back then! He loved this car, but due to failing health, was unable to drive it in recent years, so he had to part with his unique VW.


In the '70s, there were full-size Dodge vans with custom murals and curtains, and then there was this Bug. Overall, it’s quite clean, not necessarily to showcar standards, but as a hobby or fun weekend toy. It’s a very nice driver, both mechanically and cosmetically. It gets more looks than usual, and you'll be grinning all over. Mechanically, this Bug is quite dependable. Beetle still features its six-digit blue CA license plates, an original radio, and the stock six-volt electrical system. Interior is very nice. Engine was recently rebuilt. Here's a fun, little classic that's still a cool mode of transportation, with a unique look from other Bugs.






The unmistakable European styling of the Volkswagen Beetle has aged gracefully. The lines are simple, timeless, and familiar. This VW is from a time when car manufacturers maintained their own identity and innovations, not "copying" each other with the same overused design cues as shown in today’s vehicles.


The best part: awesome mpg! A sigh of relief as the price of gas always seems to be going up. Here’s a cute car that sips gas and is something you can actually take out and enjoy without being terrified to fill up. Upon seeing the Bug’s simple, yet charming interior, you’ll notice everything is clean. The metal painted dash and chrome accents definitely look the part on this vintage '60s design.

Simplicity at its best! No navigation systems, power windows, computers, A/C, or other "modern conveniences." The Bug's electrical components such as lights, signals, odometer, speedometer, wipers, horn, emergency flashers, are all in proper operating condition. Stock radio is currently not working.

The overall condition of the interior is very nice. Seats are comfortable and clean. Carpeting looks relatively new. Seatbelts are heavy-duty and feature the airplane style chrome buckle. Windows roll up & down fine, and the windshield has no cracks. In fact, all the glass is the original Volkswagen issue, and still sport the VW insignia.

The wood wheel is totally groovy. The custom real wood accents and knobs display the nautical theme that was popular back in the early 'seventies, especially in Los Angeles, where this Bug is from.

Door locks are a little temperamental, but operate using the original VW key. Perhaps the tumblers need to be reconditioned. Doors can be locked manually from the inside, and outside from driver door, but only unlocked from the passenger side.

Door panels are stock, but could use some new speakers and grills. Trunk is clean. Pull latch operates easily to release the lid. Carpet is new. There is no spare tire or rim.






The dark red finish was repainted many years ago, probably back in the '80s, so it's old and has some checking. The original color was ivory. Naturally, there are some imperfections here and there, such as scratches/chips/touch-ups/dings on bumpers and paint, which is to be expected on a driver. The body is straight, with no rust, corrosion, or obvious dents. The doors all close solid. Chrome is good, much better than usual for its age, and it still shines brightly.

The Bug was always taken care of and garaged. To my knowledge, this VW has never been in any accidents. This was one enthusiast's pride & joy and the condition of it shows.


Sure, the new Bug is "back," but is it really? Wouldn’t it be more authentic to own a German-produced example where the engine is actually in the rear of the car?
Nothing beats the sheer simplicity, reliability and near zero cost of upkeep as the tried and true VW engine. With proper care and maintenance, this classic "Vee Dub" should last a long time for future enjoyment.



In the back, you’ll find a clean example of the workhorse, air-cooled VW motor. This particular engine has been rebuilt, with receipts and low miles on the rebuild. Motor fires up instantly, it has very good power, and is reliable. It also doesn't smoke. This will be demonstrated in a short YouTube video below. I've driven this Bug all over, even on a 200 mile trip, and it performed flawlessly.

Previous owner was fanatical about his car and kept all the receipts for the maintenance performed on the VW. Click on the images above to see more details on the motor rebuild. Other mechanical details to be mentioned: the electronics are still 6-volt and in excellent working condition. In fact, the battery is a new Interstate. Gearbox is excellent. Brakes are firm. 13" tires have lots of tread left. The four lug wheels are on adapters mounted to the stock 5 lug setup.

When investigating the underside of any classic VW, escpecially one that's nearly 50 years old, you never know what to expect. Most of the time there’s rust, corrosion, or other blemishes. Because this car has been garaged, and in a dry California climate, the original pans are in stellar condition, except for a small spot of corrosion on the corner of the vulnerable battery area.
